Monday, Dec. 6 rolled around and things were pretty quiet. When we got home from work, we noticed a few drawings on the walls and a couple of small holes and a box of lighting fixtures. Tuesday and Wednesday brought more holes, wiring and a new electrical panel on the back of the house. Previously the panel was inside a cupboard, rendering that space useless.
Electrical seemed to move a little slow, but what do I know? I’m a journalist.
The electrician did take one day off for an emergency elsewhere, which slowed him down a bit.
We disconnected the washer and dryer in the laundry room and finished ripping up the flooring Dec. 1. We were ready for the crews to start redoing the plumbing in the entire house. It was exciting. Progress was being made.
On Sunday, Dec. 12, we picked out the flooring and scheduled installation. We went with Mohawk African Stone tile in the Nigeria shade.
So Sunday night we curled up in bed content that things were moving ahead.
3:30 a.m. Monday: Eric and I are awakened by this loud screaming, wailing cry. We rush in to see what’s up with Gabe, and we find a bed full of macaroni and cheese. It wasn’t a pretty site.
This is the first time he’s ever really been sick, and he wasn’t sure what the whole “throwing up” thing was. We changed Gabe, changed the sheets and went to throw the clothes in the laundry, only the washer and dryer were disconnected.
I took care of Gabe while Eric hauled the washer and dryer back into place. We were rudely awakened several more times that. Luckily Gabe caught on rather quickly and gave us plenty of warning with an “Oh no, Mommy, not more.” In fact, he was quite proud of himself by morning and was standing over the toilet saying, “I did it. I did it.”
Eric was remained home with Gabe on Monday and took him to the doctor. Eric quickly found out that it’s not too much fun to have a sick kid in the house without running water, and Gabe learned to say, “Macaroni and cheese came out my nose,” and repeated it to every member of the construction crew.
The doctor’s verdict was no day care until Thursday or Friday.
So that put me at home Tuesday through Thursday while the plumbers and the electrician were hard at work.
