The Ventura College men's basketball team (12-1) suffered its first loss of the season. The CCCMBCA release termed Wednesday's first-round loss to Antelope Valley a "bad loss" in its weekly press release, so the previously-ranked No. 1 dipped to No. 3 in Southern California and No. 6 in the state. The Pirates still have the best record and best RPI rating in the region.

VC, MC mbb starting strong

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

The men's basketball teams started strong over the weekend at the We Play Hard tournament in Ventura.

No. 4-ranked Ventura College is 3-0 for the first time since 2003-04 after winning the tournament for the first time by topping Orange Coast, No. 3 Saddleback and No. 10 Antelope Valley.

And the Pirates did so without a key player. Forward Najee Salaam missed the weekend with a foot injury. Several newcomers picked up the slack, including 6-foot-3 guard Ivan Dooley, who averaged 19.3 points; 6-4 wing Jaylin Airington, who averaged 16.3 points and 7.3 rebounds; and 6-6 forward Anthony Mormon, who averaged 15.0 points and 7.7 rebounds.

Moorpark (2-1) showed promise by beating Los Angeles Valley and Pasadena City to win the consolation title.

Sophomore forward Sahdi Odu may be the Raiders' lone returner, but the Raiders have some outside shooting with guards Spencer Levy and D.J. Saul, a scorer in former Oxnard High star Matt Ramon and size with 6-8 Jordan Garrett and 6-6 Zach Davis.

Ventura opens the Irvine Valley tournament today at 4 p.m. against 2-0 Canyons. Moorpark hosts East Los Angeles (1-1) Saturday at 5 p.m.

Tipping off at No. 2

The Moorpark College women's basketball team also looked strong Tuesday, when it opened its season with a 71-51 win over visiting Santa Monica. Twin towers Katie Lenik and Riley Abraham combined for 27 points and 17 rebounds.

Moorpark travels north for the Sierra College Summitt tournament Friday, when will face West Hills in the quarterfinals.

The only local team that has yet to tipoff its season is the Ventura College women's basketball team, which was ranked No. 2 in both the Southern California and state preseason polls behind defending state champion Mount San Antonio.

The Pirates get started Friday at 3 p.m. in the Vaquero Shootout at Glendale College. The opening matchup against Fullerton is a rematch of the 2010 state championship game.

The season has yet to start, but the Pirates already have a special honor this fall.

VC sophomores Hanna Burge and Eda Graham were both named to the 2011-12 Academic All-State first team last month. The Newbury Park and Ventura High graduates are two of the three members of the five-player team who earned perfect 4.0 GPAs last season.

Burge and Graham were honored from a pool that included 37 nominees who achieved at least a 3.2 GPA.

Midnight matchup

Both high school scrimmages combined for four dramatic overtimes and Pacifica High's Eric Davis produced a memorable performance in the slam dunk contest, but they weren't the primary attraction at Ventura College's Midnight Madness basketball event late Saturday

The matchup of Ventura College sophomores Zalmico Harmon and Joseph Soto, who will comprise one of the top backcourts in the state this winter, was the show.

"Just another day at practice," Soto said. "We both know each other's strengths and weaknesses, so it's always a battle."

Harmon's Black team beat Soto's Orange team in the scrimmage. But the third member of Ventura's Big 3, Najee Salaam, was a big advantage for the Black. Both guards looked significant improved over the offseason. Soto's 16 points, including four 3-pointers, led the night.

"He wasn't missing," Harmon said.

Basketball season may be a month away, but the teams will begin official practices this month.

Local basketball fans can get a first look at Ventura College men's basketball team Saturday night, when the Pirates will host their annual Midnight Madness event.

Ventura High will scrimmage Pacifica High at 10 p.m. Camarillo High will scrimmage Santa Paula at 10:45 p.m. A slam dunk and 3-point contest will follow before VC plays a midnight instrasquad scrimmage.

Ventura returns stars Zalmico Harmon, Joseph Soto and Najee Salaam off the team that went 19-12 and reached the regional semifinals a year ago.

LaFountain signs with Texas-El Paso

Ventura College forward Destinee LaFountain has signed a letter of intent to play for Texas-El Paso.

The Royal High product was the first player in 19 years to average a double-double for the Pirates, averaging 12.9 points and 11.2 rebounds in her 64-game career. She finished as Ventura's second all-time leading rebounder.

"She's a power forward who plays very hard," UTEP coach Keitha Adams said. "She really hits the boards hard, and she comes to us from a winning tradition."

After leading the Pirates to a 32-2 season as a sophomore, the 6-foot-1 post player was named Western State Conference North Division Player of the Year, California state co-Player of the Year and was the only Californian on the WBCA All-American team.

Hall signs with Bakersfield

Sophomore forward Corey Hall, who had back-to-back 20-rebound performances in the postseason for the Ventura College men's basketball team, has signed with NCAA Division I Cal State Bakersfield.

The 6-foot-6 Chicago native averaged 12.2 points and 13.2 rebounds per game as a sophomore.

"The addition of Corey will allow the Roadrunners to continue their ascent at the Division I level," said Ventura coach Joey Ramirez in a release, "especially with his contributions on both ends of the floor and his tireless work on the glass."

Just two months after Oxnard College decided to suspend its basketball programs, a Condor led his team to the state championship.

Ed Madec, the Rio Mesa High and Oxnard College product, coached the Fresno City men's basketball team to the state title for the second time in five years.

The Rams beat Yuba 77-62 in the state final Sunday at Consumnes River in Sacramento.
Mount San Antonio beat Foothill, 68-58, in the women's final. Ventura College sophomore Rebecca Griffin, who scored a game-high 14 points in the Pirates' semifinal loss, was named to the all-tournament team.
