Despite a frantic comeback that nearly saw them erased a 19-point deficit in a matter of minutes, the Ventura College men's basketball team fell hard in this week's polls. The Ventura College women stay strong at No. 2. Despite dropping three of its last four, the Moorpark College women rose one spot.

The Ventura College men's basketball team (12-1) suffered its first loss of the season. The CCCMBCA release termed Wednesday's first-round loss to Antelope Valley a "bad loss" in its weekly press release, so the previously-ranked No. 1 dipped to No. 3 in Southern California and No. 6 in the state. The Pirates still have the best record and best RPI rating in the region.

A glimpse into the future

It was just a practice exercise, but men's and women's coaches both produced a preliminary projection of next week's Southern California regional playoff seedings over the weekend.

The men's coaches association was asked to use the seeding criteria to rank the final regional poll of the season. The Ventura College men's basketball team (17-11) was ranked No. 13 with a quarterfinal visit to No. 4 San Bernardino Valley on tap. WSC North foes Cuesta (22-7) and Hancock (20-9) were No. 8 and No. 14, respectively. San Francisco (25-2) and Citrus (24-1), who contested last year's state final, were the top seeds in the North and South, respectively.

Click the jump for this week's men's polls.

When one local coach calculated the women's seeding, No. 1-ranked Ventura, which has been recently edged out for the top seed by Mount San Antonio (2009) and Fullerton (2010) despite overall record and head-to-head advantages, barely nipped No. 2 Mount SAC for the top seed on a tiebreaker, despite giving the No. 2 Mounties and No. 3 San Bernardino Valley four of their six combined losses this season.

Moorpark was No. 13, only two slots from hosting a first-round game Wednesday rather than earning a bye to the weekend's quarterfinals.

With plenty of jockeying for position to go with a week's worth of games to add to the database, it looks like Saturday's WSC North title-decider between Moorpark and host Ventura will have even more riding on it.

Despite a two-win week that consolidated its second-place position in the WSC North, the Ventura College men's basketball team (15-11, 7-2) slipped one slot to No. 13 in the Southern California coaches' poll.

Four games over .500 for the first time this season, chasing Ventura is one game in the loss column behind first-place Cuesta (20-7, 9-1), who debuted at No. 16 in the state poll and rose to No. 8 in the regional poll.

Saturday's shocking 85-84 loss at Cuesta, in which it allowed 11 of the final 12 points of the game, didn't just cost the Ventura College men's basketball team first place in the WSC North.

The Pirates (13-11, 5-2) slipped out of the state poll Monday. They also slid two spots to No. 12 in the Southern California regional poll.

The WSC North populates the bottom half of the regional poll. Cuesta is No. 11, Ventura is No. 12 and Hancock is No. 14.
