Apparently, the Moorpark College football team doesn't mind facing foes from Orange County.

Playing without star running back Danny Mosier, the Raiders have jumped out to a 14-0 lead over No. 8 ranked Santa Ana College through one quarter tonight at Griffin Stadium.

Donald Senegal hit Justin Bradley with a 29-yard TD pass and, following Roy Holmes' interception, running back Matt Gentle ran in a 2-yard touchdown run.

Donald Senegal's 15-yard touchdown pass to RB Nathan Largen has pulled Moorpark within three points of Fullerton, 16-13, with 10:26 to play at Griffin Stadium.

The 10-play, 76-yard drive was the second straight that Fullerton extended with a roughing the passer penalty.

Moorpark pulls within 16-6 with 1:34 left in the third quarter on Luke Geiler's recovery of Don Senegal's fumble in the end zone.

Senegal appeared to get the pylon on the conversion try but it was deemed unsuccessful.

Geiler is a sophomore offensive lineman from Alemany.

Moorpark has outgained the Hornets 160-90 after 30 minutes, but has had four drives stall in Fullerton territory.

Fullerton's All-American safety Lee Aguirre left the game with an injury after intercepting a Donald Senegal pass on the goal line on a fourth and 1 play deep in Hornets' territory.

Fullerton has pulled QB Jeff Fleming has been has been pulled after failing to complete his first five passes. Christian Andrade's interception on the Hornets' fourth drive was the final straw. Freshman Matthew Heady has replaced Fleming, who had a passing efficiency rating of more than 180 through two games.

Moorpark College quarterback Donald Senegal will start his second collegiate game, and first home game, tonight against Fullerton.

I asked offensive coordinator Jimmy Bittner if Senegal was the team's official starter:

"As long as he keeps making plays, he's the guy," responded Bittner.

Fullerton College football coach Tim Byrnes on Moorpark College starting quarterback Donald Senegal, who completed 19 of 33 passes for 33 yards and 3 TDs in the Raiders' 51-48 win Saturday over West Los Angeles.

"Anytime a guy can move around, you always worry as coaches," said Tim Byrnes. "What worries us is his ability to scramble around in the pocket.

"He doesn't really run, but he's able to scramble and make some things happen."

Trailing for more than three quarters, the Moorpark College football team had to dig deep for its dramatic 51-48 win over West Los Angeles College Saturday afternoon in Culver City.

Which pleased head coach Jim Bittner.

"We know they're not going to quit," said Bittner. "That's a good sign. We can build on that."

Quarterback Donald Senegal, making his first college start, was perhaps more impressed with his teammates.

"We're always faced with adversity," said Senegal, "and we always get through it. This is the best team I've ever played on in my life. These guys, they're as tough as nails. ...
"This is going to carry us through the whole season. We're going to do some big things."

Donald Senegal capped off his first collegiate start with an 8-yard game-winning touchdown pass to freshman Mark Urbina with 26 seconds to play as the Moorpark College football team beat feisty West Los Angeles, 51-48, Saturday afternoon in Culver City.

Senegal threw for 368 yards and two TDs. RB Danny Mosier ran for more than 200 yards and scored four TDs.

Yet Moorpark trailed 48-45 with a first and goal from the West LA 8-yard line with 34 seconds to play.

Moorpark, ranked No. 5 in Southern California, improves to 2-0.

Star teammate David Lassen is covering No. 5 Moorpark College's visit to West Los Angeles this afternoon:

The Raiders trail 27-17 at the half, despite another touchdown run by sophomore Dan Mosier and a 1-yard run by quarterback Donald Senegal, who was elevated to the starting lineup today.

West L.A. quarterback Ryan Rosenthal has completed 19 of 22 passes for more than 250 yards at the half, which included one of the wildest scoring plays the veteran Lassen has ever seen.

Rosenthal caught his own deflected shovel pass and ran 34-yards for a touchdown. Now how do you score that, asked Lassen? Is is a run or a pass?

Senegal to start at QB for Moorpark

Sophomore Donald Senegal, whose two touchdown passes helped the Moorpark College football team open its season with a 28-17 win over Los Angeles Pierce last weekend, will start at quarterback Saturday at West Los Angeles College, according to coach Jim Bittner.

Redshirt freshman Tyler Roberson started the season opener and completed 4 of 10 passes. Senegal completed 6 of 8 passes.

"It's two things," said Bittner. "Tyler struggled last week and Donald performed much better. Donald has a little more mobility with this type of pressure defense.

"Tyler is still in our plans. But for this particular game, they could make it real hard on Tyler."

West L.A. runs a 1985 Chicago Bears-style 46 defense which puts as many as nine players in the tackle box. Senegal, who still fancies himself as a wide receiver, may be able to buy a little more time with his mobility.

QB controversy brewing in Moorpark?

Redshirt freshman Tyler Roberson started the Raiders' 28-17 win over Los Angeles Pierce Saturday night in Woodland Hills, but it was reserve Donald Senegal who finished it.

Senegal threw two touchdown passes less than a minute apart straddling the third and fourth quarters to provide the game-winning margin.

Moorpark coach Jim Bittner hinted Sunday that Senegal might start Saturday against West Los Angeles:

"Offensively, we struggled. Donald Senegal came in in the second half and played pretty well... Donald might have won himself a spot, although I'm not going to give up on (Roberson).

"They're different quarterbacks. (Roberson) is a stand-up thrower while Donald is a shifty guy."

Raiders need time they don't have

The Moorpark College football team looked like the inexperienced team it is during Saturday night's 28-17 win at Los Angeles Pierce.

The Raiders used two touchdown runs by Danny Mosier and two touchdown passes by reserve quarterback Donald Senegal, one to tight end Aulama Lemalu and one to freshman Simeon McCrae, to get past the Brahmas.

Lemalu is a 6-foot, 250-pound tight end from Camarillo High. McCrae is the younger brother of sophomore running back Kyley McCrae. They are from Salem, Ore.

With more than 60 freshmen, the Raiders were counting on wins against two lower tier teams to open the season. But Saturday's opponent, West L.A., upset Northern Division rival Glendale, 20-13, last weekend.

"I was counting on West LA not being so tough and then they knock off Glendale," said Moorpark coach Jim Bittner. "I wanted a chance to improve a little bit until we get into the middle of the schedule... We're going to have to get better fast."

Bittner didn't like what he saw Sunday, when he watched West L.A. tape:

"It wasn't any fluke. That's the best West L.A. team I've seen in a long time."

MC football scrimmage review

Upon second viewing, Moorpark College head football coach Jim Bittner felt much better about his team's efforts in its scrimmage Friday at El Camino College in Torrance.

"I just finished looking at it again," said Bittner. "I was pretty depressed after it finished Friday, but I feel much better having watched the film."

According to Bittner, El Camino won the game portion of the scrimmage, 18-12, before tacking on another score during an additional period. Moorpark struggled to run the ball against a mammoth defensive front, but quarterbacks Tyler Robertson and Donald Senegal each threw scoring strikes.

"It was very difficult to run against them," said Bittner. "But we threw pretty well."

"Senegal is a guy we've been messing with. He wants to be a receiver, but we really need him as a backup quarterback and he did a nice job."

Robertson, who yielded the starting job to Bryan Randolph last August after suffering a season-ending knee injury in a scrimmage, found receiver Justin Bradley for a long touchdown pass.

Bradley is the son of Moorpark all-time great Freddie Bradley, whose 1,946-yard, 27-touchdown, 10-game season in 1990 is considered the Western State Conference's

"He's faster than Conrad (Meadows)," said Bittner. "He dropped one deep that should have been a touchdown and beat the guy deep again for a touchdown."

It took 100 plays in Saturday's Moorpark College football intrasquad scrimmage, but the Raiders' offense finally got into the end zone.

Sophomore quarterback Donald Senegal scored on a keeper on the final series of the day Saturday to give the Raiders' offense a bright spot going into Friday scrimmage at El Camino College in Torrance.

"We were supposed to go 80 plays," said head coach Jim Bittner. "I was wondering why (offensive coordinator) Jimmy (Bittner) wouldn't stop.

"He kept saying, 'Let's go 10 more. Let's go 10 more."
