The Ventura College women's soccer team is always aiming for that historic run to the state Final Four.

To get one step closer, these Pirates will need to break new ground for the program.

Despite all its success, coach Steve Hoffman's team has yet to win twice in a postseason. In the playoffs for the 14th straight season, the Pirates are 0-8 in their second game of the Southern California regional playoffs.

To make things more interesting, No. 2 Ventura (17-3-1) hosts the only team to win at the VC Sportsplex this season. No. 7 Santa Monica (13-3-6) beat the Pirates 2-1 Sept. 20. Tonight's kickoff is at 5:30 p.m.

Ventura is one of four local teams to play regional semifinals today. The No. 4 Moorpark College women's soccer team (15-0-4) hosts three-time state champion Cypress (17-3-2), the No. 5 seed, at 2 p.m.

Having survived the all-county matching with Oxnard, No. 10 Moorpark College men's soccer (12-6-2) visits No. 2 Mount San Antonio (16-1-3), the 2007 state champion and 2008 state finalist, in Walnut at 2 p.m.

No. 4 Moorpark College women's volleyball (19-2) hosts No. 13 Mount San Antonio College (13-8).

With the women's soccer and women's volleyball teams hosting postseason games and men's soccer on the road, Tuesday should be a memorable day at Moorpark College.

Today's winners advance to Saturday's regional finals. The soccer Final Four is Dec. 4 and 6 at Cosumnes River College in Sacramento. The volleyball Great Eight is Dec. 4-6 at San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton.

Moorpark College men's soccer head coach Sean Roche on the Raiders 1-0 Southern California regional quarterfinal win over county-rival Oxnard Saturday afternoon:

"The game lived up to the expectation of what it would be. It was an even game, just the one goal, but everywhere else, it was even."

The Moorpark College soccer teams owned Saturday afternoon's Southern California quarterfinals.

The visiting Moorpark men edged cross-county rival Oxnard, 1-0, on a 20th minute Oxnard own goal, when an attacking move by Moorpark strikers Gerardo Espinoza and Kevin Sanchez was deflected into the Condors net by an Oxnard defender.

The host Moorpark women got past No. 13 San Diego Miramar, 1-0. Natalee Flugum headed home Sinead Vaughan's near-post corner kick in the final minute of the first half.

Both teams advance to Tuesday's Southern California semifinals. The No. 10 Moorpark men will visit Mount San Antonio College, the 2007 state champion and 2008 state finalist. The No. 4 Moorpark women will host Orange County opposition, either No. 5 Cypress, a state powerhouse, or No. 12 Orange Coast.

"Like all Oxnard teams, we usually have the ball," said Oxnard coach Ross Greaney. "We have a lot of possession and we play pretty well on the ball."

The host Moorpark College men's soccer team defeated first-place Santa Barbara City, 1-0, this afternoon to pull the Western State Conference race tighter.

The loss was the first by the Vaqueros (8-5-4, 8-1-3) in WSC play. Moorpark (9-6-2, 7-4-1) pulled within five points of Santa Barbara in the standings, 27 to 22.

The Oxnard College men's soccer team (10-5-4, 6-3-3) is a point back with 21 after defeating visiting Glendale, 1-0, Friday on Sam Nellis' goal set up by Johnny Martinez.

Arrevalo's late goal gives Oxnard 1-1 draw

Freshman midfielder Jose Arrevalo scored with two minutes to play as the Oxnard College men's soccer team forced a 1-1 tie at county-rival Moorpark Tuesday afternoon.

Midfielder Joel Chaves won the ball in the 88th minute and found Arrevalo, who beat a pair of Raiders as he cut inside and finished his first goal of the season. Moorpark had taken the lead in the 80th minute on a full-field move.

"It was great that they battled at 1 o'clock in the heat," said Oxnard coach Ross Greaney of his team, which has been inundated with flu-like symptoms this week. "I was subsituting like a hockey coach."

With a win, Oxnard (9-5-4, 5-3-3) or Moorpark (8-6-2, 6-4-1) could have moved within striking distance of first-place Santa Barbara City in the Western State Conference. Instead, the Ventura County derby finished in a draw for the eighth time in 12 meetings.

Ventura County derby looms Friday

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

There is no room for error when the Moorpark College and Oxnard College men's soccer teams meet.

The Ventura County derby, which resumes Friday afternoon at Oxnard College, has ended in a draw seven times in 10 meetings since 2004, including the last four meetings.

"It's a valuable game for both of us," said Moorpark coach Sean Roche. "We know it will be tough. We have to be on our game to get a win."

Moorpark (5-2-1) has opened up 3-0 in Western State Conference play following Tuesday's 3-2 win over visiting Hancock.

Featuring Gerardo Espinosa up front, Augie Cazarez on the left and Adrian Llamas in midfield, the Raiders have outscored conference opponents, 8-3.

"We have the most gifted attacking group that we've had in a number of years," said Roche. "That is what this team is about."

Oxnard (5-4-1, 1-2) has hit the skids since opening WSC play Sept. 29 with a late 1-0 win over Citrus that gave the Condors a five-game winning streak in which they outscored opponents 19-4.

Back-to-back losses to the two second-place teams, Santa Barbara City and Los Angeles Mission, has Oxnard needing a win to stay within touching distance of the leaders.

"Moorpark's always important, but now it's doubly so," said Oxnard coach Ross Greaney. "They're off to a good start."

Behind midfielders Max Madrigal, Abel Pacheco, Sam Nellis, Alberto Angiano and forwards Nate Lydle and Emilio Ramirez, the Condors have been a force in possession.

But after scoring in the first nine games of the season, the goals have dried up as Oxnard has been shut out in each of its past two games.

"We've had a lot of possession and a lot of great play, but just not the final pass or the final shot," said Greaney. "I'm happy with the way we're playing for most of the areas of the field, just not in front of the goal.

"If we start scoring, everything is going to fall into place."

Both teams are struggling with injuries at the back. Oxnard defensive midfielder Jonny Martinez has moved to center back because of injuries to Richie Vargas and Andres Herrera.

Neither team has been able to get three points from the derby since Moorpark's 2-0 win on Oct. 24, 2006 on goals by Luis Carmona and Rei Stern. Oxnard's last beat Moorpark, 1-0, on Oct. 25, 2005.

Juan Santiago and Adrian Llamas scored five minutes apart at the end of the
first half as the Moorpark College men¹s soccer team improved to 3-0 in the
Western State Conference with a 3-2 win over visiting Hancock on Tuesday
afternoon.

Santiago opened the scoring in the 39th minute. After Hancock immediately
equalized, Llamas dribbled 40 yards and finished the restore the Raiders
lead.

Kevin Sanchez added a third six minutes after the half for Moorpark (5-2-1,
3-0), who travels to Oxnard on Friday for the Ventura County derby.

Oxnard (5-4-1, 1-2 WSC) fell to visiting Los Angeles Mission (5-4-1, 2-0-1), who sits alongside Santa Barbara City in second place with seven points.

The Oxnard College women's soccer team fell 3-1 at Cuesta. Liz Gouvea scored in the 88th minute for the Condors (2-6-2, 1-2).

The Moorpark College men's soccer team is the lone 2-0 team after two rounds of Western State Conference following Friday's 1-0 win at Glendale.

"After two games," said Moorpark coach Sean Roche.

Left midfielder Augie Cazarez set up Gerardo Espinoza's goal in the 57th minute.

"We had 17 shots, they had three," said Roche. "I know that soccer isn't a game of statistics, but that is legitimate. We had the larger percentage of the game.

"We had a lot of opportunities, good opportunities."

Meanwhile, Oxnard (5-3-1, 1-1) fell 2-0 under the lights at Santa Barbara City.

Among the goalscorers for the Vaqueros? Former Pacifica High and Oxnard College winger Danny Rodriguez.
