The Ventura College men's basketball team (12-1) suffered its first loss of the season. The CCCMBCA release termed Wednesday's first-round loss to Antelope Valley a "bad loss" in its weekly press release, so the previously-ranked No. 1 dipped to No. 3 in Southern California and No. 6 in the state. The Pirates still have the best record and best RPI rating in the region.

VC, MC mbb starting strong

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

The men's basketball teams started strong over the weekend at the We Play Hard tournament in Ventura.

No. 4-ranked Ventura College is 3-0 for the first time since 2003-04 after winning the tournament for the first time by topping Orange Coast, No. 3 Saddleback and No. 10 Antelope Valley.

And the Pirates did so without a key player. Forward Najee Salaam missed the weekend with a foot injury. Several newcomers picked up the slack, including 6-foot-3 guard Ivan Dooley, who averaged 19.3 points; 6-4 wing Jaylin Airington, who averaged 16.3 points and 7.3 rebounds; and 6-6 forward Anthony Mormon, who averaged 15.0 points and 7.7 rebounds.

Moorpark (2-1) showed promise by beating Los Angeles Valley and Pasadena City to win the consolation title.

Sophomore forward Sahdi Odu may be the Raiders' lone returner, but the Raiders have some outside shooting with guards Spencer Levy and D.J. Saul, a scorer in former Oxnard High star Matt Ramon and size with 6-8 Jordan Garrett and 6-6 Zach Davis.

Ventura opens the Irvine Valley tournament today at 4 p.m. against 2-0 Canyons. Moorpark hosts East Los Angeles (1-1) Saturday at 5 p.m.

From the moment the final buzzer sounded, it was obvious that Saturday's 85-84 loss at Cuesta would put the Ventura College men's basketball team in a difficult position in the WSC North race

But how's this for awkward?

It's looking like the Pirates are going to have to root for rival Moorpark to upend the first-place Cougars for the second time this season Saturday in San Luis Obispo.

"I would hate to be dependant on us, if I was them," said Moorpark coach Remy McCarthy, jokingly. "But we'll give it the old college try."

Fourth-place Moorpark (7-15, 3-4) has lost three straight tough ones, but the Raiders, featuring the backcourt of Coltrane Powdrill and Jamal McClerkin, remain the only team to beat Cuesta (19-7, 7-1) in WSC North play.

Powdrill had 23 points and nine rebounds and Sahdi Odu had 16 points in Moorpark's 75-66 win over Cuesta Jan. 11 at Raider Pavilion.

Cuesta has taken command of the WSC North race in the past five days by coming from 10 points down with 3:55 to play against VC Saturday, then turning a 29-25 halftime deficit into a 60-53 win at third-place Hancock Wednesday.

"They beat us in the second half on our own home floor, and that hasn't happened in more than a year," Hancock coach Ralph Gorton told the Santa Maria Times.

If Cuesta can get past Moorpark Saturday, the three remaining teams on its schedule are the bottom three teams in the standings, Oxnard, Los Angeles Pierce and Santa Barbara City, who are a combined 1-12 against the other four teams in the WSC North.
