Despite a frantic comeback that nearly saw them erased a 19-point deficit in a matter of minutes, the Ventura College men's basketball team fell hard in this week's polls. The Ventura College women stay strong at No. 2. Despite dropping three of its last four, the Moorpark College women rose one spot.

The Moorpark College women's basketball team also looked strong Tuesday, when it opened its season with a 71-51 win over visiting Santa Monica. Twin towers Katie Lenik and Riley Abraham combined for 27 points and 17 rebounds.

Moorpark travels north for the Sierra College Summitt tournament Friday, when will face West Hills in the quarterfinals.

The only local team that has yet to tipoff its season is the Ventura College women's basketball team, which was ranked No. 2 in both the Southern California and state preseason polls behind defending state champion Mount San Antonio.

The Pirates get started Friday at 3 p.m. in the Vaquero Shootout at Glendale College. The opening matchup against Fullerton is a rematch of the 2010 state championship game.

The season has yet to start, but the Pirates already have a special honor this fall.

VC sophomores Hanna Burge and Eda Graham were both named to the 2011-12 Academic All-State first team last month. The Newbury Park and Ventura High graduates are two of the three members of the five-player team who earned perfect 4.0 GPAs last season.

Burge and Graham were honored from a pool that included 37 nominees who achieved at least a 3.2 GPA.

It all comes down to tonight at the VC Athletic Event Center. Ventura has clinched a share of its 22nd straight WSC North title. Moorpark can earn a share by becoming the first team in those 22 years to hand Ventura a WSC North defeat on its home floor. Both teams are postseason bound, but Ventura probably needs a win to earn the No. 1 seed in the Southern California regional playoffs. If Moorpark loses, it has a chance of slipping from the high teens to the low teens, which would mean playing a first-round game Wednesday rather than earning a bye to next weekend's regional quarterfinals. Moorpark hasn't beaten Ventura since 1991, but the Raiders were 71 seconds from breaking Ventura's 46-game, 21-year hold on the rivalry Jan. 25 at Raider Pavilion.

Ventura 17-11 .607 9-2 .818

Oxnard 10-15 .400 3-8 .273
Santa Barbara 4-22 .154 1-10 .091

Cuesta clinched a share of the title with a win Wednesday over Santa Barbara City, but the Cougars must beat Oxnard tonight in the final game at Condor Center to clinch the outright championship. Ventura can stay in contention by beating cross-county rival Moorpark. Although the Raiders did play the Pirates to the final seconds until Zalmico Harmon's buzzer-beating game-winner Jan. 25.

Chun displaying many talents for Moorpark

Whether she is in the startling lineup or coming off the bench, running the point or playing on the wing, versatile freshman Camilla Chun is one of the big reasons why the Moorpark College women's basketball team is still competing with No. 1-ranked Ventura College in the Western State Conference race.

And, recently, Chun, a dominant defender who leads the WSC in steals, has added even more to the entertainment value at Raider Pavilion.

First, the Thousand Oaks High product began showcasing her singing ability alongside teammate Maya Machler during pregame renditions of the national anthem.

"She just has so many talents," said sophomore Charnae Thomas. "You never know with Camilla."

Then, Wednesday, she wrote and performed a rap to celebrate her three out-going teammates on Sophomore Night.

"That was pretty creative," said sophomore Ashley Samson.

Chun, along with her fellow freshman, performed the rhyme as poetry after the typical flowers and photographs of the season's last home game were completed.

"I love to sing," said Chun. "That's what I want to do."
