Condors contenders?

Is the Oxnard College women's soccer team the biggest threat to the defending champion Ventura women in the WSC North race?

Megan Williams scored as Oxnard (4-3-4) opened WSC North with a 1-1 tie at Santa Barbara City, ranked No. 14 in this week's national coaches poll, Tuesday night.

Asked if the result showed the rest of the division that the Condors will be in the title race, Oxnard coach Bill Propster responded, "It was a statement to ourselves."

Oxnard's improvement can be, in part, attributed to improvement at the back. It has conceded just 12 goals in 11 matches.

The Condors had been outscored 47-6 in its 12-game losing streak to Santa Barbara, which dated back to a scoreless draw in Nov. 2005.

The second team included Ventura sophomore goalkeeper Raelene Moreno, freshman attacker Breanna Naranjo, freshman midfielder Shayna Petterson, sophomore midfielder Hannah Richie; Moorpark sophomore defender Mariiana Linares; Oxnard sophomore midfielder Alma Izquierdo and freshman striker Brittany Dubin.

Sophomore defender Kylee Haughton and freshman defender Rachel Jonas of Ventura; freshman midfielder Ryann Appell and freshman midfielder Taylor Hennings of Moorpark; and freshman goalkeeper Maria Lazano and freshman forward Megan Williams of Oxnard were among the honorable mention.

Brittany Dubin scored two first-half goals and Anilu Saldana added a late equalizer as the Oxnard College women's soccer team threatened visiting Santa Barbara City, the No. 5-ranked team in the county, in Tuesday's WSC North opener.

Despite the Vaqueros prevailing 4-3, second-year Oxnard coach Bill Propster was not disheartened.

"We would have liked to have gotten something out of the game, but we did some good things," said Propster. "We're trying to become a team that competes with the Santa Barbaras of the world, and we did."

Ashley Rodriguez and Ces Montaro created goals as Oxnard (2-4-3) jumped out to an early lead and responded to Santa Barbara's three-goal spurt just after halftime.

"We were able to create mistakes by them and take advantage of it," said Propster. "It's something we've been working on.

Every goal scored during the month of October will have even more meaning for the Ventura College women's soccer team.

The Pirates are collecting pledges for every goal they score during their "Score for the Cure" breast cancer drive. Local high schools, including Buena, Ventura, Pacifica, Camarillo, Rio Mesa and St. Bonaventure High, are also participating in the program.

Limping at the finish

The Oxnard College women's soccer team limped to the final whistle. Literally.

The Condors (3-15-1) did not have enough healthy players to contest
their season finale Tuesday against WSC North champion Moorpark
because of a flurry of concussions, sprained ankles and knee ligament
tears.

"I know that's not the best way to (end a season)," said Oxnard
athletic director Jonas Crawford. "They're the walking wounded. We
have maybe 10 healthy players."

It should be noted that Oxnard did not forfeit a WSC North contest.
The two teams had already played their two conference matches. A
third, non-conference match was added when West Los Angeles dropped
its women's program in September.

Ella Ambriz recorded an assist in each half as the Oxnard College women's soccer team drew 2-2 with Chaffey College in 100 degree temperatures at Rancho Cucamonga Monday afternoon.

Melissa Chavez and June Guillen scored for the Condors.

"The play started with a Maricruz Magana corner kick which went past the far post to Ambriz who volleyed the ball back across the goal mouth for a wide open Chavez to head into the goal," wrote Oxnard assistant coach Bill Propster of the first goal.

Propster also described the second goal:

"Ambriz got her second assist of the game when she won the ball in midfield, played a perfectly weighted through ball to send Guillen 1 on 1 with the Chaffey goalkeeper.

"Guillen calmly slid the ball past the keeper to the near post."
