Moorpark College sophomore Karissa Flack and Moorpark College coach Steve Burkhart earned the top honors when the All-WSC North women's volleyball team was announced earlier this month.

Flack, a 6-foot middle blocker from Newbury Park High, was voted the Player of the Year after leading the WSC in kills (364), hitting (.463) and solo blocks (61).

Burkhart, who guided the 12-0 Raiders to their ninth WSC North championships, was named WSC Coach of the Year for the fifth time. Moorpark became the first WSC team in more than 30 years to sweep its division without dropping a game.

The All-WSC North first team also included Moorpark sophomore setter Jessica Soprano, sophomore libero Michelle Tanaka and freshman middle blocker Gabriella Luciani, as well as Ventura freshman outside hitter Dejiana Rubio.

The second team included Moorpark sophomore setter Taylor Frederick and sophomore outside hitter Brooke Mataele; Ventura sophomore middle blocker Alexandra Joyce and sophomore libero Leandra Romero; and Oxnard sophomore middle blocker Brooke Reed.

Honorable mention included Moorpark sophomore outside hitter Alyssa Del Sesto and sophomore libero Jasmine Sagisi; Ventura freshman middle blocker Jeanette Gonzales and sophomore setter Kryssy Koziel; and Oxnard freshman outside hitter Mirella Esparza and sophomore middle blocker Mary Grace Edrada.

OC volleyball hires Hanson

Oxnard College has hired former UC Santa Barbara All-American and AVP professional Brooke (Niles) Hanson as assistant coach of its women's volleyball team.

The Calabasas High graduate and Ventura resident, who also served UCSB as an assistant coach from 2003 to 2007, played every position but middle blocker during her four-year career on Isla Vista. Her bio on the UCSB website calls her "one of the most versatile players in Gaucho history."

"I've been looking for the right opportunity to get back into it," said Hanson. "I have an opportunity be part of something and build a program. It seemed like a good fit."

On the AVP pro tour, Hanson was named "Best Defender" for the 2009 season. She has partnered, among others, two-time Olympic Gold Medalist Kerri Walsh and Olympian Logan Tom.

"Brooke will bring a wealth of professional experience and will act as a great mentor for all of our student-athletes," said Oxnard athletic director Jonas Crawford in a release.

After an 0-6 start, the Condors, led by head coach David Fischer, won back-to-back matches against West Los Angeles and Antelope Valley last week.

"Obviously, it's not known as a volleyball powerhouse, but I don't see how it can't be," said Hanson of Oxnard. "We are in a good area.

"We actually have a good group of girls right now. They just haven't had a lot of experience."

It's not just the baseball players who are earning scholarships at Oxnard. Dominique Franz, the co-captain of the women's volleyball team, will play at Master's College in Santa Clarita this fall, according to the Oxnard College website.

The 6-foot middle blocker from Hueneme High led the team in kills.

The Oxnard College women's volleyball team may be struggling in WSC North play, having lost all eight conference matches, but coach David Fischer deserves some credit upgrading the program this season.

The Condors may only be 6-10 overall, but the program had won only 17
of its previous 125 matches dating back to 2001.

"Dave's doing a fine job," said Crawford.

The Moorpark College women's volleyball team walked the service line
in Tuesday night's Western State Conference showdown.

The Raiders, ranked No. 3 in the state, used effective serving to keep
the WSC's top two hitters, Jen Waddill and Nicole Bergmann, off
balance in a four-game win over No. 7 Santa Barbara City at Raider
Pavilion.

"That was really one of the key things," said Moorpark coach Steve
Burkhart. "We had a really good gameplan going into this match and we
really executed it."

Middle blocker Rachel Olinyk had 16 kills and four blocks, outside
hitter Shakila Balkhi had 16 kills and libero Mimi Sandler had 39 digs
as Moorpark (13-1) improved to 3-0 in WSC North play with a 25-20,
24-26, 25-22, 25-18.

Despite the top two hitters in WSC hitting percentage, Santa Barbara
fell to 12-2, 1-1.

"We got it done," saud Burkhart. "Our overall team passing and defense
really was the best it's been."

Ventura 3, Hancock 0: Sandra Alvarez had eight kills, Justine O'Connor had 22
assists, Andrea Bennett had 18 digs and Anne Westbrook had five blocks as Ventura (7-7, 2-1 WSC North) swept 25-20, 25-19, 25-18.

Cuesta 3, Oxnard 0:Outside hitter Andi Perez led the way offensively for Oxnard (6-5, 0-3 WSC North), which fell 25-16, 25-16, 25-10.

Meanwhile, Ventura College fell in three games at Glendale Tuesday, 25-13, 25-22, 25-16, despite 19 assists and eight kills from Justine O'Connor, three blocks by Anne Westbrook and six digs from Jessica Lara.

MC volleyball opens No. 6 in the state

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

Steve Burkhart was surprised this week when the Moorpark College women's volleyball team opened up ranked No. 6 in the initial state coaches poll.

"For me that's a little high," said the Moorpark coach.

But it's difficult to argue about the Raiders' start.

Moorpark improved to 6-1 Tuesday with a straight game win at West Los Angeles.

"I like the start and we hope we can continue it," said Burkhart. "We've beaten some good teams."

Moorpark's only loss came to two-time defending state champion El Camino, the top-ranked team in the state.

"We've got a ways to catch them," said Burkhart, "so there's some work to do."

All-State outside hitter Savannah Thomas has moved on to UC Riverside, but Moorpark returns key sophomores in outside hitter Una Siljegovic and middle blocker Rachel Olinyk.

"We relied on (Thomas) a lot last year," said Burkhart of the 2008 Western State Conference Player of the Year. "I think we have a little more balance this year."

Moorpark has been boosted by setter Olivia White, a La Reina High product who transferred from the San Francisco Institute of Art, and outside hitter Shakila Balkhi, a Simi Valley High product who transferred from the University of Newfoundland.

"That's about as far as you can bounce back," said Burkhart. "She's been the biggest surprise for us so far. She's been terrific."

Newbury Park High products Chelcy Westphal and Erika Smith, whose twin sister Rachel is playing at Cal Lutheran, have moved right into the lineup as freshmen.

They will all be needed if Moorpark is to retain its WSC North title.

"The league is going to be much better this year," said Burkhart. "Ventura has taken a big step up. Even a team like Oxnard (is looking good).

"Santa Barbara has already beaten two teams from the Orange Empire (Conference) in Golden West and Fullerton."

Ventura (4-4) has a strong freshmen class, including outside hitters Shelbee Younce (Buena High) and Chelsea O'Mara (Oxnard High), as well 6-foot-2 middle blocker Kayla Phipps (Buena)

Oxnard (4-0) is off to its best start in recent memory behind sophomore outside hitter Dominique Franz and freshman setter Vanessa Valdez. Eight of the 10 players on the Condors roster are from Oxnard.

Dominique Franz had 11 kills, Vanessa Valdez had 30 assists and Stacey Guijo had 19 digs as the visiting Oxnard College women's volleyball team, off to one of the best starts in program history, improved to 4-0 with a five-game win against Citrus College in Glendora Tuesday night.

Ashley Lajoie had 13 digs and Valdez and Shanna Wright had 12 digs apiece as the Condors prevailed 21-25, 25-13, 25-20, 13-25, 15-11. Franz added four aces and seven blocks.

Grace Edrada served an ace on match point as the Oxnard College women's volleyball team improved to 3-0 by picking up a dramatic five-game win at Los Angeles Harbor Friday night.

The game scores were 25-9, 18-25, 23-25, 25-13, 15-13.

Fresh start for OC volleyball

The Oxnard College women's volleyball team will be able to enjoy every milestone separately.

Tuesday night's three-game win over West Los Angeles was the first win for first-year head coach David Fischer.

The win wasn't, as previously suspected, the Condors first Western State Conference win since 2004, even though both are WSC programs.

The two teams are in opposite divisions. Only divisional play counts in the WSC North and WSC South standings.

But, based on Tuesday's performance, the Condors (1-2) won't have to wait long for another win.

"It's not unexpected with this group," said Fischer, who has two returning players, Victoria Seui and Becca Helling.

"The rest didn't know the history," said Fischer. "They came here with a fresh attitude and a willingness to work.
