Coach of the Year Mike Riley, Oregon State:

Jacquizz Rodgers became the first freshman named Pac-10 Offensive Player of the Year today when the Pacific-10 Conference announced its postseason honors.

Rey Maualuga, who was a freshman at St. Bonaventure High, was named Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Year.

Pinkard, Thomas protect USC lead

Hueneme High product Josh Pinkard reels in a tipped pass in the end zone to keep the USC football team ahead of Cal with 7:30 left in the third quarter at the Coliseum.

Rio Mesa High Kevin Thomas, who had an interception voided by a penalty in the first half, opens the next Cal possession with a sack.

Oregon bouyed by CCC stars

This Oregon football team, currently leading 10-3 at USC in the second quarter, is lead by several former California community college stars.

Quarterback Jeremiah Masoli lead City College of San Francisco to the state title last year. Receiver Terence Scott was a handful for both local programs at College of the Canyons. Punter Tim Taylor is a transfer from Santa Barbara City.

Stoops talks about UCLA

Arizona coach Mike Stoops spoke this week about his team's 31-10 win at UCLA last weekend:

"Really pleased with the way we played at UCLA. We just kind of roughed the game out and won pretty easily, could have scored a couple more touchdowns.

"We thought UCLA, with their offensive problems, would have trouble moving the ball consistently. We felt good about our matchup all the way through that game.

"Offensively, they're obviously searching for some playmakers. They've got some guys banged up. Defensively, I thought hey played a much better defensive game. They put some pressure on our offense."
