The second-seeded Ventura College women's basketball team (29-1) will host No. 15 Pasadena City (17-12) in the Southern California regional quarterfinals Saturday at 7 p.m.

Freshman guard Stella Ghazarian hit a 3-pointer with 12.7 seconds to play as Pasadena City came from 26 points down to knock off No. 18 Antelope Valley, 67-65, Wednesday night in the first round.

Ghazarian had 27 points, including seven 3-pointers, as the Lancers incredibly won their 17th straight playoff game at Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium despite falling behind 28-2 to start the game.

Pasadena has eliminated Ventura from the postseason in three of the last five years, 2007, 2009 and last spring, when Anna Shahinian's decisive 3-pointer with 33 seconds to play was allowed to stand, despite being released after the shot clock had expired.

Smith to start for VC

It looks like Ventura will open SCFA Northern Conference play Saturday against visiting Cerritos (2-3) with a new starting quarterback.

Buena High product Chase Smith, who came off the bench to lead Ventura to a 31-19 win over Pasadena City Oct. 1, is set for his first collegiate start.

"I've given Chase more of the first-team reps," said Mooshagian. "I'm going to use them both, but Chase may start the game."

At the season's midpoint, Koman is 64-for-152 passing for 572 yards, five touchdowns and five interceptions. Smith, who is 24 for 51 with 270 yards and two touchdowns, has yet to throw an interception.

Smith, who started the season at receiver, may have a new target, as Koman is now splitting his time at wideout.

"I'm giving Matt a lot of reps at receiver, too," said Mooshagian. "Matt may start the game at receiver."

Koman played both quarterback and receiver at College of the Charleston before playing basketball at Northern Kentucky.

"He's a very good athlete," said Mooshagian. "He's a very good wide receiver. He can definitely help us there, too."

The Moorpark College football team's first two scrimmages have been one-sided affairs.

"The first scrimmage, the offense looked really good," said head coach Jim Bittner. "The second scrimmage, the defense looked really good."

Which makes tonight's finale the rubber match.

Surprisingly, Bittner has already settled on a quarterback to take over for the graduated Zach Shultis, who has transferred to Cal Lutheran.

Former Westlake High quarterback Nick Owens, who led Pasadena City to a 4-0 start last fall, has taken over the reins, despite five other quarterbacks on the roster.

"He's a person that's key to our offense," said Bittner. "He's going to be our guy.

"The other guys are good too. If something happens, we should be all right. But (Owens) just adds another dimension. He can run and pass, he's as fast as any of our running backs."

But before that, Ventura (6-4) will visit No. 1 Pasadena City (7-1) Sunday. The Lancers were the only team to beat the Pirates during the 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons.

With its first win of the season over National Division opposition Saturday, the Ventura College football team approaches this week's bye with renewed vigor.

"You can see that the kids have some newfound swagger," said Ventura coach Steve Mooshagian. "They understand that if they play together, good things can happen."

The Pirates' scored 20 straight second-half points to dig out of a 23-13 hole at previously unbeaten Pasadena City.

"A couple of the kids have come to me and said, 'Last year I don't know if we could come back like that, A lot of us would be arguing with each other,' " said Mooshagian. "This team, they don't let that bother them.

"That's one of the signs that you've arrived, when you fight back through adversity and you do it together."

FINAL
Q1: Michael Davis' 18-yard TD run and DE Daniel Miller's fumble recovery in the end zone give VC a 13-0 lead.
Q2: PCC took a 14-13 lead on a 2-yard Telvin McMillian run and a 22-yard TD pass from Nick Owens to Reuben Thomas III. A roughing the passer flag set up Brian Gonzalez's 37-yard FG to end the first half.
Q3: Owens' 24-yard TD pass to Michael Harrison, Sims' 1-yard TD keeper, Sims' 17-yard scramble
Q4: Art Gilbreath's blocked punt and Jordan Anderson's recovery for a TD provided the winning points for VC.

Moorpark 22 17 0 0 -- 39
Compton 0 0 7 0 -- 7
FINAL

With 32-year head coach Jim Bittner's 199th career win, Moorpark (3-2) has its first three-game win streak since beating defending state champions El Camino in the 2007 Southern California regional playoffs for its sixth straight win. Anthony Pelupessy and Niall Padden returned interceptions for touchdowns and QB Zach Shultis scored on a 9-yard run as the Raiders took a 22-0 lead after one quarter. Shultis kicked a 22-yard FG, QB Dalton Botts threw a 25-yard TD pass to Stephen Henderson and Clint Abraham returned a 24-yard fumble return for a TD as Moorpark took a 39-0 halftime lead. The Raiders allowed just 5 yards of total offense in the first half and had six interceptions, which tied the school record set against West LA in 1972.

No. 16 Ventura (2-2) at No. 5 Pasadena City (4-0)
Jackie Robinson Stadium, 6 p.m.
LAST WEEK: Chaffey 12, Ventura 10; Pasadena 34, Desert 14
SERIES HISTORY: Pasadena leads 24-9-2 since 1931. Ventura won 26-20 last season.
GAME FACTS: Ventura opens one of the toughest runs in school history at a historic bogey team. The next three teams, and four of the remaining six, on the Pirates' schedule are among the last five unbeaten teams in SoCal. Behind QB Nick Owens (36-of-57 passing, 573 yards, 4 TDs), who earned Southern Conference Player of the Week honors by throwing for 334 yards and three TDs last week in just his second start, and a group that is No. 4 in scoring defense (16.2 ppg), Pasadena is off to its best start since 2007. RB Telvin McMillian (68 att., 305 yards, 8 TDs) is No. 2 in scoring. The Lancers are also No. 1 in net punting (37.8) and fourth-down conversions (10 of 11), No. 2 in sacks against (4) and No. 3 in kickoff coverage. Behind QB Antavius Sims (73-of-117 passing, 843 yards, 5 TDs, 91 att., 422 yards, 4 TDs), who leads SoCal in total offense with 1,265 yards, Ventura is No. 1 in first downs (98). RB Michael Davis (276 rush, 223 receiving, 308 returns) leads SoCal in all-purpose yardage. LBs Kenny Breaux and Brendan Daley are No. 3 (41) and No. 8 (38) in total tackles. Fifteen different Pirates have combined for 44 tackles for losses, led by Daley's 6.5.

No. 19 Moorpark (2-2) at Compton (1-3)
Tay Brown Stadium, 1 p.m.
LAST WEEK: Moorpark 35, Santa Barbara City 29; Compton 13, Antelope Valley 7
SERIES HISTORY: Moorpark leads, 22-4, in a series dating back to 1968. Moorpark won the last meeting, 58-21, in 2007, to clinch the WSC title.
GAME FACTS: Moorpark has a long history of success against its former WSC rival. The two teams played in the Raiders' first 13 seasons. The question is whether this Compton team will be able to generate enough offense to top the Raiders, who are back in the regional poll for the first time in nearly two years. Compton is in the Bottom 6 in scoring (34th, 12.8 ppg), total offense (34th, 211.5 ypg), passing (33rd, 136.0 ypg), rushing (32nd, 75.5 ypg). The Tartars have only completed 39.4 percent of passes. But the defense, led by DE Artkiest Jones (4 sacks, 7 tackles for loss), has been stout, especially in the red zone (No. 2, 36.8 percent), where opponents have only scored six TDs in 19 trips. It should be a challenge for a Moorpark offense centered around WR Chris Gant, who leads the state in receptions (39), receiving yards (554) and touchdowns (10). The question is whether Zach Shultis (68-of-113 passing, 687 yards, 7 TDs) or Dalton Botts (22-of-42 passing, 229 yards, 5 TDs) will be throwing him the majority of the passes.

CCSF women dominate boards, pay back Pasadena

Guard Marlee Rice had 17 points and the frontcourt piled up 32 offensive rebounds as the City College of San Francisco women's basketball team knocked out defending state champion Pasadena City College in the opening game of the Great Eight Thursday afternoon at Cal Lutheran's Gilbert Center.

The Rams (28-3), the top seed from Northern California, gained a measure of revenge for the victory, having lost to the Lancers (25-5) in the same game in overtime a year ago.

San Francisco overcame spendthrift finishing, shooting just 31.6 percent from the field, by dominating the offensive glass.

The Rams' vaunted three-headed backcourt of Rice, Mone Peoples and Brittney Allen combined for 45 points and 10 assists, but it was the frontcourt tandem of Shawnte Taylor and Ciera Foster, who piled up for 28 rebounds, that made the difference.

"We talked about the importance of possessions and they took it to heart," said CCSF coach Jamie Hayes.

Pasadena 29-19 with 5:27 to play in the first half, but San Francisco scored 40 of the next 54 points to take a 18-point lead with nine minutes to play.

Foul trouble limited Pasadena star center Dominique Scott to 13 points and nine rebounds.

"They're definitely used to scoring," said Hayes.

San Francisco moves on to face the winner of tonight's Ventura-Laney game in Saturday's 3 p.m. semifinal.

"I'm excited to see Ventura because I haven't seen them yet," said Hayes.

Pasadena is the only team to beat Ventura over the past two seasons. The Pirates are 65-0 against the rest of the state.

Should both teams win in Thursday's state quarterfinals, the Ventura College women's basketball team would face Pasadena City, which has handed the Pirates their only two losses of the past two seasons, in Saturday's 3 p.m. semifinal.

Both teams have rematches on their hands in the quarterfinals.

Pasadena knocked out its quarterfinal foe, San Francisco, with a 95-93 win in last year's quarterfinals. The teams' seeding and the 1 p.m. tipoff is a mirror image of a year ago.
