The Cal Lutheran football team will play its first game in its new stadium on Saturday night when it hosts Redlands in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener at 7 p.m.

The $8.9-million William Rolland Stadium still needs to pass one more inspection for the fire sprinkler on Wednesday, but CLU officials don't foresee that being a problem.

The stadium is not ready for full occupancy, so people will enter through the north gate next to the softball field rather than the stadium lobby.

The Cal Lutheran football team used a big third quarter to defeat visiting Pacific Lutheran 28-17 today at Moorpark College.
The 19th-ranked Kingsmen (1-1) erupted for 21 points out of halftime to extend their home winning streak to 10 games, albeit a few miles away from campus.
Frankie Jones caught eight passes for 170 yards, including a 70-yard touchdown, and Daniel Mosier rushed for 166 yards and two touchdowns.
CLU led only 7-3 at halftime, but put the game away with 21 unanswered points in the third quarter.
But it wasn't all pretty for the Kingsmen. CLU committed three turnovers and were penalized 14 times for 151 yards.
CLU has a bye before beginning defense of its Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title against rival Redlands on Oct. 1.

Cal Lutheran's new stadium will not be ready in time for the football team's home opener against Pacific Lutheran on Sept. 17.

The game will be played at Moorpark College at 1 p.m.

The sidewalks at CLU's William Rolland Stadium may not be complete until Thursday at the earliest, which will not be enough time for building officials to determine whether the field and grounds can be used for a game.

CLU officials are hopeful the stadium will be ready for the first Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game against Redlands on Oct. 1. The full stadium should be ready for full occupancy by the dedication and homecoming game against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Oct. 29.

CLU Women Fall Just Short

The Cal Lutheran women's basketball team fell just short of advancing to the SCIAC Tournament championship, losing 63-61 to host Redlands last night in the SCIAC Tournament semifinals.

The young Regals trailed by two with four seconds remaining when a steal led to a desperation heave by CLU's Donielle Griggs that missed the rim.

Griggs had forced a 55-55 tie with a 3-pointer and a long jumper with just over two minutes remaining.

But Redlands' Mariah Barbetti-Cort, a Ventura High graduate, went strong to the hoop and converted a three-point play for the Bulldogs providing a lead they would not relinquish.

Freshman Starla Wright led CLU with 19 points and Erica Whitley had 12. Despite a roster consisting mostly of freshmen and sophmores, CLU finished the season 19-7, which included an upset of the defending Division III champion.

In the other semifinal, Occidental defeated Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 72-69 and will host Redlands on Saturday at 5 p.m. in the tournament final.

The Cal Lutheran baseball team rebounded from its home loss to Redlands in dominating fashion yesterday with Mike Roe and Chase Tigert tossing complete-game shutouts to lead CLU to 11-0 and 2-0 victories at Redlands.

Redlands hit only .145 (9 for 62) and had only one extra base hit, just one day after beating CLU 5-3 at Ullman Stadium.

Roe, a Simi Valley High graduate, improved to 4-0 and had at least one strikeout in five of the first six innings. The senior right-hander finished the game with his career-high seventh strikeout of the game.

The last time CLU pitchers tossed back-to-back complete games was in 1994 when Sam Arroyo and Marc Weiss beat La Verne 2-0 and 4-0, respectively.

CLU (22-6, 10-2) is two games back of Pomona-Pitzer (25-3, 12-0) in the SCIAC race. The Kingsmen will host a non-conference series against Menlo (11-14) with a single game on Thursday at 3 p.m. and a Friday doubleheader scheduled to start at 11 a.m.
