Forfeits alter WSC races

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

The WSC North men's standings were altered this week by news that the Los Angeles Pierce men's team had fielded an ineligible player in wins over Oxnard Jan. 4 and Hancock Jan. 11.

The forfeits lifted Hancock (17-5, 4-1) into first place by a half game over Ventura, Moorpark and Cuesta, who are all 3-1, and kept reeling Oxnard (9-9, 2-2) within touching distance.

WSC commissioner Jerry White has been busy.

Citrus, which lost the SCFA Western Conference football title because of three forfeits due to an ineligible player, also forfeited 13 women's basketball games this month because of an ineligible player, throwing the WSC South race into chaos. The Owls No. 2-ranked men's basketball team also had its head coach Chris Victor and assistant coach Patrick Johnson suspended for two and eight games, respectively, because of recruiting violations this month.

Moorpark knocked Citrus from the ranks of the unbeaten in the Western Conference, then Citrus followed by forfeiting three previous victories, including a conference win over Los Angeles Harbor. The forfeits knocked the Owls from title contention. By virtue of its win over Moorpark last month, Long Beach City has clinched a berth in the Central Division title game (likely against top-ranked Riverside). Although the Raiders can gain a share of the title with a win over Harbor Saturday combined with a Long Beach loss to Citrus.

Grinding it out

After two dramatic last-minute wins over Chaffey a year ago, the Moorpark College football team made sure to control Saturday's 27-17 win over the visiting Panthers.

One week after letting a 12-7 fourth-quarter lead slip at Long Beach, the Raiders jumped out to a 24-0 lead early in the third quarter.

"Chaffey has some skill players over there that can terrorize you if you're not careful," said Moorpark interim coach Will Thurston. "But the game seemed to be going pretty quick. Time was on our side after a while."

Possession has been emphasis for the Raiders during conference play. Moorpark hasn't lost the turnover battle since Sept. 24.

"We've been doing a decent job of hanging on to it," said Thurston. "We're a little bit more protective in the way plays are being called."

Both county community college football teams will enter this weekend a game back in the conference race with two to play.

No. 9-ranked Ventura (5-3, 2-1), stuck in the three-team 2-1 pack that includes Hancock and El Camino, hosts Canyons (3-5, 0-3). First-place Cerritos (5-3, 3-0) visits Bakersfield Saturday and hosts Hancock on the final day of the regular season Nov. 12.

No. 12-ranked Moorpark (5-3, 2-1), trailing first-place Long Beach City (4-4, 3-0) and Citrus (5-3, 3-0), visits the Owls Saturday afternoon in Glendora.

Both Ventura and Moorpark are one win away from clinching bowl eligibility.

Offseason study earns Mouton honors

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

Physically, Marquise Mouton may have been one of Moorpark College top defensive backs a year ago.

But his unfamiliarity with the Raiders' system kept him off the field.

A year later, the sophomore cornerback knows the defense as well as any of his teammates.

It showed Saturday in Moorpark's 54-7 win over rival Los Angeles Pierce, when Mouton's pass coverage meant a 35-yard interception return for a touchdown, three pass deflections and a SCFA Western Conference Player of the Week honor.

"With Marquise, I think it's more the mental part of the game," said Moorpark defensive coordinator Mike Stuart. "In the spring, he was there every single day. He stayed after with me and (defensive back coach Mike) Argo. He learned all the different checks.

Usually, a safety has the knowledge and perspective to make sure the defense is making the right adjustments.

"Now you hear Marquise from the other side of the field checking everything," said Stuart. "He's normally not a big vocal guy, but he's definitely becoming more of a leader by showing his action on the field."
