Andy Stanfield shot a 4-over-par 148 and Andrew Garcia shot a 7-over 151 as the Ventura College men's golf team clinched a berth in Monday's Southern California regionals with a second-place finish at the WSC Championships last Monday at Marshallia Ranch.

The Pirates will tee off Monday at Glendora Country Club. The top two teams and next six individuals advance to the state championships May 15 in Santa Maria.

The playoff fields have been paired down to the Great Eight and every game tonight has a trip to the state Final Four next weekend at Consumnes River College in Sacramento riding on it.

Buoyed by playoff performances by shooter Carlotta Kloppenburg, young point guard Rian Mew and reserve forward Candace Sakuda, among others, the Ventura College women's basketball team (31-1) have survived difficult games with Pasadena City and Cypress.

The Pirates welcome Foothill Conference champion San Bernardino Valley (28-3) to the VC Athletic Event Center tonight having won 22 straight games, including two tight, physical, dramatic games against the Wolverines Dec. 10 (53-45) and Dec. 30 (49-46). The two top defensive teams in the state should stage another similar showdown tonight.

The road warriors known as the Ventura College men's basketball team are set for a regional semifinal at No. 4 San Bernardino Valley, the Foothill Conference champion.

At the VC Athletic Event Center, the biggest question will be the health of the state co-Player of the Year, Ventura center Destinee LaFountain, who has not practiced this week after sustaining an arm injury in the Pirates' win Saturday over Pasadena City College.

Former LaReina High legend Margaret Mohr brings her No. 10 Cypress College women's basketball team to Ventura for the third straight season to visit the second-seeded Pirates.

Condors earn SoCals berth

The Oxnard College women's cross country team earned one of two at-large berths into Friday's Southern California championships at Guasti Park in Ontario.

The Top 7 in the WSC earn automatic berths. Oxnard finished eighth behind Rio Mesa High product Karla Leos (18th) and Hueneme High product Cristal Gutierrez (36th), but did finish 22nd out of 34 teams on the course at the SoCal Preview last month.

"That must have been one of the considerations," said Oxnard coach Gino Sharp.
Despite being the last team into the meet, Sharp isn't settling for 28th place.

"We may be ranked last, but we're going to go out there and compete," said Sharp. "I've got my eye on several schools that we can pass."

The Condors join the Moorpark and Ventura men's and women's teams at regionals, as well as Oxnard sophomore Pepe Hernandez, who earned an individual berth.

There is a chance for some weather on the flat grass and dirt course.

"It could be wet and fun," said Sharp.
