Behind conference championships in twice as many sports as any other conference school, Ventura College has won the Western State Conference Supremacy Award yet again.

Ventura won 2011-12 WSC titles in eight different sports -- women's basketball, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, and water polo, as well as men's swimming and tennis.

"We're very proud of the diligence of our student-athletes, coaches and staff, which produced such success on and off the playing field," said Ventura athletic director Will Cowen, "despite the strenuous fiscal climate."

Twelve of Ventura's 18 programs achieved a cumulative 3.0 grade point average. Several of its programs combined to raise more than $10,000 for local anti-cancer charities. Ventura was forced to make $125,000 in budget cuts for the 2011-12 school year.

The Pirates have won the award, which measures school's combined competitive prowess, for 14 straight seasons and 19 overall, both WSC records.

Ventura earned 116.0 points from 18 sports, topping Canyons (89.0), Santa Barbara City (81.0) and Cuesta (77.5). Moorpark finished seventh with 58.0 points. Oxnard finished 14th with 19.0 points.

On a statewide level, Ventura finished sixth in the National Alliance of Two-Year College Athletic Administrators (NATYCAA) Cup for the 2011-12 academic year.

Fresno City College took the statewide and national award, which measures how an athletic department achieves in regional and state competition.

"We're not there yet," said Cowen, "but we're approaching elite status as an intercollegiate athletic department on both the state and national levels."

Ventura won its first state championship in women's tennis in 2011-12, when women's swimming (third), women's basketball (tied for third) and men's swimming (fourth) also had impressive seasons.

Among CCCAA schools, Fresno was followed by Mount San Antonio, Orange Coast, Santa Rosa, Riverside and Ventura.

Despite trailing after the fall season, the Ventura College athletic department rallied during the winter and spring to win the Western State Conference Supremacy Award for the 13th consecutive school year.

Ventura has retained the conference's all-sports trophy since sharing it with Bakersfield in 1998-99. Behind five conference titles and three runner-up finishes, Ventura amassed 99 points. Canyons (78 points), Santa Barbara City (77.5), Glendale (73) and Cuesta (70) rounded out the Top 5.

"It's a testament to the hard work of the coaches, the support staff and the student-athletes," said Ventura athletic director Will Cowen. "It's a group effort."

Ventura captured WSC titles in men's swimming, men's tennis, women's water polo, women's soccer, women's basketball. No other WSC school won more than three titles during the 2010-11 school year.

Moorpark (53 points) was eighth. Oxnard (29 points) was 13th.

Ventura College, which has captured the WSC all-sports Supremacy Award for 12 straight years, has regained the lead for this year's award after the winter season.

Ventura trailed Cuesta by four points after the fall campaign. Behind the women's basketball conference title, Ventura has regained the lead entering the spring season, 49-46.

Moorpark sits in fifth place with 37 points.
