Tauau is playing for her grandmother

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

As teenagers go, never mind basketball stars, Nikki Tauau is thoughtful and humble.

Compliment her on a game well played and the former Pacifica High forward will deflect the words to her Oxnard College teammates. Marvel at that humility, and she'll mention those responsible for her upbringing, including her grandmother, Fepineia'i.

"She has that affect on me," said Tauau. "She makes me want to better myself."

That strong connection is what makes Tauau's sophomore season, during which she's averaged 16.7 points and 9.8 rebounds per game, even more impressive.

Tauau was in West Valley City, Utah last month, visiting family for the holidays, when Fepineia'i, who suffers from a neurological condition, was rushed to the hospital.

"It was the day I was supposed to come back for practice," said Tauau. "I just couldn't find the strength to leave her. My heart was with her."

Tauau stayed by her grandmother's side for weeks, only leaving to go for a run or do some dribbling drills in the snow.

She returned to the Condors Jan. 14 after Fepineia'i, who is now on hospice, told Tauau to go home and finish school.

"She's the reason why I push myself to be a better person," said Tauau. "She's always wanted the best for us."

Upon her return last week, Tauau had 22 points and 11 rebounds against Santa Barbara City and 28 points and nine rebounds against Los Angeles Pierce.

Despite going nearly a month without shooting a basketball, she made 12 of 16 free throws against the Vaqueros and 5 of 6 3-pointers against the Brahmas.

"It was difficult," said Tauau. "I would have loved to have the chance over break to get into better shape... Coach (Phil) Sherman expects me to play 40 minutes, I could use that extra push in my step."

But, if anything, the past month has reinforced Tauau's priorities.

"Being away from my grandmother, it just gives me that drive to keep playing," said Tauau. "I feel like I do it all for her."

Condors finding rare air

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

The Oxnard College men's basketball team finds itself in a strange position this week.
In control of the Western State Conference race.

Wednesday's results, which included a 70-68 OC win over visiting Santa Barbara City, put the Condors two full games ahead of the chasing pack in the WSC North, the two-loss crew of Ventura, Hancock and Santa Barbara.

It's probably been a generation, since the title-winning teams of Leroy Porter in 1979, 1980 and 1982, since the Condors last wrapped their talons around the WSC in such a way.

"Last year, we knocked off some big fish," said Oxnard coach Jason Cunningham. "This year, we're trying to be the big fish."

With teams led by Chris Massie, Jeremiah Massey and others, Oxnard has had the talent to be in this position previously. But this group, led by 6-foot-4 sophomore forward Scooter Holmes, showed its mettle Wednesday night.

Santa Barbara City may have lost by 30 points at Condor Center on Nov. 27, but the Vaqueros were coming off an upset win over Ventura Saturday and built a 60-53 lead with less than seven minutes to play.

"There were more prepared for what we were trying to do," said Holmes.

With high-scoring sophomore Marc Pajund out injured and high-scoring freshman Marcus Falley limited to 13 points, Holmes, who sometimes fulfils his role as a sophomore leader by yielding some of the glory to his younger teammates, took control, sparking a key 13-3 run with a thunderous dunk in transition.

"Because everybody else is playing so well, I think Scooter sometimes takes a back seat," said Cunningham. "But we needed our all-conference player."

After Malcolm Pope's steal and layup tied the game 62-62, Holmes gave Oxnard its first lead with a put back with 2:28 to play.

"It was just one of those nights when I had to play well for us to win," said Holmes, who finished with 23 points, including 19 in the second half, and six rebounds. "It was on my back."

Santa Barbara had the ball trailing by 2 with 12 seconds to play, but Holmes' steal inside
clinched the win.

"We played like a team that's trying to be a champion is supposed to," said Cunningham.
"We were down, we had the gut check and we were committed to do the things to get ourselves back in the basketball game."

Melonas honored

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

Ventura College sophomore Mike Melonas was honored as this week's WSC North men's basketball Player of the Week.

Melonas, the 6-foot-7 sophomore center from Ventura High, had 19 points, seven rebounds, four assists, three blocks and two steals in the Pirates 78-68 win over rival Moorpark on Jan. 12.

Melonas shared the honor with Hancock forward Ali Langford, who entered this week leading the WSC North in scoring at 21.9 points per game and had 23 points and 15 rebounds the Bulldogs 83-64 win at Moorpark Wednesday.

Dogged days

Wednesday night's WSC North women's showdown between first-place Ventura and second-place Los Angeles Pierce developed into a midseason test of depth.

The Pirates practiced Tuesday without three of its four leading scorers, Destinee LaFountain (ankle), Rebecca Griffin (flu-like symptoms) and Ja'Lisa Gatlin (flu-like symptoms).

But the Brahmas were forced to play without its second-leading scorer Amari Hampton, who entered the week No. 9 in the state in scoring at 18.8 points per game.

Interestingly enough, Hampton is only third in scoring among WSC North players. In Pierce guard Monica Jackson (26.5 ppg) and Hancock guard Camille Zumbro (24.8 ppg), the WSC North features the state's Top 2 scorers.

Ennis suspended tonight

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

James Ennis will not make the trip to Santa Barbara City tonight with the rest of the Ventura College men's basketball team.

The sophomore star will serve a one-game suspension after being ejected Wednesday night against Moorpark after receiving two technical fouls.

Ventura coach Will Cowen grudgingly accepted the decision.

"Even if the commissioner wanted to," said Cowen, "he doesn't have a mechanism to rescind a technical foul."

Perhaps more importantly, WSC commissioner Jerry White determined the ejection was not a decorum violation, which means Ennis is not a strike away from being suspended for the rest of the season.

Midway through the first half, Ennis was teed up for apparently pushing Moorpark's Jamal McClerkin. Cowen said game film proved there was no push. White said the film was "inconclusive."

"We have two categories, verbal and physical abuse," said White. "The first (technical) does not appear to fit either one of those categories."
