St. Bonaventure High product Greg Christine, the resurgent guard for the University of Washington, broke his fibula in today's dramatic win against Arizona, according to Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times.

Szakacsy on the mend

With Rudy Carpenter no longer in Tempe, senior Danny Sullivan will open the season as Arizona State's starting quarterback.

After a strong spring, Camarillo High product Samson Szakacsy was pushing Sullivan for playing time before his throwing arm became sore last month.

"He had a great spring," said Arizona State coach Dennis Erickson Tuesday. "He was 100 percent and he was really battling for that job. About two weeks into camp, he started to get some soreness in the tricep.

"That bothered him and continues to bother him.

"I would like to think that as we go through the week, he'll throw it and may have a chance to play on Saturday."

With Szakacsy's health in question, freshman Brock Osweiler, rather than redshirting, will get a taste of the action Saturday against Idaho State

"You have to, that arm has been hurt off and on since he's been here. You can't depend on that. You have to find a quarterback that will be there."

Gronkowski "week to week"

Rob Gronkowski, Arizona's star tight end, remains slowed by a back injury.

"We're going to evaluate him week to week," said Arizona coach Mike Stoops Tuesday. "We're going to make sure with him that he's symptom-free before we put him out there."

Gronkowski was the first team All-Pac-10 and third-team All-America last year, catching 47 passes for 672 yards and 10 TDs despite missing the first three games.

McCarthy to return for MC men Saturday

The Moorpark College men's basketball team can expect a boost in its final game of the regular season. The Raiders will welcome back head coach Remy McCarthy, who expected to miss the rest of the season after spinal surgery Dec. 31, for their home game against Oxnard Saturday.

"If I was going to come back for any game, it would be (tonight) for the sophomore's last home game," said McCarthy Wednesday, when he attended the Ventura at Oxnard game without a neck brace.

Third-place Moorpark (17-10, 7-4) isn't out of the WSC North picture.

The Raiders, looking to improve their postseason credentials with a home win over fourth-place Oxnard (13-15, 6-5), can share the title with a win combined with Ventura and Cuesta losses.

Which isn't completely out of the question, considering the events of Jan. 28, when Hancock defeated Ventura, 64-59, and Cuesta needed a 23-5 second-half spurt to survive Pierce, 54-48.

Parker leaves MC men

Freshman forward Redmond Parker, one of the Moorpark College men's basketball team's best inside players, has quit the team, head coach Remy McCarthy confirmed.

Parker, who was averaging 8.0 points and 5.9 rebounds, left the team after the Raiders 78-52 loss at Ventura Jan. 17.

"That's exactly what happened," said McCarthy. "I don't know (why), I really don't."

McCarthy said Parker's father, "Ghostbusters" singer Ray Parker Jr., was part of the decision.

"He said he talked to his dad," said McCarthy. "His dad said, 'If you're not making any money doing it, you should quit.'

The Calabasas High product was one of the Raiders' top freshmen and inside presences

"We're moving on."

Selleh out

Jessi Selleh, the starting small forward on the Ventura College women's basketball team, will sit out tonight's game against Oxnard with the ankle injury she suffered in Wednesday night's win over Santa Barbara City.

"I'm out," said Selleh, sitting in the stands with a wrap on her ankle before the game. "Why does basketball have to be so difficult?"

The dramatic ending wasn't the only scare the Ventura College women's basketball team and its fans received Wednesday night in Santa Barbara.

Sophomore Jessi Selleh collapsed in a heap under the Vaqueros' basket early in the second half and had to be carried off the court by assistant coach Robin Hester after suffering an ankle injury.

But the former Royal High star, who missed all but six games of last season with a back injury, doesn't seem a threat to miss many games.

"It's just a little swollen," said Selleh, while on crutches after the game. "Coach just said to get ready for Saturday (against Oxnard)."

McCarthy to miss the rest of the season

Moorpark College men's basketball coach Remy McCarthy, who had spinal surgery Dec. 31 to correct a bulging disc in his neck, will miss the rest of the season.

"I saw my neurologist last week and we decided that I take the year off," said McCarthy before his team faced cross-county rival Ventura on Saturday.

McCarthy attempted to return to practice days after his surgery, but found his emotional response to the game conflicted with his body's need to heal.

"It's the tension. Some people handle it better than others. It's been pretty well documented that I can't."

Moorpark was 10-2 and ranked in the state coaches' poll when McCarthy went under the knife, but the Raiders have dropped two of eight games without their veteran coach. Star guard Matt Hornbuckle has also been out during the span.

McCarthy return on hold

The WSC North campaign may begin tonight against visiting Hancock, but Moorpark College men's basketball coach Remy McCarthy will not return to the Raiders' bench within the next two weeks.

"I wouldn't be a bit surprised if it's a case where it's later rather than sooner," said McCarthy Tuesday night.

The veteran coach is recovering from spinal surgery Dec. 31 in Ventura and, despite a visit to the Raiders' practice Tuesday, does not expect to return anytime soon.

Moorpark (10-6) , previously ranked in the state Top 20, has lost four straight games without its head coach.

"I tried to go back yesterday and today," said McCarthy. "When I was done with practice today, I said 'I shouldn't be out here.' "

"I thought to myself, 'If we hadn't have lost four in a row, I wouldn't be here.' "

It is just impossible for McCarthy to relax and coach at the same time.

"I'm not the guy to sit and watch. I get tense. It's just too hard... It's not my personality."

McCarthy doesn't have a timetable for his return.

"I don't know. I just know for the rest of the week. I don't plan on going to Cuesta (Saturday). I wouldn't be a bit surprised if it's a case where it's later rather than sooner.

"So much of the decision is based on my personality and how I coach."

In his current condition, McCarthy is unable to be in the same gym as his Raiders, but he will attempt to scout tonight's key game between Cuesta and Ventura at the VC Athletic Event Center.

USC running back Joe McKnight has left the game with a "toe sprain," according to an announcement in the press box.

His return is "questionable."

McCarthy has neck surgery

One week before the start of Western State Conference play, the Moorpark College men's basketball team lost its head coach for an indefinite period of time after McCarthy underwent spinal surgery Wednesday at Community Memorial Hospital in Ventura.

"They're a terrific group of kids," said McCarthy last week. "You don't try to get out of coaching this team.

"We're 10-4, it's not like we're 4-10... If you're 4-10 you might say, 'Well, jeez, my neck hurts."

Neurosurgeon Dr. Moustapha Abou-Samra removed the herniated C5-C6 disc in McCarthy's neck and fused the remaining space.

Moorpark athletic director Howard Davis termed the surgery "perfect." McCarthy, in his 12th season as Moorpark head coach, was in recovery by the time the Raiders tipped off against visiting Miramar College at Raider Pavilion.

Moorpark, ranked No. 20 in the state coach's poll, fell to 0-3 without McCarthy with an 87-80 loss.

A time table for his return isn't set, but McCarthy was confident he could leave the team in the hands of his veteran assistant, Mick Cady. The Raiders also added three more assistant coaches this season, Marvin Lea, Greg Murphy and Kenny Plummer.

Moorpark (10-5) visits College of the Sequoias Saturday in Visalia before opening WSC North play Wednesday with a visit from Hancock College. McCarthy's return isn't scheduled, but he isn't expected to be available for those games.

"You don't have to be a neurosurgeon to know that you're not going to Visalia three days after having your disk removed," said McCarthy.

OC men's basketball loses McLucas

Oxnard College star guard Ryan McLucas may be lost for the season.

Doctors last week found a cyst behind the sore knee of the former Rio Mesa High standout, who was averaging 19.7 points, 5.0 rebounds and 4.0 steals per game before missing Saturday's overtime win at College of the Canyon.

He is expected to be lost for the remainder of the season.

"That's what it looks like," said head coach Jason Cunningham. "The doctor's prescription was for him to take six weeks off... We've talked about him getting a medical (redshirt)."

Losing perhaps its best two-way player, who Cunningham calls "the best defender in the WSC," is just the latest blow to a promising season.

McLucas' injury means a starting place for St. Bonaventure High product Nick Molina, who Cunningham called "another tough kid defensively" and "court savvy."

Many of McLucas' shots may go to freshman Marc Pajund, a high-scoring wing from Compton Centennial.

Healing up and hoping

Moorpark coach Jim Bittner said his team will be boosted in its Top 25 clash at No. 2 College of the Canyons by some of the players who missed games with shoulder injuries last month, although it remains unclear who.

Running back Danny Mosier, who was leading Southern California in rushing and touchdowns when he was hurt against Fullerton, is expected back, as well as cornerback Roy Holmes and safety Alex Tennyson.

"They're questionable, but I think we'll get them back," said Bittner.

Middle linebacker Miller Aupiu is one of the wounded who still has some healing to do.

"We haven't been able to get him in pads yet," said Bittner Tuesday. "Until we can get him back in pads, I won't know if he'll be able to make it."

Sanchez on his injury

USC quarterback Mark Sanchez says he is fine after leaving the game midway through the third quarter with a knee injury following a sack by Oregon defensive end Nick Reed

"I think it's going to be just fine," said Sanchez. "It just kind of bent a little funny... It didn't pop or anything. Good thing I was wearing a brace."

After being sacked by Oregon's Nick Reed midway through the third quarter, USC quarterback Mark Sanchez stayed down before limping off the field. He seemed to wrench his knee.

Mitch Mustain took over on the next USC possession and was intercepted in the end zone by Jairus Byrd.

A USC spokesperson just announced in the press box that "Sanchez might return."

Manakae calls it the "Year of the Shoulder"

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

Moorpark College athletic trainer Vance Manakae has been plenty busy this fall dealing with the football team's injury situation, including an incredible eight shoulder injuries.

"We've had a combination of separations and dislocations," said Manakae. "We've had one surgery already (cornerback Evan Yabu)."

The rash of bum shoulders has hit the Raiders across the roster, including star running back Dan Mosier, who was leading the state in rushing before his injury, and a series of linebackers.

"It's the Year of the Shoulder," said Manakae. "But we should be healthy by the time we go to Canyons, as long as we don't pick up any more injuries in practice."

From UCLA Sports Information:

UCLA redshirt junior fullback Trevor Theriot, who was injured in practice on Wednesday, has a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, according to an MRI. He will require surgery and will miss the remainder of the season.

UCLA starting center Micah Reed (Nordhoff High) could be out for a few weeks after historic spraining the medial collateral ligament in his right knee during the third quarter of UCLA's 59-0 loss to No. 18 BYU in Provo, Utah yesterday.

Reed, one of only two players with starting experience on UCLA's offensive line, will undergo an MRI exam tomorrow. He is not expected to play when UCLA begin its Pac-10 Conference season on Saturday against Arizona at the Rose Bowl.

UCLA's loss to BYU was its biggest loss since a 76-0 drubbing to USC in 1929.

Raiders lose Yabu

The Moorpark College football team's season-opening 28-17 win at Los Angeles Pierce Saturday was dulled by an injury to one of its brightest freshmen.

Evan Yabu, a freshman from Thousand Oaks High, separated his shoulder after starting Saturday's game at cornerback.

"That was the only negative on the game," said Moorpark coach Jim Bittner, who didn't know when or if Yabu would return this season.
