The Ventura College football team, readying for its biggest game since the 1999 Southern California title game, moved up to No. 10 in this week's Southern California coaches poll.
No. 10 Ventura (6-1, 3-0) visits No. 6 Bakersfield (7-1, 4-0) Saturday night with first place in the Northern Conference on the line.
The teams are also ranked No. 15 and No. 9, respectively in the state.
Cerritos, which handed Ventura its only loss 36-35 on Sept. 26, is ranked No. 2 in the South and No. 3 in the state. El Camino, which handed Bakersfield its only loss 40-24 that same night, is ranked No. 1 both in the region and state.

The Ventura College football team, which is idle this week, rose two spots to No. 23 in JC Gridwire's national Top 25 after improving to 5-1 with Saturday's 26-20 win at Pasadena City.
Four SCFA Northern Conference teams are ranked, including No. 16 Bakersfield (5-1), No. 21 Hancock (5-1) and No. 24 Canyons (4-2), which visits Ventura next week and barely beat Moorpark last week.
Cerritos (5-0), which handed Ventura its only loss, 36-35, last month, is ranked No. 8.
There is no regional or state poll this week, since so many teams are on their bye weeks.

JC Gridwire has released its national two-year college football preseason poll.
Neither of the two local schools received a vote, but SCFA Northern Division foe College of the Canyons is No. 16.
Both the WSC North's top teams found themselves in the men's basketball state Top 20 this week.
Ventura (23-8) slipped one spot to No. 18 and Cuesta (23-10) returned to the poll at No. 20.
Tied atop the standings at 8-3 with one game to play, the two teams will share the WSC North spoils with wins Saturday night.
