What type of effect does a losing season have on a football team?

The Moorpark College football team began the season with 94 players on its roster and, according to equipment manager Tommy Arellano, 111 players have donned the black and blue this season.

Yet, nine losses into a winless season, only 52 Raiders remain on the roster entering Saturday night's 42nd Citrus Cup game against Ventura at Griffin Stadium.

Moorpark was boosted by the return of receiver Justin Bradley and linebacker Jerrell Holland last week against Glendale.

The Oxnard College women's volleyball team may be struggling in WSC North play, having lost all eight conference matches, but coach David Fischer deserves some credit upgrading the program this season.

The Condors may only be 6-10 overall, but the program had won only 17
of its previous 125 matches dating back to 2001.

"Dave's doing a fine job," said Crawford.

No. 10-ranked Ventura's football season essentially comes down to the next two games against No. 7 Bakersfield (7-1, 4-0) and No. 8 Hancock (7-1, 3-1).

One win would probably mean a postseason berth. Two wins, barring a letdown in the
season finale against Moorpark, would mean the Northern Conference title.

"We have control of our destiny and we want to maintain control," said Mack.

A year ago, Ventura defeated Bakersfield for the first time in 22 years, 31-17, breaking a 15-game losing streak to the Renegades. The two schools first faced each other in 1932.

Following its 62-28 loss to Hancock Saturday, the Moorpark College football team (0-7, 0-3) has lost 12 of 13 games since Sept. 27, 2008.

Its lone win came in double overtime, 51-44, against Glendale on Nov. 8, 2008.

The good news is that quarterback Ian Shutlis, who threw for 303 yards and four touchdowns against Hancock, continues to play well, speedy receiver Justin Bradley returned from injury with a touchdown catch and the Raiders face a two-game stretch against the other two 0-3 teams in conference play.

Nobody in the state has caught more touchdown passes than Moorpark receiver Chris Gant, who has scored touchdowns on 10 of his 36 receptions.

Bouncing back from Tuesday night's 1-0 loss to rival Moorpark, the Ventura College women's soccer team punished visiting Hancock College with a school record 16-0 win Thursday night at the VC Sportsplex.

Sophomore attacker Jazmarae Strozier set a school record by scoring an incredible seven times, including five times in the first half and four times in a 14-minute stretch late in the first half that gave the Pirates a 9-0 halftime lead.

Yadira Toraya scored in the first minute, while Monique Orocio, Carissa Arce and Alyssa McDonald also had two-goal games.

Warming up at Griffin Stadium, the Moorpark College football team is 0-4 for just the second time in school history.

The Raiders must beat College of the Canyons tonight to avoid the first 0-5 start in school history.

The 1983 Raiders started 0-4 before beating the Cal Lutheran JV. Moorpark really started 0-7 against community college opposition that season.

In its 42nd year of football, Moorpark College has never won less than two games in a season. The Raiders were 2-8 in 1981 and 1983, starting 1-4 both seasons.

The No. 14 Ventura College and No. 6 Cerritos College football teams have combined to outscore their opponents 259-50 through the first three weeks of the community college football season.

But their six opponents are a combined 1-17.

That one win? Santa Barbara City's shocking upset of Canyons.

VC and Cerritos meet Saturday night at the VC Sportsplex.

The Ventura County Fusion men's soccer team suffered the worst loss in the three-year history of the club Friday night against the Hollywood United Hitmen.

Jamie Chaves scored in the third minute as the Hitmen rolled, 4-0.

"It was a performance of outstanding mediocrity," Fusion head coach Graham Smith told Star corresponded Danny Page. "Sadly tonight we were lacking a will to win."

Cuesta remains the mountain to climb in the WSC North for the Ventura College baseball team.

The Pirates were within one game of the Cougars a fortnight ago after sweeping a two-game series with Moorpark by a historic 36-2 margin.

But Cuesta, which has won 10 of the past 12 WSC North titles, swept Ventura 7-1 and 15-4 March 21 and 24, respectively, and the Pirates have now lost five straight.

Cuesta (20-10, 13-2) leads Hancock (17-12, 10-5) and Ventura (12-11, 7-8) by three and six games, respectively. The Cougars held off second-place Ventura by four games last spring.

A showdown for third place in the Western State Conference's North division Tuesday afternoon developed into Ventura College's biggest baseball win over rival Moorpark College.

A.J. Gallardo and Rey Garcia combined for six hits and nine runs scored and Ryan Plum allowed one run and six hits in seven innings as host Ventura battered Moorpark, 29-1, to win its sixth straight WSC North game.

Plum (2-1) scattered six hits and walked one, a severe contrast to the eight Raider pitchers who combined to allow 17 hits, 13 walks and nine hit batsmen.

Ventura's Colin LaVoie scored four runs without an official at bat. He was walked three times and was hit twice.

Gallardo and Garcia were both 3 for 4. Garcia added a two-run home run. Moorpark's Harrison Kain was 3 for 4 with the lone RBI.

Ventura (11-6, 6-3) opened the day a game behind WSC North leaders Cuesta and Hancock and a game ahead of the Raiders (8-12, 4-5).

Previously, Ventura's best day against Moorpark had been the 11-0 win at the tail end of last season. Moorpark swept a two-game series with Ventura in 2002 with wins of 24-8 and 36-12. It also defeated Ventura 23-2 in 1978.

The largest margin for a Ventura win remains 32-0 over Compton in 1984. Second baseman Dave Patterson was 6 for 6 that day. His son, third baseman Tyler Patterson, picked up an RBI as a late substitution Tuesday.

The two teams play again Thursday at Moorpark.

The state semifinal between the Ventura and Pasadena City college women's basketball teams will match perhaps the two top 3-point shooters in the state.

Pasadena's Malia Basavand and Ventura's Erika Ward have both stroked 10 3-pointers in a game this season.

Basavand leads the state in 3-pointers with 111.

The Ventura College women's basketball team returns to the state Final Four Saturday night at 7 p.m., five years after the Pirates' nine-year streak of Final Four appearances was snapped by eventual champion Cypress at the VC Athletic Event Center.

"I'm feeling forfuntate that we can play one more game," said Ventura coach Ned Mircetic. "And then (Saturday) night, we'll be playing to play one more night."

Ventura was 7-2 in state semifinals from 1995 to 2003, falling in the first to eventual champion Los Angeles Harbor and in the last to eventual state champion Orange Coast.

In the decade from 1995 to 2004, Ventura won the state title five times and was eliminated by the eventual state champion five times.

Mircetic pulls even with Martinez

Saturday night's regional final win over No. 7 Canyons allowed Ventura College women's basketball coach Ned Mircetic to draw even with former San Mateo College coach Tom Martinez as California Community College women's basketball second-winningest coach.

Mircetic is 563-84 (.870) in 19 seasons coaching Ventura. Martinez, who coached multiple sports and was also known as Tom Brady's personal quarterback coach, was 563-103 in 21 years at College of San Mateo.

"It's an honor to be in that type of company," said Mircetic. "With all that he's accomplished, not just basketball, but all the sports that he's coached, he's one of the best coaches in multiple sports.

"I think if he had concentrated on basketball he might have 1,000 wins."

Martinez was credited with more than 1,100 wins in football, softball and women's basketball at San Mateo until his retirement in 2005. During a five-year span in the mid-1980s, he coached all three sports simultaneously.

Martinez entered the season as California Community College women's basketball's all-time winningest coach. He was passed in January by Karen Welliver, who is 572-287 in 27 years at Cerritos.

Mircetic began the year in the fifth position, but moved past Colleen Riley, who won 559 games in 25 years at Fullerton, and Caren Franci, who was 560-316 in 33 years at Santa Rosa JC.

In 24 years at Ventura College, Ned Mircetic has been a part of 24 Western State Conference basketball teams, five as men's basketball assistant from 1986 to 1990 and 19 as women's basketball head coach from 1991 to present.

If the Ventura College men's basketball team defeats Hancock Saturday night at the VC Athletic Event Center, Mircetic will have been a part of 25 WSC title-winning teams in 24 years.

The 73-32 win over Oxnard Wednesday night was win No. 560 for head coach Ned Mircetic in 19 seasons at the helm of the Ventura College women's basketball team.

That moves Mircetic past Colleen Riley, who won 559 games in 25 years at Fullerton, and into a third-place tie with Caren Franci, who was 560-316 in 33 years at Santa Rosa JC.

If the Pirates win three more games and reach the Great Eight, Mircetic will draw even with Tom Martinez, who was 563-103 in 21 years at College of San Mateo.

Martinez entered the season as California Community College women's basketball's all-time winningest coach. He was passed last month by Karen Welliver, who is 571-286 in 27 years at Cerritos.

The Ventura College women's basketball clinched its ninth 30-win season Wednesday night at Oxnard, when the No. 1 Pirates improved to 30-0.

The program broke the 30-win barrier for eight straight years from 1995-95 to 2002-03. Five of those seasons included 30 wins in the regular season.

Ventura was 29-6 last season.
