The Star's prep columnist Derry Eads explains this week's picks today on KVTA 1520 AM Ventura and Homefieldsports.com:
Tyler Ebell, who set a single-season national rushing record as well as county and state scoring records, will have his No. 2 jersey retired during halftime of Ventura High's home game against St. Bonaventure on Oct. 24 at Larrabee Stadium
After graduating from Ventura, Ebell played college football at UCLA and UTEP. He is on the roster of Toronto of the Canadian Football League.
The decision by individual Marmonte League schools to seek to leave the Northern Area for the Foothill Area for the 2010-14 releaguing cycle comes with a gamble and possible twists of fate.
If approved by Northern and Foothill area schools, the Marmonte athletic programs would achieve a common goal: The security of remaining an eight-team league for another four years, at least.
The departure would not affect current playoff alignments in any sport.
The danger of the Marmonte League's action: That only one or two schools will be granted the access to leave, thus opening the door for Northern area athletic officials to attach Oaks Christian in the vacant spot.
Westlake High senior Brandon Hagy was named today as a
Hewlett Packard Scholastic Junior All-American by the American Junior Golf Association and HP.
Hagy,
17, maintains a 3.9744 grade point average and is ranked 15th out of
616 in his class. He scored a 1950 out of 2400 on his SAT.
Hagy

of Ventura County, and Planet Hope, an organization that supports
homeless women.
He placed eighth at the TEE UP Junior Challenge where he finished eighth out of 102 boys.
Hagy
will be honored at the Rolex Junior All-America banquet Nov. 23 at
The Grande Ballroom at Ginn Reunion Resort in Reunion, Fla. He is
eligible to participate in the Polo Golf Junior Classic Nov. 22-28 at
Ginn Reunion Resort.
The Pacifica secondary should be seeing a lot of bodies coming their
way in Friday's non-league football game against Santa Barbara.
Santa
Barbara quarterback John Uribe completed 28 of 38 passes for 574 yards
and 7 TDs in last week's 51-21 win over San Luis Obispo. In four games,
Uribe is averaging 358 yards passing.
Pacifica (3-1) is looking to rebound from its first loss of the season last week against Buena, 12-0.
After two tough years in the Tri-Valley League, Grace Brethren and
Nordhoff have become Division IV-A girls' volleyball powers this fall
as members of the Frontier League.
Grace
Brethren and Nordhoff are ranked No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, in this
week's CIF-Southern Section Division IV-A poll, which was released on
Monday. Fellow Frontier League school Villanova is ranked No. 10.
Los Angeles Baptist used three long plays, including a 28-yard TD pass
on fourth-and-5, to defeat visiting Santa Paula, 21-14, Saturday
afternoon.
Max
Moreno completed 14 of 22 passes for 137 yards, rushed for 57 and
scored on a 1-yard run for Santa Paula. Backup running back Anthony
Murillo scored on a 12-yard run.
Santa
Paula may have lost starting running back Brian Aguayo for the season.
Aguayo was helped off the field on the first series of the game after
reportedly sustaining a broken tibula.
The Oct. 31 Tri-Valley League football game between host Oak Park and
Oaks Christian has been moved to Agoura High, announced the Oak Park
athletic department.
Oak Park and Oaks Christian are defending Tri-Valley League co-champions. The game is expected to draw a large crowd.
Oaks Christian, 4-0, has won five straight section titles and is ranked No. 1 in the Northwest Division.
St. Bonaventure jumped two places in the weekly CalHiSports.com state ranking to No. 5.
The Seraphs were rewarded for their decisive 31-14 win over previous No. 5 Crespi (which dropped to No. 15).
St. Bonaventure has a bye this week as it prepares for an Oct. 10 road game against No. 1-ranked Long Beach Poly in the first game between the two schools.

The Agoura High football program has one of the highest scoring offenses in the area.
Behind quarterback Patrick Arias and running back Lucky Radley, the Chargers are averaging 34.3 points per game heading into Friday's Marmonte League home opener against Westlake.
Points don't come quickly out of the gate for Agoura, which has scored only 7 first quarter points in three games. Watch out for the second 12-minute period, however. Agoura has scored 48 points in second quarters.

By virtue of impressive wins over Foothill League programs Valencia and
Canyon, Thousand Oaks has moved up to second in The Star's weekly
football rankings. See how last Friday's games affected the rest of the
rankings in Monday's paper
Carl Thompson, the winningest football coach in Camarillo history, will
be honored at next Friday's home game against Ventura. Thompson guided
the Scorpions to section championships in 1984 and 1996. Thompson's
teams won 109 games in 18 seasons.
For the first time in school history, Pacifica has opened the football
season with a 3-0 record. The fast start has put the Tritons on pace to
the program's first winning season. Next up for Pacifica is Buena on
Friday night. Buena won last year's game 14-6.
Buena boosters, don't bemoan. Just because the Bulldogs are 1-2 is no
reason to dispair. Look how Buena has battled two of the county's best
teams - Thousand Oaks and Oxnard - in consecutive weeks. If Buena had
won its games against weaker opponents, it would have not been better
off than raising the level of the program by keeping up with two very
good veteran teams.
When Fillmore scored 41 points against Village Christian and 42 against
Bishop Diego over the last two weeks, it marked the first time
since 1958 that a Flashes team had scored 40 or more points in
consecutive games.
Fifty years ago, Fillmore beat Carpinteria, 59-6, and Lompoc, 53-6, in back-to-back games.

Friday night's football game between St. Bonaventure and Crespi isn't
just a matchup of two top 10 state-ranked teams. It can have distinct
postseason implications.
There will be five state championship games, an increase of two over the last two years. The focus will be the open division, which will pair the best team from the North against the best team from the South. It allows a smaller school like defending Division III state champion St. Bonaventure a chance to be selected by a committee to the upper tiered game.
Not only must St. Bonaventure win a CIF title to be considered, it must do well in the non-league games. How well St. Bonaventure does against Crespi and nationally ranked Long Beach Poly in two weeks will weigh heavy for St. Bonaventure, should it win the Northern Division title.
