Simply perfect

It's not often that you find a player perfect at the plate four games into the season.

Grace Brethren School softball player  Danielle Fletcher is just that.

Fletcher has 13 hits in 13 official plate appearances this season. She has also walked three times.

Fletcher has an incredible slugging percentage of 2.462. Along with six singles, Fletcher has six home runs and one double.

Oh, Fletcher is perfect in the field, too, handling all six of her fielding opportunities

Fillmore, Grace Brethren go wild

The Fillmore and Grace Brethren football teams could crank up some high offensive numbers in Friday night's game at Moorpark College.

In its 41-34 win over Santa Paula last week, Fillmore had the ball for 85 plays and gained 508 yards. Quarterback Corey Cole had one of the best nights passing in Fillmore history, completing 18 of 34 passes for 238 yards and 2 TDs. Cole also scored twice as he rushed for 87 yards.

Grace Brethren had a school record 679 yards in total offense in its win over Malibu.
Quarterback Max Leffler was 18 of 36 passing for 457 yards and 4 TDs. Jack Gilliland had 6 catches for 176 yards and 3 TDs, while running back Patrick Schafer rushed for 144 yards and 2 scores.

Valentino commits to play softball at UNLV

Agoura High senior Stefany Valentino has verbally committed to play softball at UNLV. The 5-foot-4 Valentino batted .329 with 28 hits, five doubles, five home runs, 11 RBIs and 20 runs scored last season for Agoura. The all-Marmonte League first-team selection had a slugging percentage of .588 and stole six bases in eight attempts.
Valentino, who plays for the So Cal Pumas travel team, is the third Agoura player to make a verbal commitment this year. Shannon Kaufman plans to attend Sacramento State and Julie Lewis plans to attend Colorado State.

In other softball news, Oaks Christian School pitcher Kiana Quolas was selected the national high school Player of the Year by the National Christian School Athletic Association.
Quolas, a junior, had a 15-3 record with a 0.80 ERA and 181 strikeouts in 130 2/3 innings as a sophomore and was named Tri-Valley League MVP. She also hit .459 with five home runs and 29 RBIs. Oaks Christian catcher Savannah Carpenter and Grace Brethren's Kassy Dunn and Danielle Fletcher were named to the All-Far West roster.

Grace Brethren's passing circus

Grace Brethren quarterback Max Leffler has the third-best passing performance in Ventura County history.

In Friday's 41-32 non-league football loss to Frazier Mountain, Leffler completed 17 of 45 passes for 510 yards and four TDs.

The 510 yards ranks behind the county record of 529 by Simi Valley's Robbie Fierro in 2004 and the 524 by Rudy Carpenter of Newbury Park against Agoura in 2002.

Leffler's favorite targets were Jack Gilliland, who caught 8 passes for 260 yards (sixth-best in county history) and Patrick Schafer, who had five catches for 146 yards.

Spacious home

Grace Brethren may not look like it draws very well for home football games in Moorpark College's spacious stadium.

Crowds average between 500 to 1,500, said Grace Brethren football coach Terry Gourley.

Compared to the school's enrollment, the number is significant.

"We can average five times more than the number of students on campus," said Gourley. Grace  Brethren's student body is around 220, he said.

Through ticket and snack bar sales, Grace Brethren is able to cover its costs for staging a game at Moorpark College. At times, the school makes a profit.

"It has become a perfect venue for us," said Gourley.

Frontier League tie

Santa Paula, Grace Brethren and Nordhoff finished the Frontier League baseball season tied for first place with 6-2 records.

Nordhoff's 17-6 win over Grace Brethren last Thursday created the deadlock. Santa Paula was idle this week.

The three teams split their regular-season series with each other.

Schmidt sets county record

Grace Brethren School pitcher/first baseman Nick Schmidt has set a Ventura County baseball record for career doubles.
With three doubles in last week's Frontier League two-game series with Villanova Prep, Schmidt increased his career total to 40, passing the record of 38 held by Brandon Mascorro of St. Bonaventure High from 2000-02.
Schmidt's last nine hits over the last four games (9 of 17) have gone for doubles.
He leads Ventura County hitters for the second straight season with 16 doubles. He had 15 in 2008.
Schmidt has a chance to distance himself in that statistical category.
He's only a junior.

Keiana Vines had 20 points as the Pacifica High girls basketball team (15-6) stayed perfect in Pacific View League play with a 47-26 win over visiting Camarillo Tuesday night.

Dajyanah Vines completed a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds as the Santa Clara High girls basketball team (16-3) improved to 5-0 in the Frontier League with a 77-27 win over Grace Brethren

Santa Paula pride

An hour before Santa Paula's game with Grace Brethren, Cardinal fans had already packed the stands in anticipation of Friday night's game. It's been a few years since Santa Paula has had a chance to win an outright league title and it's evident by the buzz in the stands that fans and students are eager to see if their team can accomplish that goal. Regardless of what happens tonight, fans are excited about seeing their team compete in this year's CIF-SS playoffs.

Don't count out Fillmore

With one game left on its regular-season schedule, the Fillmore High football program still has an outside shot of claiming a share of the Frontier League title.

Fillmore, 7-2 overall and 2-1 in the Frontier League, dropped a 34-14 decision to Santa Paula (6-2, 2-0 Frontier) last Friday night in the 98th meeting between the two schools.

Fillmore closes its regular season with a home game against Grace Brethren (3-5, 1-1) on Friday. A victory ensures Fillmore of a spot in the East-Valley Division playoffs. Fillmore could tie for the league title if Santa Paula loses to either Malibu or Grace Brethren in its final two games.

There is an outside chance for a three-way tie for second, should Fillmore lose to Grace Brethren

When 50 points aren't enough

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

Grace Brethren became the third area school to score 50 points in a football game and come out on the short end.

The Lancers opened their Frontier League season with a 51-50 loss to Malibu. It was a hectic fourth quarter as the two teams combined for 51 points, 30 by Grace Brethren.

The county record for most points in a loss is 55 by Newbury Park in a 58-55 slugfest -- the highest-scoring football game in Ventura County history -- with Royal in 2002.

Fifty-one points weren't enough for Agoura in a 54-51 loss to Westlake in 1996
