While Westlake's 3-0 season is one reason for head coach Jim Benkert to be happy, the smile the longtime coach has been carrying around for the first month of the season also has to do with the pleasure he is getting from coaching his current group of players. Benkert admitted after last Friday night's demolition of the Hart Indians that he's really enjoying the players he has on his 2009 roster. "They're a really fun group of players to coach," Benkert said. "I'm really enjoying being around them."
Benkert, one of the most sucessful coaches in county history, has his team off to a fast start. He said he's looking forward to getting the Marmonte League season underway this week and seeing how his team responds to the challenge.

Jim Benkert of Westlake High has become the winningest high school football coach in Ventura County history.

Westlake's dramatic 36-35 win over No. 3 seed Oxnard Friday in the Northern Division opening round presented Benkert with his 164th career victory - all at Westlake.

Benkert had been tied with former St. Bonaventure coach Jon Mack for first place on the career list with 163 wins for three weeks.

Mack, now the head coach at Ventura College, attended the game.

Westlake High football coach Jim Benkert is one win away from tying former St. Bonaventure coach Jon Mack for the Ventura County record for career football victories.

With Westlake's 50-21 win Friday night against Royal, the Warriors improved to 5-2 for the season and are tied for second in the Marmonte League with a 3-1 record.

In his 20th season, Benkert's teams have a 162-69-5 record. Mack compiled a 163-47-1 record in 17 years at St. Bonaventure before becoming the head coach at Ventura College.

Benkert was inducted into the Ventura County Sports Hall of Fame last year.
