Oaks Christian football coach Bill Redell's decision to continue coaching the Lions was helped by the decision to promote long-time offensive coordinator Mark Bates to assistant head coach and reduce some of Redell's on-field duties.
Redell, who has a 121-12-1 record at Oaks, was involved in a serious car accident before the 2008 season in which he suffered a broken back. He told the Oaks administrators that he would not continue coaching after the 2009 season partly because of the pain. But the staff reorganization has helped offset some concerns.
"I am very excited to lead our team into the Marmonte League and coach against an outstanding group of schools, several of whom are led by former coaches of mine," Redell said. "I think our league will be the top football league in the state and will provide the ultimate challenge for our program, coaches and students."
As part of his new role, Redell will help direct a campaign to raise $1 million to install synthetic turf at Oaks Christian's Thorson Stadium and re-surface the surrounding track.
