Oxnard and Pacifica aren't just playing for bragging rights tonight. The winner clinches a CIF playoff berth.

On the second play from scrimmage, Henry Fernandez raced 58 yards for a touchdown for a 7-0 Oxnard lead.

Pacifica evened the score at with 9:14 left in the first quarter on Jose Garcia's 3-yard run after the Tritons recovered a fumbled punt on the Oxnard 22-yard line.

But the Yellowjackets came right back with a 9-play scoring drive highlighted by Alex Gavin's 21-yard run and capped by Gavin's 4-yard touchdown run.

Following a Pacifica fumble, Tiai Salanoa rises for a highlight-reel 24-yard touchdown catch from Billy Ceja for a 21-7 Oxnard lead with 3:11 left in the first quarter.

UPDATE: Gavin breaks the 100-yard mark with a 45-yard touchdown run to put Oxnard up 42-13 with 3:05 left in the half. He has 136 yards on 13 att.
Hernandez returns an interception 42 yards for his fourth score of the first half to push Oxnard ahead 49-13 with 2:35 left in the half.

Oxnard pulled within 16-14 of visiting Hueneme as Henry Fernandez and Terrail Watson combined for a 7-play, 74-yard drive, Watson scoring on a 6-yard touchdown run with 9:51 to play.

Hueneme quarterback Jonathan Barnfather responded with a 9-plat, 53-yard touchdown drive. Penalties had backed Hueneme into a first and 30 situation, but, freed by a pass interference flag, the Vikings looked like salting away a key league win with Barnfather's 16-yard touchdown pass to Nick Fabian with 5:29 left.

But Fernandez's 43-yard touchdown romp pulled Oxnard within 23-21 with 4:20 to play.

Oxnard recovered the subsequent onsides kick, but Hueneme gained possession on an illegal touching flag. But Hueneme turned the ball over on downs after Fernandez made plays on third and fourth downs.

Hueneme scored first on Jonathan Barnfather's 39-yard scoring strike to Leonard Baker with 7:24 left in the first quarter.

But Oxnard senior Henry Fernandez pulled the Yellowjackets back even with an interception from his safety position, with a 29-yard run from his fullback position, which set up his 15-yard touchdown pass from Billy Ceja on third and 1.

The score is tied, 7-7, with 6:23 left in the first half at Oxnard High.

Oxnard's first regular-season loss in 23 games cost the Yellowjackets a place in the Northern Division rankings.

Oaks Christian 28, Skyline 25: The Lions took a big step toward a bowl berth by passing their toughest test of the season on the road in Washington. Oaks (3-0) jumped out to an early 14-0 lead, and managed to hold off a late Skyline charge. Malcolm Jones (19 carries, 133 yards) scored the game-winning touchdown on a 48-yard run in the fourth quarter, and Max Napolitano clinched the win with an interception in the waning seconds. Playing in the state he will soon reside full time, Oaks quarterback Nick Montana, a University of Washington commit, completed 21 of 32 passes for 258 yards and three touchdowns to hand Skyline QB Jake Heaps his first high school loss. But the most pressing question of the night might have been how many times ESPNU showed Joe Montana and his wife on the split screen. Can you say overkill?

Moorpark 31, Ventura 7: Moorpark (3-0) employed a single-QB offense with Brody Rohach taking all the snaps and Brian Blechen being used as a receiver and defensive back. Rohach passed for 177 yards and touchdowns of 50, 42 and 23 yards. Should we expect this to continue? Ever-coy Moorpark coach Tim Lins wasn't telling. Ventura (0-2) cut down on its turnovers, but its offense couldn't generate much against Moorpark's strong defense.

Channel Islands 28, Santa Clara 7: Raise your hand if you had Channel Islands and Hueneme both starting the season 3-0. Didn't think so. But CI used its passing attack to improve to 3-0 for the first time in 19 years. QB Bobby Diaz was 13 of 20 for 209 yards and one touchdown. Santa Clara committed four turnovers to fall to 0-2.

Nordhoff 14, Santa Ynez 12: Nordhoff held off the Santa Ynez comeback when Logan Crow intercepted a pass with 40 seconds remaining. The Rangers led 14-0 behind touchdowns from Cody Burgess (117 yards rushing) and Crow. Santa Ynez failed on a two-point conversion to tie the game on its second score with 7:38 to play. Nordhoff QB Skyler Logsdon was 10 of 20 for 133 yards.

St. Bonaventure 42, L.A. Jordan 21: Friday night lights was Friday afternoon sunlight for the Seraphs (3-0) as they played a day game. Senior QB Logan Meyer had his best statistical performance of the season, completing 18 for 25 for 312 yards and three touchdowns in just three quarters. Meyer started 7 for 7 for 187 yards and two touchdowns.

Fillmore 27, Bishop Diego 25:  The Flashes rallied for their first win when Zach Golson caught a pass from Corey Cole on 3rd-and 11 and sprinted 85 yards down the right sideline for the game-winning touchdown. Bishop Diego opened the game by scoring a touchdown on the very first play from scrimmage - a 72-yard scamper by Brandon Gonzalez - and led 13-0 at one point.

Oxnard 30, San Luis Obispo 14: That long bus ride was much more pleasurable thanks to those 20 points Oxnard scored in the fourth quarter to rally for the win. The Yellowjackets trailed 14-10 entering the final quarter, but Henry Fernandez ran for three touchdowns. Fernandez compiled 103 of his 166 yards rushing in the fourth quarter. Alex Gavin had 103 yards rushing.

Thacher 52, Cuyama Valley 6: QB Austin Krause threw for 143 yards and three touchdowns for the Toads in an eight-man road victory.   
  

St. Bonaventure and Oaks Christian are ranked No. 1 in the Northern and Northwest Divisions, respectively, in the CIF-Southern Section preseason football polls.

The Channel Islands and Pacifica High boys' soccer teams improved to 5-1 in Pacific View League play Tuesday afternoon.

Luis Hernandez scored twice, David Torres had a goal and an assist and Miguel Tellez had two assists as the Channel Islands (12-2-3) scored three second-half goals to avenge its only PVL loss of the season, 3-0, over visiting Rio Mesa (8-5-3, 2-4) Tuesday afternoon.

Rogelio Salinas and Raul Yepez scored first-half goals as Pacifica (15-4-1) eased by host Camarillo, 2-0.

Moises Orozco scored twice and Andres Negrette added another as Oxnard (6-3, 4-2) stayed a game back by scoring three times in the final 15 minutes with a 3-2 win over Hueneme, which led 2-0 midway through the second half.

Cameron Checky (152 pounds) beat Oscar Fino, 7-5; Johnny Henry beat his opponent, 5-3, in overtime; and Andrew Gonzalez (145) beat Cody Durazo, 10-1 as the Oxnard High wrestling team pinned down first place in the Pacific View League over Channel Islands, 37-29, Tuesday night.

Oxnard (37-29) improved to 4-0 in the PVL. Channel Islands (12-30) fell to 3-1 in the PVL, despite wins by Larry Lyons at 119 pounds and Victor Gamino at 135 pounds.

Omar Espinoza poked home a loose ball off a corner kick in the final minute as the Pacifica High boys soccer team improved to 2-0 in Pacific View League play with a 3-2 win over visiting Rio Mesa Tuesday afternoon.

A pair of Jerry Ponce 12th and 13th goals of the season had pushed the Spartans (7-2-3) within moments of surviving an opening gaunlet of Channel Islands (8-2-3) and Pacifica (12-3-1) undefeated.

Elsewhere in the PVL, Jose Nuno scored in the 67 th minute to push Channel Islands past Hueneme, 1-0, and goals by Ignacio Coronel and Moises Orozco led Oxnard over Camarillo 2-0.

The Buena Shootout for girls' basketball will be played at Ventura High on Saturday instead of at Buena High.

The Buena gym was booked for a dance before the Shootout was scheduled. But the game times for the triple-header remain the same.

Buena vs. Valencia, 4 p.m.

Oxnard vs. Canyon, 5:30 p.m.

Tickets are $5 for adults and $2 for students with an ASB card.

Jessica Fortner had a game-high 16 points, including the game-winning drive and layup with 10 seconds to play, as the Oxnard girls' basketball team climbed out of an eight-point hole after three quarters to beat St. Bonaventure, 48-46, Tuesday night.

Hailey Lezano had 11 points, Kelsey Botwinick had 10 points and Erica Whitley had eight points, six rebounds and six assists for 4-3 St. Bonaventure.
