Why No TV For The Big Game?

Everyone is wondering why Friday night's game between football powerhouses Long Beach Poly and St. Bonaventure is not being televised.

It's because Long Beach Poly wants it that way.

Fox Sports asked the CIF-Southern Section if it could televise the game for its "Game of the Week," but Long Beach Poly declined.

Whenever the CIF-SS gets a request to televise a game of one of its member schools, it leaves the decision up to the host school.

CIF-SS spokesperson Thom Simmons said two concerns expressed by Poly were losing out on gate receipts and the length of the game with prolonged TV timeouts.

Televised games make some people stay home instead of spending their discretionary income on gas and tickets, especially in these turbulent economic times.

St. Bonaventure coach Todd Therrien said last night at practice that Poly and St. Bonaventure are splitting the gate receipts from Friday's game.

So Ventura County fans will have to fight the Friday traffic and buy a ticket if they want to watch.

Or else they can stay home and watch Diamond Ranch at Bishop Amat in FSN's "Game of the Week."

The Calabasas High girls' tennis team finally lost a Marmonte League match.

The Coyotes had their Marmonte-winning streak snapped at 86 matches on Thursday by losing to Thousand Oaks 77-67 in games after the teams tied 9-9 in sets.

Calabasas (2-3, 2-1) hadn't lost a match since entering the Marmonte League in 2002.

Thousand Oaks (3-3, 3-1) used the strength of its doubles to beat the Coyotes. The Lancers won six doubles matches, led by a sweep from Hilary Koenig and Kathryn Stueckle.

Calabasas is still playing without its top singles player Sabrina Man-Son-Hing, who is dealing with a family illness.

New Home For State Track Meet

The CIF State Track and Field Championships will be held at Buchanan High School in Clovis for the next three years.

Rio Mesa High athletic director Brian FitzGerald spent the last two days in Oakland at the CIF Executive Committee Board meeting and said a three-year contract was completed.

Beginning with the 2009 meet, the state championships will be held at Veterans Memorial Stadium on the campus of Buchanan High.

It's first time since 1973 that the state championships will be held at a high school campus. The two-day meet has alternated between Cerritos College in Norwalk and Sacramento City College.

"For us, it's a closer trip and we won't have to fly when we travel up that way," FitzGerald said. "It will save us a little money. Plus, I like the idea of having it at a high school facility."

FitzGerald's trip to Oakland came during the Raiders coaching circus, which resulted in owner Al Davis firing head coach Lane Kiffin. FitzGerald could see the Raiders complex across the street from his meetings, but he didn't drop by the press conference.

"I don't even know who they got to replace him," FitzGerald said.

It's Tom Cable.

Ramos, Gremaud Hit Tandem

St. Bonaventure senior safety Xavier Ramos and junior linebacker PJ Gremaud literally set the tone for a dominant defense performance by the Seraphs in their 31-14 victory over Crespi last Friday night.

The hits leveled by the duo sounded like head-on collisions. Ramos speared Crespi's Mikio Island at the 20-yard line in the first quarter and knocked the wide receiver back a few feet.

As sideline spectators were left wide-eyed and shaking their heads, Island was still bending over when he returned to the huddle. Gremaud soon joined the fray with some equally jolting face-to-face hits.

Bonny's defenders bounced onto the field before every new possession howling and screaming.

The entire team was yelling "Come on Beach" after the game in reference to next week's showdown with Long Beach Poly - ranked No. 4 in the nation by USA Today and No. 1 by MaxPreps.com.

- On another Bonny note, lineman Daniel Saipale said he expected to be back practicing today. The sophomore injured his right hand while punching a goalpost in anger. He still had a big bump and scar on his hand Friday night, but didn't have a caste anymore.

Former Newbury Park High baseball coach Scott Drootin was hired last Friday to coach at Golden Valley.

Drootin will have a massive rebuilding project on his hands. Golden Valley finished 3-21 last season, including 0-14 in the Foothill League.

Drootin spent the last five seasons at Newbury Park, but was not re-hired. The Panthers recently replaced Drootin with Chuck Berrington.

Bonny's Birdie Answers Call

Patrick Hall might want to petition the police academy to give Jashaun McCowan some more time off from studying.

It seems whenever his cousin is on the sideline, the St. Bonaventure High senior has a big game.

Hall's good luck charm worked again on Friday night as he broke off touchdown runs of 53 and 82 yards and intercepted a pass to help St. Bonaventure defeat Crespi 31-14 at Larrabee Stadium.

"When he is not here watching me it is hard for me to play hard because I really don't have nobody to play for," Hall said. "When he is out here talking to me and making sure I don't pout and stuff it really helps me out."

Family illness sidelines Man-Son-Hing

The Calabasas High girls' tennis team has been playing without top singles player Sabrina Man-Son-Hing the last couple of matches.

The senior's mother has been hospitalized with an illness, according to Calabasas head coach Cleo Harper.

"As I understand, her mother is recovering. But when that happens to a parent that really puts a strain on a player," Harper said. "I pretty much told her she needs to take that time and go right ahead and the team will support her."

Man-Son-Hing's absence has changed the dynamics of the Calabasas lineup, but the Coyotes are adjusting well.

"They are holding their own," Harper said. "It's just a matter of us getting the team to get a little more strong in our doubles play. Once we do that, I think we should be on par again as to where we were in the past. Right now, it's a learning curve we are going through."
