With a roster filled with young players, La Reina girls' tennis coach Bowie Hahn knew his team might experience some "growing pains," early this season. Sure enough, the Regents lost four of their first five non-league matches.
But the losses gave the youngsters valuable experience and since league began, the Regents have been red hot.
On Thursday, La Reina (4-0) defeated Malibu 11-7 to take sole possession of first place in the Tri-Valley League. One of the key performances was turned in by the double team of Gaby Stevens and Niki Anaya who swept their sets. Stevens is a freshman and Anaya is in her first season as a varsity player.

Scott Arellano caught a 23-yard touchdown pass from Tony Macarena in the fourth quarter of Oaks Christian's 54-0 win over rival Oak Park Friday at Agoura High.

But Arellano, the Lions' punter, accomplished something else strange for a punter Friday night. He blocked a punt.

La Reina squad shaping up

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

La Reina girls' golf coach Bob Sisco is pleased with the way his team is rounding into shape this season. While they don't have a superstar as they have in year's past, the Regents have solid starters from top to bottom.

In their win over Oaks Christian, La Reina posted a team score of 215, and all six players scoring under 50. Christina Sinner was low with a 41, while Brenna Calleros, Makenna Cox and Kate Jacobsen all finished at 43.

La Reina will get a great gauge of where they are on Wendesday, when they meet Westlake,  the county's No. 1 ranked team, in a match at Los Robles.

Santa Clara's Cierre Wood and St. Bonaventure's Patrick Hall will compete for the West in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in January.

Here is Scott Hadley's Thursday story on the game and its role on Army recruiting.

The stars follow in the footsteps of local players like Lorenzo Booker, Whitney Lewis, Terrail Lambert, Jimmy Clausen and others.

Hopefully they will remember to break the plane of the goal line in the game, unlike DeSean Jackson:
