CIF certifies girls' state tournament

For state girls' wrestling power Pacifica High, the 2010-11 season offers a new stage.

The CIF state office has approved a Girls' Wrestling State Invitational for Feb. 25-26 at Lemoore High, located near Hanford.

The 2010 Southern and Northern Regionals combined to draw 704 athletes, representing 173 schools.

Pacifica finished in the top two at the Southern Regional and unofficial state tournament last winter.

With its second straight CIF Southern California regional girls' wrestling title, you can be sure that Pacifica can't wait until its next challenge.

Pacifica won the 2010 title last Saturday at Northview High in Covina by one point over arch rival Pioneer Valley.

Pacifica did not have an individual champion, but had placers in nine weight divisions.

There has been talk about the CIF holding a girls' wrestling state championship next year. It will be one of the proposals state officials will consider this spring.

If it does pass, Pacifica will be in good position to make a run at the state title. Six of its nine regional placers will be returning next fall.
