Bowling named state's top freshman

Royal High pitcher Nancy Bowling was selected as the freshman softball player of the year by CalHiSports.com.

Bowling struck out 301 batters in 180 1/3 innings and recorded 12 shutouts and 24 complete games. She was 15-11.

The freshman also led Royal in hitting, averaging .343.

CIF-SS Division I playoffs, first round

Thousand Oaks 5, Saugus 0: Alysha Payne went 2 for 2 with a run scored and two RBIs for the Lancers (24-5). Torey Best had a single and two runs scored. Taylor Yameck threw a two-hitter with two strikeouts behind a strong defensive performance.

Los Alamitos 5, Simi Valley 0: The Pioneers (19-9) came out flat in a well-played game by Los Alamitos.

Pacifica 4, Marina 2: Julie Cortez drove in the first run in the first inning with a double. Cynthia Gomez had the second RBI, also in the first inning by a squeeze play. Gomez also finished with a double. Shayna Kimbrough and Tatiana Alcala each had two hits for the Tritons (16-9).

CIF-SS Division III playoffs, first round

Oak Park 2, Burroughs 0: Emily Dinino went 2 for 3. Christie Langlois had an RBI single in the first inning to score Katheryn Klamecki. Brett Hall scored Dana Dechene with an RBI single in the second inning. Julia Rice threw a three-hitter with 12 strikeouts for the Eagles (17-10).

Oaks Christian 11, Flintridge Sacred Heart 0:
Katie Elliott was 4 for 4 with three RBI, Ava Jensen was 3 for 4 with two RBIs and Kiana Quolas went 2 for 4 wth two RBIs and a home run for the Lions (25-4-1). She also had eight strikeouts in improving her record to 14-2. Nicole Leonard went 2 for 4. The Tologs (19-6) lost their ace pitcher Jessica Ferri, who is committed to Harvard, in the first inning on a sliding accident before she was even able to throw a pitch.

St. Bonaventure 1, Righetti 0:
Ashley Frutos went 2 for 4 with a double for the Seraphs (15-8). Marissa Reyes had a hit, while also pitching a three-hitter with eight strikeouts.

CIF-SS Division IV playoffs, first round

St. Joseph 11, Ventura 1:
Courtnie Snyder went 2 for 3 with a double for the Cougars (13-14). Becca Bernard had a double and a walk. Alyssa Ayala had a run scored as a pinch runner for Alexis Purifoy, who walked in the sixth.

CIF-SS Division VI playoffs, first round

Grace Brethren 12, Santa Clarita Christian 2:
Kassy Dunn went 4 for 4 with three RBIs and had four stolen bases. She also threw a three-hitter with 14 strikeouts for the Lancers (12-6). Brianne Lundgren went 3 for 5 with three RBIs.

Nordhoff 5, Providence 0:
Alex Thorp threw a shutout and also had two doubles for the Rangers (10-14). Sammy Burdick also had a double.

CIF-SS Division VII playoffs, first round

Cornerstone Christian 15, Valley Christian 14:  Victoria Dempster went 3 for 4 with a triple, two doubles, three runs scored and four RBIs. Olivia Graham went 3 for 5 with two doubles and three runs scored.
