Capps' opponent reacts to her "rare moment of political candor"

Earlier I wrote about Rep. Lois Capps' surprising caught-on-tape admission that Obamacare isn't all that it's cracked up to be. Last year, the former nurse-turned-politician enthusiastically supported it, telling town hall audiences that support for it can be found in the Constitution.

Now, she's whistling a different tune, calling it a "big gamble." I wonder what changed?

Her Republican challenger in the 23rd Congressional District, former Top-Gun pilot Tom Watson, told me that her "rare moment of political candor" was "pretty shocking."

"This bill is doing the exact opposite of what they told us it was going to do," Watson said. "We had a cost problem, and they have just made it worse. It is causing rates to increase dramatically."

He said his company's premiums increased by 30 percent this year.

"Bottom line on this new law is we are all going to pay more and get less," Watson added. [continue reading]

Rep. Lois Capps wants to boost enrollment in school lunch programs. Ironically, we might just all end up on food stamps thanks to misguided Democratic economic policy on the recession, which Capps says is "lingering" (wasn't this Recovery Summer?).

Concerned over a possible rollback in food stamp benefits, advocates and dignitaries gathered Thursday to urge that nutrition programs be protected.

"Everybody now has been pushed so hard by the recession that just keeps lingering," Rep. Lois Capps, D-Santa Barbara, told the group of 50 people meeting at FOOD Share, the county's regional food bank in Oxnard. "We have to give everyone the confidence that the basics can be there."

One key issue is legislation authorizing a variety of early childhood and school nutrition programs.

 Ahem, "dignitaries" might be going a little too far, if it refers to this person.

In her remarks Thursday, Capps applauded the goals of the House nutrition bill, saying it would boost enrollment in school lunch programs, plus improve food quality and safety.

So Capps is in Oxnard saying we need more people on school lunch programs. Now that reminds me of something...

Oh yes, I just remembered! The Star just reported that Oxnard fraudulently billed the state for millions dollars worth of school lunches it never served!

Incident with angry Congressman overblown

In the 18 months since the Tea Parties rose up against the elite and unresponsive political class, we've seen a string of viral videos catching their representatives on tape demonstrating their arrogance. We've seen an out-of-touch Arlen Specter, a clueless and apathetic Phil Hare, a pushy Bob Etheridge, a condescending Pete Stark, and a confused Lois Capps.

The latest video to make the national circuit does not deserve to be included in that Wall of Shame.


Democratic Congressman Ciro Rodriguez from Texas took questions from constituents, at what appears to be a restaurant.

"Ma'am, don't accuse me of not saying the truth," the congressman demands, taking a few steps toward his accuser.

Someone nearby says something off-camera about his behavior not being appropriate. That seems to make Rodriguez even angrier. He slaps the table with papers in his hand, then quickly steps back. Not exactly menacing behavior, but not a picture of self-control, either.

It's not behavior you usually see from an elder statesman, but it's not something that puts Rodriguez in the same class of arrogance, as say, Pete Stark. While Stark deserves every minute of national attention he got with his unbelievable behavior, Rodriguez getting flustered at being called a liar is barely worth criticizing at most. I'm even inclined to understand his behavior--how many of us would stand being called a liar to our face?

Let's reserve our indignation for the elected officials that really deserve it.

Three local groups unite to sponsor Congressional debate next week

The Ventura County Republican Party, the Ventura County Tea Party, and the Ventura County Young Republicans will sponsor a debate for the five Republican Congressional candidates running in the 23rd District. The winner of next month's primary will take on incumbent Lois Capps.

Capps, in defending Obamacare, infamously said that the Constitution guarantees "health, liberty and happiness."

I think it's fantastic that different groups are coming to work together toward a common goal, and I'm proud to be the moderator. Each of the aforementioned groups brings a unique advantage to the table.

The GOP brings organization, money, and experience in defeating the Progressives. The Tea Party brings energy, enthusiasm, and populism. The Young Republicans bring the leaders of tomorrow.

Bustin' Capps: Congresswoman says Constitution guarantees "health, liberty and happiness" at town hall

You could tell by the panicked look on Congresswoman Lois Capps face that she had no idea how to answer the question, "Is government-run healthcare in the Constitution" when trying to sell universal healthcare to a town hall in Oxnard, Calif. tonight.

She recovered quickly and gave a rambling answer that didn't quite address the question, which is what we've come to expect from politicians. She should have left it at that, but she kept talking.

"It says in the Constitution that there is a right to health, liberty, and happiness," the congresswoman said. Just to show us that this wasn't a slip of the tongue, she was kind enough to reiterate it.

Ouch.

Judging by the immediate reaction of the audience, a full house packed into an AME church, they knew what the congresswoman did not--that she misquoted the Declaration of Independence and then mistakenly referred to it as the Constitution. And Capps was the only person in the room that had taken oath to support and defend that document.

"She doesn't know the Constitution," said Mike Murphy, who was at the town hall. "How can you defend what you don't know?"

The Declaration of Independence reads: 

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

No mention of "health". We know she didn't read the healthcare bill, but now I'm wondering if she's even read the Constitution and/or Declaration of Independence.
