What to know about where to go this week

Wassup 805? Bill Locey here, neither in Studio 805 nor in Camarillo, but still gainfully employed by the Ventura County Star, at least for the next hour or two, kicking it at my house, multi-tasking, writing about rock 'n' roll, watching TCM with the sound off and petting my cat, Nope, who is on my lap and as usual, in the way and doing his fair share as part of the worldwide feline anti-literacy campaign.

If I had a faster car, a richer girlfriend or even one with a job, here's where's I'll be lurking in the back this week:

Alanis Morrissette

OK, tonight - Friday - the old days are still gone and the Devil Makes Three are still too big for Ventura - so you'll have to go to the House of Blues in Hollyweird to check out some raucous and rollus smartly done. Grace Potter and her long legs and hot band, the Nocturnals, will play some indie rock at the Wiltern Theatre and Alanis Morrissette will sing up a storm, and perhaps a few people won't be texting at phonehead nirvana which is Club Nokia, while up here in the 805 where we like it, funny guy Mike Birbiglia will share his take on love and missteps thereof with his one man show, "My Girlfriend's Boyfriend," which will be happening at the big cement thing by the freeway, the Civic Arts Plaza. How cool is Birbiglia? He's been all over the stage, on Comedy Central, on albums, in books and best of all - he was in "Girls" on HBO, which I love, despite the fact they charge me an arm and a leg. HBO better get the Pac-12 Network damn quick or before 9 November and the first Bruin basketball game or else they're gonna hear some real break-up noise. OK, still tonight - Friday night - it's a terrific pop rock double bill with the All American Rejects and Boys Like Girls at the venerable (that means old) Ventura Theatre. The Caravan of Thieves will play some raucous drinking music at Zoey's and Dona Oxford will be at Yolie's and bluegrass legend, Peter Feldman, will be at the Lobero Theatre in SB, where the sound is always perfect and Mac's is just about a mile south.

Boys Like Girls

On Saturday - if you're weird and you want to drive to Hell-A on purpose - the All American Rejects and Boys Like Girls will do it again - this time at the Wiltern. Three Bad Jacks will tear it up at the Slitherin's favorite dive, the Viper Room in Hollywood - OK, here's three bad ones - the Ripper, Nicholson in "The Shining, and Daniels on Cheerios. And not far away, Yellowcard will be at House of Try To Find A Place To Park in Hollywood. Joan Osborne will sing some songs at the Valley Center for the Performing Arts in Northridge and Ventura local and Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Famer, Chris Hillman, will fire up the Desert Rose Band one more time for an acoustic show at the Civic Arts Plaza - a fundraiser for the Greek Orthodox Church. You remember the Greeks right? Before they were getting played by international big money loan sharks, once upon a time, they invented democracy - you should vote. While up here in the 805 where we like it, it's Steve White & The Barstool Pigeons at Blackbeard's BBQ down at the Ventura Harbor and the Brian Faith Band will be playing some classic rock at Amigo's down on Main Street in Ventura, while across the street, it's jam band nirvana with Shaky Feelin' at the Good Bar, while up the coast to Santa Barbara, it's a homegame CD release party for Spencer the Gardener at SOhO.

Nerf Herder

On Sunday - here's a cool indie rock double bill - Divine Fits and Cold Cave at the Fonda in Hollyweird - Electric Guest will be at the El Rey Theatre and the funniest band from Santa Barbara - Nerf Herder - will be at the Viper Room - it's worth the drive just to hear them play "Sorry" plus they do the theme for "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," so their fame is assured. While up here in the 805 where we still love it - and will continue to if Steve Bennett wins again and prevents the cement lovers from taking over the VC Board of Supervisors - anyway, it's Frank Barajas doing his one man pop rock thing at Tutti's in Ventura.

On Monday, it's one of the geezers of rock - Leonard Cohen - he's got a few songs to share at the Nokia Theatre in El Lay.

OK, now let's skip a few to the best Thursday of the year - too bad they're all in L.A. - but check this out; Cat Power will be at the Hollywood Palladium and there's never enough cats. Titus Andronicus has a new one, which totally rocks (if you can believe the review below) - they'll be at the El Rey and there's great garage band rock from the Japandroids at the Fonda and one of the great LA bands of the '90s, not to mention ever - that would be Dramarama at the Key Club - might have to go down there to see this one - it would be worth the drive to get "Stuck in WonderamaLand" one more time. And finally on a Thursday, up here in farmland-hating Oxnard, where the cement heads on the city council need a new day job - it's guitar goddess Teresa Russell at the Lookout.

He is the tall guy lurking in the back of all the local rock shows.
