Matt Hornbuckle shook off a rough weekend to score five of his team-high 17 points to guide the Moorpark College men's basketball team to a 96-95 win over MiraCosta College Sunday afternoon in the consolation championship of the Ranch Vista Shootout at Antelope Valley College in Lancaster.
The Oaks Christian School product hit a game-tying 3-pointer with a minute to play and, off a Silvio Arie-Lisboa pass, made a layup with 1.1 seconds to play that put the Raiders (8-2) ahead 96-93.
MiraCosta's CJ Harris caught a length-of-the-court pass, turned and hit an off-balance jumper as the buzzer sounded that the officials ruled a two pointer instead of sending the game into overtime.
"I thought he was a good two feet inside the line," said Moorpark coach Remy McCarthy. "I spoke to the kids after the game how, given that situation, we might dribble the clock out next time."
The Raiders, ranked No. 19 in the state coaches' poll, improved to 8-2 by stroking nine 3-pointers.
Hornbuckle had 17 points on 7 of 11 shooting. Dwight Jones scored 15 points, Mike Rodgers scored 15 points and B.J. Wortham scored 13 points.
MiraCosta (5-7) was led by 27 points from Chris Raybon, 26 points from Harris and 24 points from Daniel Phair.
Rodgers and Raybon were named All-Tournament.
