Will Cowen's acceptance of the vacant Ventura College athletic director position has a domino affect on the potential full-time men's basketball hire this summer.

The former Pacifica High girls' basketball coach, who spent years working at Pete Newell's renowned big-man camp, Cowen had built himself into a leading candidate by helping the Pirates to a 20-7 record and a Top 20 ranking in the state coaches' poll as an assistant coach this season.

Cowen said he left his future role in the hands of Ventura president Robin Calote.

"Essentially, here's what I told the president," said Cowen. "I will do whatever she feels will service the college in the best way.

"I was real open with her and I told her that from Day 1."

Former VC coach Phil Mathews and current VC assistant Jon Wyers are two potential candidates with both connections to the school and interest in the job.

Ventura College women's basketball coach Ned Mircetic, currently the temporary men's head coach, has repeatedly said he isn't willing to leave the women's program to become the full-time men's coach.

Harry you should be very proud of your son. I have never heard a negative thing about Jon Wyers. He comes to practice and games ready to work. Is always prepared. I think he would be an excellent choice for the Head Coach position. And yes my 4 year old son hopes to play basketball some day at VC. Thats what he always talks about. We have to get him through the rec league first I guess though.

Matt,
Thanks for the kind words.

Looks to me we'll have a fine guard in 14 or 15 years.

I feel that Coach Wyers is the man for the job. All of the players really seem to respect him.He is always prepared and brings a wealth of knowledge and leadership to the team. I feel that he provides stability to a program that is getting back on track. From what I have heard the players really like him as well.

Congrats Coach Cowen on a job well done.
