The Cal Lutheran University men's basketball team tried as long as possible to keep its season alive, but finally ran out of answers.
The Kingsmen lost to Pomona-Pitzer 74-71 in double overtime on Friday night in the semifinals of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament.
CLU (15-11) had its seven-game winning streak snapped while Pomona-Pitzer (14-12) advances to play Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the SCIAC Tournament championship game tonight.
Adam Chaimowitz hit the decisive three-pointer late in double overtime to provide Pomona-Pitzer with the deciding margin.
Kyle Knudsen went 6 for 8 from behind the three-point line and finished with 29 points to lead CLU. Aaron Fisher scored 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds and Greg Grimm had 15 points.
Justin Sexton led Pomona-Pitzer with 20 points and David Liss scored 13.
CLU started conference play 1-4, but rebounded to qualify for the tournament with a victory in its final regular-season game.

CLU Women Fall Just Short

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

The Cal Lutheran women's basketball team fell just short of advancing to the SCIAC Tournament championship, losing 63-61 to host Redlands last night in the SCIAC Tournament semifinals.

The young Regals trailed by two with four seconds remaining when a steal led to a desperation heave by CLU's Donielle Griggs that missed the rim.

Griggs had forced a 55-55 tie with a 3-pointer and a long jumper with just over two minutes remaining.

But Redlands' Mariah Barbetti-Cort, a Ventura High graduate, went strong to the hoop and converted a three-point play for the Bulldogs providing a lead they would not relinquish.

Freshman Starla Wright led CLU with 19 points and Erica Whitley had 12. Despite a roster consisting mostly of freshmen and sophmores, CLU finished the season 19-7, which included an upset of the defending Division III champion.

In the other semifinal, Occidental defeated Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 72-69 and will host Redlands on Saturday at 5 p.m. in the tournament final.

JCHoops.com's Moorpark men's qfinal preview

Here's a look at the Moorpark College men's basketball team's regional quarterfinal tonight at Los Angeles Pierce from the illustrious Dave Roghan of JCHoops.com, click the link for all his playoff previews:

No. 16 LA Pierce vs. No. 17 Moorpark

LA Pierce: Went 4-0 with wins over Barstow in December, El Camino and Oxnard in January and Ventura in February. This is the Brahmas' first playoff team since the program was brought back in 2002, and Coach Ed Babayan has built it from the ground up. It's an ensemble cast with lots of good players but no real superstars. PG Ever Lopez (13.0 pts, 5.0 rebs, 4.8 asts, 1.5 stls) is the team's heart and soul, a tough-guy overachiever, and onetime CSUN signee PF Terran Carter (10.7 pts, 5.3 rebs) is the marquee name though he's always been the ultimate role player rather than a feature guy. SF Daniel St. Hubert (9.8 pts, 6.0 rebs, 4.3 asts) is very athletic and fills the stat sheet, and PF Javael Boykins, once Carter's backup at Taft HS, really came on late (12.0 pts, 4.0 rebs in the last two games). SG Jeremy White (7.5 pts, 6.5 rebs), PF Malcolm Collins (12.0 pts, 5 total threes in the 1st two games), SG Bertrand Kamga (9 pts vs. Barstow), Ctr Michael Aguilar (8 pts vs. Barstow) and SG Ryan Rubino (8 pts, 2 threes vs. Ventura) all provide depth.

Moorpark: Lost to Riverside, 84-57, in December but beat Cuesta and Hancock in the WSC-North season. That illustrates the difference between the OEC and the WSC-North, of course, but that win vs. Cuesta was probably the highlight of the season for Moorpark. That day, Ctr Mike Meza (21 pts), SF Spencer Schulte (16 pts, 9 rebs) and PF Wendell Antoine (14 pts, 8 rebs) all had big days, and SG Dallas Rutherford (23 pts vs. RCC) couldn't hit a shot but found other ways to contribute (4 pts, 8 rebs, 6 asts, 3 stls). But Rutherford has since left the team, and Schulte barely played vs. AHC, apparently having fallen out of favor. PG Matt Mazarei had a career day vs. the Bulldogs with 40 points and 8 assists.

Bottom Line: As ridiculous as it is to have two conference foes face each other in this round, at least nobody will have to travel very far. The teams split their conference games this year, each winning on the road. With Rutherford gone and Schulte out of the rotation, Pierce rates an edge, though with such familiar rivals one never knows. It should be a festive atmosphere as Pierce plays in its first playoff game since the program was reinstated and hosts its first playoff game in the refurbished gym, and I'll be there to see it!

It took a clean sweep for the Cal Lutheran University men's basketball team to earn a place in the SCIAC tournament.

But that's what the Kingsmen completed Tuesday night at Gilbert Center.

Kyle Knudesen had 21 points, Greg Grimm had 19 points and Aaron Fisher had 16 points and 10 rebounds as CLU turned back Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 74-67, for its seventh straight win, all over different SCIAC foes.

CLU (15-10, 9-5 SCIAC) clinched third place with the win, earning a berth in Friday's conference semifinals at second-place Pomona-Pitzer (13-12, 9-5). The two teams have split two games this season.

Top-seed CMS will host fourth-seeded Occidental in the other semifinal.

Moorpark men earn playoff bid, travel to rival Pierce

Continuing a trend of conference rivals being drawn in first-round playoff games, the Moorpark College men's basketball team (16-10) earned the No. 17 seed in the Southern California regional playoffs Monday afternoon and will visit No. 16 Los Angeles Pierce Wednesday night in the quarterfinals.

"They don't protect the first round," said Moorpark coach Remy McCarthy. "We knew that going in.

"My only gripe is I know Pierce is a good team. I'd like to take my chances with some of the other (teams).

"But it'll be fun. Short drive. There will definitely be a lot of people fired up about it over there, that's for sure."

The Moorpark College men's and women's basketball teams both find themselves on the bubble today, when the pairings for the Southern California regional playoffs will be determined at coaches meetings this morning at Antelope Valley (men) and Santa Ana (women) colleges.

The Moorpark men (16-10) hurt themselves by losing three of their last four games to finish the season after a season-high six-game winning streak had the Raiders in the thick of the WSC North race.

The men, who made the field as the No. 20 and final seed a year ago, would have to be the third WSC North team in the field after finishing behind Cuesta and Los Angeles Pierce.

The Raiders have the 13th-best winning percentage (.615) and are No. 18 in RPI among SoCal teams.

"You get there by winning games," said Moorpark coach Remy McCarthy last week. "If you don't get in, you have no one to blame but yourself."

The Moorpark women (15-12), who were one slot away from making the women's 18-team field a year ago, are No. 20 in winning percentage (.556) and No. 19 in RPI among SoCal teams.

"Think positive for us," said coach Lindsay Goldblatt. "It's going to be a close one."

One coaches rough computation of the field over the weekend had Ventura at No. 2 and Moorpark and Oxnard out of the field at No. 21 and No. 25.

I will post the postseason field as soon as it becomes available today.

The Great Eight this season is being held next month in Thousand Oaks at Cal Lutheran University.

VC women stay top in final poll

The Ventura College women's basketball team will finish the season where it started, as the No. 1-ranked team in the region and state.

The Pirates completed a wire-to-wire run this week when the season's final polls were released. They have have that lofty position for 28th straight polls.

The Pirates took over the top spot on Dec. 1, 2008, one day after knocking off three-time state champion Mount San Antonio College in the final of the VC-Kiwanis Tournament of Champions.

They won the next 26 games before falling to Pasadena City in the state Final Four. After opening this season No. 1 in the state preseason poll, they have won 28 of 29 games, the only loss coming once again to Pasadena in the final of the Rose City Classic Dec. 12.

Santa Barbara City, the potential runner up to the Pirates in the WSC North, returned to the SoCal poll ranked No. 15.

More Congrats to coaches Perrault and Wyers

How about Jeff Perrault and Jon Wyers, who both took over varsity head coaching jobs this year and led their new teams to the CIF playoffs?

Wyers, an assistant coach at Ventura College over the previous two seasons, guided Villanova Prep to the Division 5-A playoffs, where the Wildcats drew Condor League powerhouse Besant Hill in Wednesday's first round.

Perrault, the Oxnard College assistant, spurred Newbury Park High to its first postseason bid since 2003. The Panthers will visit Arroyo Grande Wednesday in the Division III-AA first round.

Men's basketball: CLU 65, Pomona-Pitzer 62

CLAREMONT -- The Cal Lutheran men's basketball team is saving its best for last.
Aaron Fisher's 3-pointer with eight seconds left -- and just one second left on the shot clock -- gave CLU its second lead of the night, and that was enough to propel the Kingsmen to a 65-62 win at Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday night, moving the Kingsmen into a tie for the final spot in the SCIAC conference playoffs.
With its fourth straight win, CLU improves to 12-10, 6-5 in the SCIAC, tying Pomona (10-12, 6-5) for the final place in the four-team conference tournament.
"Their perseverance has paid off," said CLU coach Rich Rider. "We kept saying all year long -- even when we went through all of our speed bumps -- just persevere ... and it will slowly turn."
Fisher's winning shot -- a straightaway 3 from the top of the arc -- was just his second basket of the night and ninth 3-pointer this season.
"We ran a play for Kyle (Knudsen)," Fisher said. "Kyle wanted to take the shot; he's our best shooter."
But Pomona had Knudsen covered, so the shot fell to Fisher with the clock winding down.
"It was an option," said Rider, "but it was not the first option. ... He's a gamer. He's tough when he wants to be."
Pomona inbounded, and after three timeouts with four seconds left -- two by the Sagehens, one by the Kingsmen -- David Liss' corner 3-pointer to tie bounced off the rim as time expired.
More in Sunday's Star.

Women's basketball: CLU 66, Pomona-Pitzer 51

Cross-posted from the All Over The Place blog:

CLAREMONT -- The Cal Lutheran women's basketball team received an object lesson on the dangers of losing concentration Saturday evening.
Since the Regals still won, it came cheaply enough.
CLU led 14-0 and 19-3, but allowed Pomona-Pitzer to hang around, needing a late 12-0 run to secure a 66-51 and retain a share of second place in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
CLU is 18-5, 10-2 in the SCIAC with two games remaining. The Regals have already secured a place in the conference's four-team tournament, but kept alive their slim hopes of taking first and securing home-court advantage. Occidental is a game ahead of CLU, but since the Tigers swept the Regals, holds the advantage if the teams were to tie.
Pomona-Pitzer, which lost the earlier meeting 87-49, is 5-16, 1-11.
It was something of a trap game, with CLU coming off a loss in Thursday's first-place showdown at Occidental and facing the ninth-place team in the conference.
"The big challenge," said CLU coach Roy Dow, "was after that tough emotional game, how to come back 48 hours later, get back on the bus and go on another road trip. That's where we missed Kelsey Paopao (CLU's only senior, who has missed the season because of injury), an older kid that's been around. ... You could see it today."
The Regals overcame that challenge at the start -- holding Pomona-Pitzer scoreless for its first 11 possessions and almost eight minutes -- but after that, it was a struggle.
"I know a lot of us wanted to come out strong because obviously, we lost to Occidental," said Donielle Griggs, who led CLU with 23 points, "so we had it in us to take our anger out, I guess you could say, for the next game. But it was hard to stay focused."
Said Dow, "We did (respond) for 10 minutes. But ... teams aren't just going to roll over when you come to their gym the second time around."
With the help of Anja Hughes-Stinson's big game off the bench, Pomona trailed just 51-45 with 6:20 remaining before the Regals put together the 12-0 run that gave them an 18-point advantage with 3:15 left. That proved to be enough of a cushion.
"We stuck with it," said Griggs, who hit five 3-pointers. "Never give up. That's been our motto all year."
Starla Wright added 12 points and seven rebounds for CLU, and Brianna Parker grabbed 15 rebounds. Hughes-Stinson led Pomona with 23 points, including all four of her team's 3-point shots.
CLU did not practice Thursday -- which Dow considered a partial explanation for his team's occasionally sloppy play -- and will take two more days off before returning to practice Tuesday.
"It's that time of the season," he said. "We're freshmen and sophomores, and the bodies show it."

The Cuesta College men's basketball team took over sole possession over first place in the WSC North with a 96-72 win over visiting Oxnard Saturday night in San Luis Obispo.

Roger Guardia scored a game-high 34 points, including 29 points after halftime, for Cuesta (22-5, 8-1).

Oxnard led the game by 13 points in the first half and 37-32 at the half, but Condors star James Ennis was ejected in the second half.

"This was a strange game of blowout runs for both teams," Cuesta head coach Rusty Blair told the San Luis Obispo Tribune. "But we spurted ahead in the second half."

Beanpot Warrior

Congratulations to Thousand Oaks native and Westlake High graduate Max Nicastro, who made his debut in the Beanpot ice hockey tournament Monday night at the TD Garden in Boston.

Nicastro logged plenty of ice time as a defenseman for defending national champion Boston University, who defeated Northeastern 2-1 on a third period goal by fellow freshman Alex Chiasson.

Nicastro (No. 7) can be seen about to clear the puck in the front of goalie Kieran Milan in this Boston Globe photo.

Nicastro and the Terriers will face Boston College, 6-0 winners over Harvard, in Monday's Beanpot final. The two teams, who contest one of college hockey's noteable rivalries, have combined to win the past two national titles and faced off at Fenway Park last month, a week after the Bruins and Flyers played in the Winter Classic.

BU won 3-2 at Fenway Park (Nicastro was a plus 1) and 5-4 in overtime last week at BC's Conte Forum (Nicastro was a plus 2) in Hockey East play.

Nicastro is a draft pick of the Detroit Red Wings.

With wins over Oxnard and Hancock last week, the Ventura College women's basketball team maintained its No. 1 state and regional rankings for the 26th straight poll dating back to Dec. 2008.

The Pirates (24-1) have won 12 straight games and 67 of 68 regular season games since Jan. 5, 2008. They are 6-1 against the state Top 20.

They are 7-0 in the WSC North, leading Santa Barbara City (14-10, 6-1) by one game. The Vaqueros received votes for both polls but were not ranked.

Ventura beat No. 2 Fullerton (23-1), the only other team to earn first-place votes in both polls, 64-47 on Nov. 22. Pasadena City (19-3), which beat the Pirates 81-72 on Dec. 12, dropped to No. 4 after a bruising 69-46 loss to No. 3 Mount San Antonio (18-5) Saturday.
