Gomez makes U.S. World Cup squad

Oxnard's Herculez Gomez is going to South Africa.

The 28-year-old striker was among the 23 players unveiled as the U.S. national men's soccer team for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, which begins next month.

Gomez, who recently became the first American-born player to lead the Mexican league in goalscoring, continued his red hot form by scoring his first goal for his country Tuesday in a 4-2 friendly loss to the Czech Republic Tuesday in East Hartford, Conn.

"Players that are on a good roll come in handy," said U.S. coach Bob Bradley. "Herculez has been on a great run as far as scoring goals. Watching him every day, his movement, he works very hard, those are always things that go well for us."

It was his first appearance for the national team in nearly three years since the 2007 Copa America.

"It was a special moment," Gomez. "(Making the squad) would mean the world that's for sure. It's every soccer player's dream, to be standing where I'm standing. I'm aware of that and this has been special, especially with where I was nine months ago."

Gomez, who attended Lemonwood and Sierra Linda elementary schools in Oxnard, still remembers scoring 10 goals in one game as a young boy at La Colonia

His grandmother, Irene, and several cousins still live in Oxnard and have followed his every move around Major League Soccer and Mexico's Clausura championship.

"I still come up (to Oxnard) every chance I get," said Gomez last week.

Forward Herculez Gomez, who grew up in Oxnard, scored his first goal tonight for the U.S. men's national team against the Czech Republic in East Hartford, Conn.

The headed strike equalized the score, 2-2, midway through the second half. Gomez had come on at halftime alongside Brian Ching.

It's looking like the newly-signed Pachuca striker has a good chance to be named to the U.S. World Cup squad Wednesday by coach Bob Bradley.

"I said I had 29 players in front of me and my number today was number 30 so that pretty much put things in perspective for me," Gomez said to Fox Sports. "I just did my best and it's all out of my hands now.

"If anything, I'm just proud that I think I gave Bob a little headache now."

Bradley confirmed Gomez was in the discussion.

"Herculez played his way into the camp with his performances at Puebla," said Bradley. "It was based upon goals and in some cases coming on as a sub and scoring. You assess a lot of things and tonight I saw plays that for me need to be better but obviously he scored a goal which is very important in this whole thing.

"I started by talking about how players have a lot to be proud of and here's a guy who was totally out of the picture and played his way back in. He certainly will be discussed during our meetings tonight."

Fusion qualify for U.S. Open Cup

The Ventura County Fusion men's soccer team continues to break new ground.

The Fusion achieved one of its biggest goals of the new season late Saturday when it clinched the first U.S. Open Cup berth in franchise history when the Los Angeles Legends lost to the Ogden Outlaws.

The result means the defending Premier Development League champion will be the lone Southwest Division team entered into May 31 draw for the first round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, which will be played June 15.

"We've achieved a lot in our first three years of existence, particularly last season," said Fusion general manager Ranbir Shergill. "This year, we wanted to achieve something we haven't done yet.

"One of the big goals for this season was to get into the Open Cup and bring an MLS team to Ventura to play a game that really means something."

The Fusion could be drawn against MLS or United Soccer League opposition.

"It really depends on the luck of the draw," said Shergill.

Ventura County (4-0), which has scored 12 goals and conceded none in winning the first four matches of the PDL season, hosts the Fresno Fuego Sunday at 3 p.m. at Buena High.

Moorpark College's Kenneth Sugishita came in a distant second to first-place finisher Nate Moses of Fresno City College in Friday's discus competition at the California Community College championships at Antelope Valley College.

Moses unleashed a winning first throw of 192 feet, 11 inches. Sugishita had a long throw of 174-7.

Misko finishes fourth at state golf

Paul Misko left the Oak Valley Golf Club Monday feeling like he was one decision from winning the state championship.

The Ventura College sophomore shot a 3-under 141 over 36 holes to finished tied for third at the California Community College men's golf championships in Beaumont.

"I hit the ball really well," said Misko, who was tied for the lead after 18 and 35 holes and finished one shot behind champion Connor Covington. "I hit everything stiff. I made a lot of putts that were crucial."

"That's the only thing that makes me sad. I haven't hit the ball this good when I've won tournaments."

Having lost the card off for third place, Misko, who officially finished fourth, is VC's second straight All-State selection. Alton Anderson tied for the medal last year, before losing a card off for the title. The Top 6 finishers make up the All-State team.

The Royal High product was 4-under and tied for the tournament lead stepping into the 36th and final tee box. Setting up for his second shot, 237 yards from the pin, Misko reached for his 3 wood, rather than the hybrid that had served him so well all day.

"I knew I had adrenline," said Misko. "I knew I had to hit a shot."

The shot flew over the green, carrying nearly 260 yards, leaving him to chip back onto the green and two-putt for just his fifth bogey of the day.

"I could have hit a hybrid, made birdie and won the tournament," said Misko. "But I'm not really disappointed. It's a lesson learned."

Misko didn't bogey a hole until the par-4 15th in the morning. He finished the first round with a 2-under 70.

Misko credited Ventura coach Bob E. Smith for his good day.

"He talked me through every single shot, every single yardage," said Misko. "It took a lot of pressure off me. It was a tremedous."

Local community college athletes had a field day at the Southern California regional championships Saturday at Saddleback College in Mission Viejo.

Moorpark's Kenneth Sugishita won the men's discus, Moorpark's Josh McClure won the men's shot put, Moorpark's Jane Swenson won the hammer and Ventura's James Innis won the high jump.

The top six in each event qualified for the state championships next week at Antelope Valley College.

Sugishita won the discus (167 feet, 3 inches), took second in the shot put (52-0.5) and fourth in the hammer (169-0). McClure won the shot put with a throw of 53-4.5.

Gabe Acero took sixth (170-1) in the hammer. Andrew Durham took fifth (47-11.5) in the shot put and seventh (161-8) in the hammer.

Charlie Petrie finished second (9:23.63) in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Isidore Herrers placed fourth (15:20.6) in the 5,000 meters and third (31:38) in the 10,000 meters.

Swenson and Ventura's Cynthia Sanchez finished first (161-11) and second in the women's hammer, respectively. Sanchez's mark set a school record. Swenson also placed second in the shot put (43-11) and third in the discus (141-6). Sanchez was sixth (40-0.5) in the shot put.

Madelyn Stoltze placed second in the 5,000 (17:50.72) and fifth in the 10,000 (37:24). Shara Longbotham placed third in the high jump (5-3).

The Moorpark men finished fourth (65 points) as a team and the women finished seventh (42 points). Ventura was 18th (11 points) and 17th (13 points), respectively.

Silva and Whitfield combine again for the unbeaten Fusion

Thiago Silva and Brent Whitfield combined to score for the third straight game and Bryan Hill again kept the opposition off the scoreboard as the Ventura County Fusion extended its season-opening winning streak to three matches with a 1-0 win over the Southern California Seahorses Saturday night at Biola University.

The Fusion (3-0) has maximum points through three matches, having scored nine goals and conceded none.

"Not a bad start," said Fusion coach Ole Mikkelson. " What do you think?"

Hill, the Fusion goalkeeper, went the whole way for the club's third straight shutout.

"The clean sheet is probably the thing that I'm really most impressed with," said Mikkelson." We really did knuckle down.

"We had some good scoring chances that we didn't put away and, at halftime, we had to ask the guys to step it up."

Two minutes into the second half, Silva, the creative midfielder, dribbled into space and, as the defense collapsed on him, unleashed a through ball for Whitfield to control atop the 18-yard box.

Whitfield, the reigning Premier Development League Player of the Week, cut across the face of goal and finished a low shot through a defender's legs for his sixth goal in three matches.

In a meeting of the only two Southwestern Division teams to open the season 2-0, the Fusion showed the ability to grind out a result in the second half on the road.

"Those are some important skills to have," said Mikkelson.

Ventura County also improved to 3-0 in U.S. Open Cup competition. A home win over
the Hollywood United Hitman May 28 will see the four-year-old franchise in the nation's oldest soccer competition for the first time, which is one of the season's top goals.

But first, the Fusion look towards a pair of home games this weekend at Buena High, hosting the Seahorses Friday and Fresno Fuego Sunday, May 22.

Ventura College women's basketball coach Ned Mircetic on Nevada signing Ventura College's Chanelle Brennan, the Most Valuable Player of the 2010 Great Eight:

"I was shocked that she was recruited this late. Nevada has themselves a great player. They now have a scorer that doesn't need to dominate the ball to score."

University of Nevada women's basketball coach Jane Albright on signing Ventura College's Chanelle Brennan, the Most Valuable Player of the 2010 Great Eight.

"You don't have to be a brain surgeon to figure out she's a great player. The tape was very impressive and talking with her on the phone, she has an infectious personality."

"She's a person who still has a lot in her. She's long, athletic and works hard. She runs the floor, she's really fast and really quick."

(Albright was particularly impressed watching the state championship game, when Brennan earned state tournament MVP honors by piling up 33 points and five rebounds in the Pirates' 57-45 win over Fullerton.)

"She's the one that they're trying to stop and she let the game come to her, she didn't force things."

"(Ventura coach Ned Mircetic) told me that, if he was a Division I coach, she'd be the first player he'd sign," said Albright. "It was a high recommendation."

The Ventura High product, who graduates from VC next week, signed a letter of intent to join the Wolfpack early Thursday, as soon as she returned from a recruiting trip to Reno with her mother Stephanie

"It's amazing," said Brennan. "I'm really glad that I've got this opportunity."

Ventura County Fusion striker Brent Whitfield was named the first Premier Development League Player of the Week for the 2010 season.

Whitfield had five goals and an assist in Fusion wins over Lancaster and Ogden last week.

"Brent is a great all around player who knows how to put the ball in the net," assistant general manager Brian Nowakowsk told USLSoccer.comi. "He has had a history of scoring goals in this league and is doing a great job of continuing that this season with us.

"Brent has also been aided by some great service from the supporting cast of players that we have.

"Despite Brent's goal scoring totals, he is a great team player that works well with the rest of the team and can distribute the ball just as well as he can finish."

Whitfield scored 14 goals in nine games for the Los Angeles Legends last season, averaging a goal every 36 minutes he played. He is on pace to better that mark, scoring a goal in every 35 minutes thus far.

Despite Misko's top score, VC golf slumps at regionals

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

One round from qualifying for the California Community College championships, the Ventura College men's golf team suffered through a season-spoiling afternoon in the 36-hole Southern California regionals at SGCA Golf Course in Murrieta.

Sophomore Paul Misko shot a 71 and 71 for a 2-under 142 to tie for the medal, but lost a cardoff to Riverside's Nick Paez for the regional championship.

"Everything inside 100 yards, I wasn't playing my best," said Misko. "That kind of killed me... But I was making a lot of pairs, not doing anything stupid, hitting the ball straight."

The Royal High product advances to the state tournament next week in Beaumont individually, but the moment was spoiled by the Pirates missing their team goal by six strokes.

With three 79s and an 80 in the second round, Ventura finished with a 41-over 761, six strokes behind fourth-place Cypress. The top four teams advanced to next week's championships.

"I've never been an individual player," said Misko. "It's just the fact that our team's not going ruins it."

Santa Barbara, which finished third in the Western State Conference behind Canyons and Ventura, won the regional title with a 744, followed by Orange Coast (749), Riverside (753) and Cypress (755).

After a strong morning, Ventura sat tied for third at 373, three shots behind leaders Santa Barbara. Jonathan Lum shot a 72, Chad Gillespie shot a 74 and Ryan Turner and Dan Dress both shot 78.

But everything evaporated in the afternoon.

"The wind started blowing and the scores started going sky high," said Ventura coach Bob E. Smith. "Everyone thought they had to shoot 72, but it turns out we just had to shoot 77. That means everyone just needed a shot here or there."

Misko, who said the wind blew between 25 and 40 miles per hour "non-stop," started the second round with a par and two bogeys before getting going with an eagle on the fourth hole.

"Paul played his heart out," said Smith. "Other than that, I don't know what to say."

Misko singled out freshman Andy Bennett, who finished the front half of the first round 3-under par.

"We had a good season," said Misko. "Not what we wanted to do, but that's how it goes. That's golf for you."

Two days after leading the Ventura College men's tennis team to team glory, sophomores Pedro and Juan Arteaga won the state doubles title Saturday evening, topping Hasheem Bason and Justin Vea of Foothill College, 6-2, 6-1, at the Tennis Club of Newport Beach.

The brothers from Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela defeated Marcelo Alecio and Alfredo Mota of Mount San Jacinto in the semifinal, 5-7, 7-5, 6-2.

Undefeated in team play, the Arteagas finished their sophomore season with only one loss in more than 20 matches. It came in the semifinals of the Ojai tournament.

As if the weekend couldn't get any worse for the Oxnard College baseball team, No. 16 Cuesta, trailing No. 2 San Diego City 10-5 in the eighth inning, came back to beat No. 2 San Diego City 12-11 and 20-7.

If the Condors had been able to beat Palomar this weekend, they would have hosted one of the two four-team Super Regionals for a state Final Four berth next weekend.

Instead the No. 2, 3 and 4 seeds were all eliminated

WSC North partners No. 16 Cuesta and No. 13 Hancock both advanced, eliminating No. 2 San Diego City and No. 4 Chaffey.

Palomar shoves OC baseball to brink

Alfonso Casillas was 4 for 5 with two home runs and Jeremy Cline and Ty Afenir combined for eight hits and seven runs scored as No. 13 Palomar scored six unearned runs in the top of the first inning along the way to a 17-5 win over No. 3 Oxnard in the first game of the Best-of-3 Southern California regional first-round playoff series.

Palomar scored the first nine runs against an Oxnard team who had suffered nine of its 10 losses by one or two runs.

Palomar piled up 20 hits, putting up crooked numbers in four of the first five innings against Oxnard starter Justin Bricker (7-2), who had been undefeated at home.

Oxnard (26-11) must sweep a doubleheader today from Palomar (23-13) to survive and advance to next weekend's Super Regionals. Game 2 begins at 11 a.m.

Oxnard has J.C. Aguayo and Bryan Willson, who are a combined 14-5, available to pitch today.

Palomar loaded the bases with one out in the top of the first inning, but Bricker looked like he was out of the inning by striking out Anthony Meza and inducing a grounder to shortsop from Jose Rodriguez.

But an infield error opened the flood gates, as Austin Muehring hit a bases-clearing triple off the centerfield fence and Afenir followed with an RBI single.

It was the second-biggest inning of the season allowed by Oxnard, who were facing its biggest deficit of the year.

Casillas' solo shot to center in the second and RBI singles by Terrence Buchanon and Casillas in the third made it 9-0 Comets.

Oxnard clawed within 9-3 in the bottom of the third on Aguayo's RBI single, Willson's RBI double and Harper White's RBI walk. But a bigger inning was halted by Buchanon, the second baseman, whose leaping stab of Zack McDonell's line drive produced an inning-ending double play.

McDonell had also seen his potential two-RBI double robbed by a diving play by left fielder Victor Martinez in the previous inning.

Palomar ended the drama with a four-run fifth inning, featuring Casillas' two-run opposide-field shot beyond right field, which made it 13-3.

MC, VC softball eliminated by top seeds

Ventura County's two entries into the Southern California regional softball playoffs were eliminated Sunday, but not before pushing two of the Top 4 seeds.

Moorpark pitcher Kelly Eder pitched a one-hitter, but No. 2 Cypress still managed to oust the No. 15 Raiders, 2-0, in Game 2 of the teams' Best-of-3 first-round series.

No. 13 Ventura found itself in a one-run game with defending state champion Mount San Antonio, the No. 4 seed, for the second straight day, before the Mounties used another late flourish to eliminate the Pirates, 9-3, at Mazmanian Field in Walnut.

Moorpark's Laura Perry had two hits for the second straight game. The sophomore left fielder was 4 for 7 in the series.

Jamie Yaller, Bryanne Schwartz, and Cayla Nelson also singled for the Raiders (21-18), who outhit 36-6 Cypress 6-1.

Cypress mustered an unearned run in the first inning on Roni Alvarado's sacrifice fly.

Eder retired the Chargers in order the next four innings, but the Raiders couldn't capitalize at the plate, stranding seven, including five in scoring position.

Moorpark was 0 for 15 with runners on base.

Eder had a no-hitter going into the bottom of the sixth, when Nicole Nobbe drew a one-out walk and Vanessa Alvarado followed with an RBI double.

Marisa Hannemann leadoff the top of the seventh with a single to right field, bringing the tying run to the plate, but Moorpark could not muster a rally.

Mount SAC jumped out to a 4-0 lead with a pair of runs in the second and third innings, but Ventura pulled within 4-3 with a rally that included a two-run double by shortstop Alina Flowers.

The Pirates were in a one-run game in the fifth inning for the second straight game before the Mounties pushed across one in the fifth and three in the sixth, spurred by Tara Smith's bases-loaded single.

OC baseball seeded No. 3, draws Palomar

The Oxnard College baseball team was seeded No. 3 in the Southern California regional playoffs Sunday at the coaches' meeting at College of the Canyons in Santa Clarita.

The Condors (26-10) will host No. 14 Palomar College (22-13) in a Best-of-3 first-round series Friday and Saturday.

Palomar fell 6-5 to Ventura, which split four games with Oxnard in WSC North play, Feb. 26.

First pitch for Game 1 is 2 p.m.

Behind the rock-solid pitching rotation of J.C. Aguayo (7-2, 2.97 ERA), Justin Bricker (7-1, 3.84) and Bryan Willson (7-3, 2.57) and a balanced lineup led by Jonathan Erb (.414, 15 doubles, six home runs, 47 RBI) and Jake Mahan (.363, 12 extra base hits, 40 runs scored), Oxnard swept second-place Hancock to win its first WSC North title since 2005 by three games last week.

The Condors were ranked No. 4 in Southern California and No. 9 in the Western region in last week's polls, before rising to No. 3 in the final RPI Index Saturday.

Oxnard manager Jon Larson was hopeful of the No. 2 seed, since the top two seeds face the winners of Wednesday's play-in games, where winners can burn through their pitching staffs in a single must-win game. Plus, the top two seeds are in line to host the two Super Regionals, May 15-16.

"I was hoping to get the No. 2 seed because that's a huge advantage," said Larson.

No. 1 Santa Ana (28-8) and No. 2 San Diego City (26-7) are the top seeds.

Oxnard beat Santa Ana, 8-0, on April 6, becoming just the second team to shut out the three-time state champion in 162 games since Feb. 6, 2007.

Ventura (27-13) must sweep a doubleheader today at Mount SAC (31-10) to advance to the second round.

With pitcher Jen Juarez keeping the defending state champions silent at the plate for the first three innings, Ventura was unable to score, despite getting the leadoff batter on base in the top of the third and fourth.

But Randazzo led off the fourth inning with a double to left-center field that fell between two Pirates. Two batters later, Heather Harrison followed with an RBI single.

The Mounties took control with four runs on five straight hits in the bottom of the fifth, which included another Randazzo double.

Ventura cut it to 5-2 in the top of the six as Shianne Sharp doubled, Alina Flowers walked and Julie Cortez drove them in with a two-RBI double.

Cypress 7, Moorpark 1: No. 2 Cypress used a six-run fifth inning to come from behind for a 7-1 win over the No. 15 Moorpark College women's softball team Saturday in the first game of the teams' Best-of-3 first-round playoff series.

Cayla Nelson reached on an error, stole second and scored on a fielders choice to give the Raiders the lead in the third inning.

Laura Perry was 2 for 3 and Taylor Neumann was 1 for 3 for the Raiders.

Moorpark pitcher Kelly Eder (17-12) shut out Cypress through four innings, striking out six.

Marilyn Toriz two-RBI double and Brianne Webster's bases clearing triple spurred the big inning.

Moorpark (21-17) must sweep a doubleheader today at Cypress (35-6) to progress to next week's second round.
