Comings and goings

The summer is a slow time for the local community colleges, except for the human resources department.

Oxnard College was already in the process of hiring assistant coaches for its men's soccer and women's volleyball programs. Now it will have to replace athletic trainer Jill Muhe, who is leaving to become the head women's volleyball coach at Briar Cliffs University in Sioux City, Iowa.

Moorpark College is in the process of replacing assistant women's basketball coach Lori Chandler, who has retired from coaching, and hiring an assistant football coach.

"Football is closed and the women's basketball job closes any day now," said Moorpark athletic director Howard Davis.

Condors still flying

The success of the Oxnard College baseball team hasn't stopped with a championship season on the diamond.

At least 10 Condors have signed to play for four-year schools next year.

"That's a large group, the most we've ever had," said Oxnard head coach Jon Larson. "We had a good group."

At least three players from the Western State Conference title-winning team will be playing Division I baseball next year. Third baseman Bryan Willson (Camarillo High), the WSC North Player of the Year, has signed with Central Arkansas University. Center fielder Brad Greve (Newbury Park) has signed with Long Island University. Catcher Zack McDonell (Pacifica) has signed with Hawaii.

That number would climb to four if pitcher Justin Bricker (Camarillo) can successfully walk onto the team at Stanford. The engineering student with a 4.0 GPA has already beaten long odds by successfully transferring to the prestigious Palo Alto school.

"It's pretty exciting for us," said assistant coach Roger Frash.

Pitchers Chris Defratus (Rio Mesa), Santos Reyes (Channel Islands) and Joey Juarez (Hueneme) will give Division II Colorado State-Pueblo a trio of Oxnard-native arms.

All-State picks Jonathan Erb (Camarillo) and J.C. Aguayo (Hueneme) highlight the Condors moving on to NAIA schools. First baseman Erb will swing it for Azusa Pacific. Outfielders Aguayo and Juan Reveles (Oxnard) are headed to Northwestern Oklahoma. First baseman Scott McNally will play for Friends University (Kan.)

"That's what it's all about," said Larson. "That's the most important thing."

Franz signs with the Master's College

It's not just the baseball players who are earning scholarships at Oxnard. Dominique Franz, the co-captain of the women's volleyball team, will play at Master's College in Santa Clarita this fall, according to the Oxnard College website.

The 6-foot middle blocker from Hueneme High led the team in kills.

Team America

The state champion Ventura College men's swimming team had 21 individuals and five relay teams achieve All-American status this past season.

Ventura High product Steven Edgar was a seven-time All-American by finishing in the Top 16 nationally in eight different events -- the 200-yard freestyle, the 200 individual medley, the 100 and 200 butterflies, the 200 and 400 medley relays and the 800 free relays.
After one year at VC, Edgar plans to transfer to the Savannah (Ga.) College of Art and Design.

Oaks Christian High product Michael Craft (100 free, 200 free, 200, 400 and 800 free relays) and Daniel Colvin (50 free, 200 and 400 medley relays, 200 and 400 free relays) were both five-time All-Americans.

Oaks Christian High product Collin Baratte (100 and 200 backstroke, 200 and 400 medley relay) and Rafael Ingannamonte (100 and 200 breast stroke, 200 and 400 medley relay) were four-time All-Americans.

David Hine (200 and 400 I.M., 200 back) and Erik Rennspiess (200 free, 400 and 800 free relay) were three-time All-Americans.

Jordan Singleton (100 and 200 back), Simi Valley High product Wade Federer (100 and 200 fly), Camarillo High product Evan Hedrick (200 fly, 800 free relay) and Ventura High product Spencer McGrath (200 and 400 free relay) were two-time All-Americans.

Pacifica High product Michael Crowley (200 free relay) and Thousand Oaks High Michael Fernandez (400 I.M) were All-Americans in one event.

Crowley will swim and play water polo for the University of Redlands. Federer will walk on at USC.

The VC men's water polo team will be boosted by the additions of Colvin and Baratte this fall.

One year before being hired as Ventura College's new football coach, Steve Mooshagian was a candidate to join Jim Bittner's staff at rival Moorpark.

"He was good," said Moorpark athletic director Howard Davis, who interviewed Mooshagian along with Bittner. "I was impressed... He'll be good for them."

First half: Hakop Avesyan scores for the second time in two days, converting Thomaz's pass in the 28th minute, to give the Fusion a 1-0 lead. If it stays like this, the Fusion are in the playoffs and top the Southwest Division with a match to play.

Second half: Midfielder Andy Rose makes it 2-0 Fusion in the 70th minute, set up by Danny Barerra.
