Moorpark College pitcher Landon Hunt has signed a letter of intent to play for Long Beach State.

The sophomore from Moorpark High provided three of the Raiders' nine wins last spring, striking out 61 in 64 2/3 innings. Hunt also led Moorpark in batting average, collecting 17 hits in just 47 at bats.

No. 16 Moorpark (6-4) at No. 13 Chaffey (6-4)
Western State Bowl
Grigsby Field, 6 p.m.
LAST WEEK: Los Angeles Harbor 46, Moorpark 14; Chaffey 35, Antelope Valley 10.
SERIES HISTORY: Chaffey leads the series, 3-2. Moorpark won the last meeting, 24-21 on Oct. 30.
GAME FACTS: A two-game losing streak to end conference play has handed Moorpark a rematch with a Chaffey team it has already beaten, albeit under dramatic circumstances. QB Zach Shultis hit WR Chris Gant with an 8-yard TD pass on fourth down with 33 seconds to play to lift the Raiders. Gant, who leads Southern California in receptions (80), receiving yardage (1,127) and TDs (17) despite being shut out last week, had his best game against the Panthers, piling up 17 catches, 238 yards and three TDs. Moorpark must make some adjustments against unit that is No. 4 in scoring defense (22.4 ppg) and turnover margin (plus 7). WR Dominick Markham (21 rec., 226 yards), who had his breakout game against Chaffey, had two special teams TDs last week. Shultis has completed 189-of-343 passing for 2,204 yards and 14 TDs.

Petrie back on course

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

Home wasn't quite a direction for Charlie Petrie.

The Oaks Christian product admits to being confused when he returned home after one semester at Boise State University.

"I wasn't sure where my life is going," said Petrie.

But after a standout season with the Moorpark College cross-country team, Petrie has regained his momentum.

After winning the Western State Conference individual title and finishing fifth last week at the Southern California finals, the Calabasas native is aiming for a Top 5 finish at the California Community College championships Saturday in Fresno.

"He has so much talent and he's just one of those guys that needs to find the motivation," said Moorpark coach Traycie Kephart. "But he's really put it in overdrive and has become more of a positive team leader, as well."

Petrie will return to the Woodward Park course, hoping to better his sixth-place finish from the Division IV state meet in 2008.

"It's kind of like old times," said Petrie. "It's familiar to me."

The Magic number

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

Five is the magic number for the Moorpark College cross-country teams Saturday, when, on top of Charlie Petrie's Top 5 individual aspirations, the five runners who have carried the Moorpark women's team will also be working towards a Top 5 finish.

"We've been blessed this season," said coach Traycie Kephart. "We've had five women pretty much this whole season. The fact that they've been able to stay so healthy and keep improving has amazed me."

The Raiders finished fifth at SoCals behind a 12th-place finish (19:40) by freshman Nicole Rietvelt, followed by Andrea Barrera (34th, 20:23), Alexis Pichardo (45th, 20:39), Ashley Hamiltion (53rd, 20:55) and Torrie Marschik (66th, 21:05).

Measuring up

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

The rolling hills and natural surfaces of Woodward Park provide a measuring stick to the runners, considering the course is also the venue of the state high school championships.

"Most of our athletes have run it before in high school," said Kephart, "so it's really neat to see how they improve... It's a big honor to run in Fresno."

After a season of fair weather, the runners may be in store for a challenge in their final race.

"We've had a really nice season in regards to weather and it's supposed to be cold and rainy on Saturday," said Kephart, "so it's interesting to see how they'll compete."

Racing back

Moorpark College outside hitter Shannon Pearson may be on the verge of returning to the Raiders' women's volleyball team just in time for the postseason.

The sophomore from Thousand Oaks, who has missed the last nine games after suffering a severely sprained ankle in practice last month, had her cast removed Thursday.

Pearson is resigned to missing Tuesday's postseason opener, but, should the Raiders progress, she hopes to return in time to contribute in a potential second-round game.

"I'm so excited," said Pearson. "I need to get some range of motion back, but I'm hoping to get cleared for our next game."

Monson on Ennis addition

Ventura College men's basketball forward James Ennis signed a letter of intent to play for Long Beach State Wednesday.

After receiving the letter, 49ers coach Dan Monson expressed his excitement:

"Our staff feels he is the best player in the Southern California junior college system and has the ability to be the most versatile player in our program," said Monson in a release. "He can play either guard spot along with the small forward position.

"James is a tremendous athlete with great size and length along with a very high level skill package. He will also help address our need for perimeter shooting."

MC volleyball clinches third-straight WSC title

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

Karissa Flack had 15 kills and Jessica Soprano had 17 assists as the Moorpark College women's volleyball team clinched a share of its third straight Western State Conference title with a three-game sweep of visiting Cuesta Tuesday night at Raider Pavilion.

Erika Smith had 12 digs, Michelle Tanaka had seven aces and Alyssa Del Sesto and Chelcy Westphal had five kills apiece as the No. 13-ranked Raiders (14-7) bounced back from Friday's loss in Santa Barbara to win, 25-10, 25-14, 26-24.

"We were awfully leery," said Moorpark coach Steve Burkhart. "I tried to convince the girls that this was our home playoff game. We needed to focus."

Moorpark dominated the first two games before surviving a game point to come from behind to take the third game.

"For us, it was trying to serve tough and play with a lot of passion," said Burkhart.

For the second straight season, Moorpark and Santa Barbara City split the WSC North title at 9-1. They split their two meetings, the home team prevailing on both occasions.
Moorpark also won three consecutive titles under Burkhart from 2001-03.

"We're pretty honored by it," said Burkhart.

The field for the Southern California regional playoffs will be announced Sunday.

Solid start to Mooshagian era

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

The final record is deceiving.

After three losses in its final four games, the Ventura College football team finished its season 5-5, tied for fourth place in the Northern Conference and will not be playing in a bowl this weekend.

Yet, considering the Pirates legitimately competed for a playoff berth against probably the toughest schedule in school history, it's difficult to nitpick Steve Mooshagian's first season as head coach.

"I thought it was s successful year because people didn't think we'd win two games," said Mooshagian. "I think we surprised almost everybody, including everyone in our league... We're two plays from being 7-3."

Eight of the 10 teams the Pirates played were ranked in the final coaches' poll Sunday and a ninth also received votes.

"A dozen kids are going to get scholarships out of those group," said Mooshagian. "I'm proud of what they accomplished."

Ventura performed well against two of the Southern California semifinalists, beating No. 3 Cerritos in Norwalk 28-21 on Oct. 16 and taking a two-touchdown lead into the fourth quarter at No. 4 Bakersfield Oct. 23, before falling in overtime 27-24.

"Our first two league games were against the two playoff teams and we should have won them both," said Mooshagian.

In fact, the Pirates were in all five of their losses. They were tied 27-27 with Fullerton with three minutes left in the third quarter, leading Chaffey 10-6 with three minutes to play, leading Bakersfield 24-10 with 11 minutes to play, tied 24-24 with Canyons entering the fourth quarter and trailing El Camino 35-31 entering the fourth quarter.

"The No. 1 thing is we didn't protect the football down the stretch, late in the fourth quarter," said Mooshagian. "A lot of it was just crazy bounces."

The season came undone in the fourth quarter, when Ventura outscored 63-7 in its five losses, which included backbreaking defensive touchdowns in its final three losses.

Itching to play

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

Saturday's Western State Bowl certainly means something to Moorpark safety Brian Baldwin.

The Camarillo High product, who has 46 tackles and six interceptions in eight games, was one of several key Raiders sidelined during last weekend's loss to Los Angeles Harbor

"It was horrible," said Baldwin. "I felt so bad that I couldn't help."

Baldwin broke his orbital bone in four places after taking an elbow to the face playing pickup basketball last week.

Despite being schedule for surgery Thursday, he hopes to play Saturday at Chaffey.

"I don't think that's going to stop me," said Baldwin.

Doctors have told Baldwin that, as long as he wears a face shield, the decision is his.

"He's a tough kid," said Moorpark coordinator Mike Stuart, "but we'll see how he feels."

Rewriting the record book

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

As a sophomore, Ventura quarterback Antavius Sims finished second in Southern California in total offense (2,960 yards), fourth in scoring (15 touchdowns) and fifth in rushing (1,014 yards).

He set school records for single-season and career total offense (4,866 yards).

He also finished his two-year career second all-time in career scoring (25 TDs), passing (3,273 yards), TD passes (24), rushing TDs (25) and finished fourth in rushing (1,593 yards).

In demand

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

With no more football to play, the Ventura College football team can turn to recruiting. Head coach Steve Mooshagian estimated that as many as 12 of the 17 sophomores should earn scholarships, including the big three of Sims, linebacker Brenden Daley and defensive end Jon Lattimore.

"Half of my day is answering the phone calls," said Mooshagian. "Not just for Tay, but there's a whole bunch of others."

Mooshagian said Sims, Daley and Lattimore have attracted about a dozen schools apiece.

The list is too long to publish, but Washington, Ole Miss and Rutgers are three of the bigger schools interested in Sims, whose destination will hinge on whether he wants to continue to play quarterback or another position.

"Some people are recruiting him as a quarterback, some as an athlete," said Mooshagian. "We'll see what he decides to do."

Iowa State, Baylor and Hawaii are three of the schools recruiting Lattimore, who finished third in SoCal with eight sacks.

Daley is being pursued by Washington, Utah, Hawaii and Cincinnati, among others. The Moorpark High product plans to travel south Saturday to see the Utes play San Diego State.

Other in-demand Pirates include running back Mike Davis, center Ramon Diaz, punter Kyle Dugandzic and kicker David Brown, who are all eligible to transfer after next month.

Sims on the court

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

The football season may have just ended, but Ventura College quarterback Antavius Sims is already making the transition to basketball season.

The sophomore from Americus, Ga. practiced with the Ventura College men's basketball team (2-1) Monday and Tuesday and is expected to play this weekend in the Irvine Valley tournament.

"He might be a little worn down form taking the hits every weekend on the football field, so we'll bring him along slowly," said Ventura coach Will Cowen. "But he worked hard today and had great enthusiasm."

Sims averaged 7.6 points and 3.6 rebounds as a freshman, but was slowed by an ankle injury sustained on the football field. He scored in double figures in six of his final 10
games.

"He'll probably play limited minutes this weekend, until he gets his legs under him and learns the stuff we've been doing," said Cowen. "I don't anticipate him taking long."

CC soccer pairings released

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

Contributing to a vintage soccer season for the Western State Conference, three local teams were seeded in the Southern California regional playoffs when the pairings were released Tuesday.

All three were handed an opportunity for revenge in Saturday's regional quarterfinals.

The Ventura College women's soccer team (15-3-2), the No. 2 seed for the third straight year, will host No. 15 San Diego Mesa (13-7) Saturday at the VC Sportsplex.

Mesa eliminated Ventura in the 2008 regional semifinals by winning, 2-0, in Ventura.

No. 10 Moorpark (12-5-2), in the postseason for the 10th straight year, will visit WSC North foe Santa Barbara City (15-3-2), the No. 7 seed, Saturday.

The Vaqueros took four points from the Moorpark this season and eliminated the Raiders, 3-0, in the 2007 regional quarterfinals.

The Oxnard College men's soccer team (12-4-5), the No. 9 seed, will visit No. 8 Los Angeles Harbor (9-4-7) Saturday at 2 p.m.

The Condors were eliminated, 3-0, at Harbor in the 2008 regional quarterfinals.

Ennis to sign with Long Beach State

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

James Ennis, Ventura College's 6-foot-7 forward, verbally committed to Long Beach State head coach Dan Monson Monday after an on-campus visit.

The Ventura High product is expected to sign a letter of intent today to join the 49ers next season, VC coach Will Cowen said Tuesday.

"I think it's a good place for him," said Cowen.

Ennis is averaging 22.3 points and 8.3 rebounds through three games for the 2-1 Pirates after transferring from Oxnard College, where he averaged 19.0 points and 7.7 rebounds as a freshman. As a high jumper, he also won the Western State Conference and Southern California regional titles.

Antelope Valley takes VC men's tournament

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

Despite 18 points from James Ennis and 17 points from Eric Mitchell, the Ventura College men's basketball team fell to No. 11-ranked Antelope Valley, 68-65, in the championship game of the "We Play Hard" tournament Saturday night at the VC Athletic Event Center.

"As long as we respond to it, we'll be fine," said Ventura coach Will Cowen. "We need to fix a few things and we'll be OK."

With a run that included two Ennis highlight-reel dunks, No. 13 Ventura (2-1) built a 36-17 lead on Austin Ramljak's 3-pointer with 6:10 left in the first half.

But the Marauders (3-0) responded behind their twin towers of 6-foot-8 George McGrew (19 points) and 6-7 Kyisean Reed (18 points), pulling within 41-30 at the half and 52-51 with 9:22 to play.

"We always seemed to be in foul trouble, especially inside," said Cowen. "And you can't afford to be in foul trouble with your bigs against Antelope Valley because that's their strength... It took almost every foul to stay in the game."

Ennis fouled out with 54 seconds to play. But despite trailing 65-61 with 30 seconds to play, Ventura earned a shot to tie at the buzzer.

"As poorly as we executed, we had a shot at the end to be in it," said Cowen. "I was
proud of that."

For third place, No. 7 Bakersfield held off Orange Coast, 93-87, in overtime. Pasadena City beat Los Angeles Valley, 90-82, in the consolation final.

Reed was named tournament MVP. McGrew, Mitchell, Ennis and Bakersfield's Stevie Howard joined him on the All-Tournament team.

The Pirates face Cerritos in the first round of the Irvine Valley tournament Thursday.

Moorpark going bowling

After missing out on the Western Conference title Saturday night in Wilmington, the Moorpark College football team can console itself with the program's 18th bowl berth.

The Raiders (6-4) will visit conference foe Chaffey (6-4) Saturday night in the Western State Bowl, the Southern California Football Association announced Sunday.

One year after the school's first winless season, reaching the postseason stands as a significant achievement.

"It's nice to be back in the bowl business," said Moorpark coach Jim Bittner.

El Camino (1-8) at No. 10 Ventura (5-4)
VC Sportsplex, 1 p.m.
LAST WEEK: Canyons 37, Ventura 24; El Camino 29, Hancock 21
SERIES HISTORY: El Camino has won all seven meetings dating back to
1953. El Camino won the last meeting, 38-14, in 2004.
GAME FACTS: The playoff window may nearly be shut for the Ventura, but
the Pirates can become bowl eligible with a win. Success would also
make school history, as Ventura has never beaten powerhouse El Camino,
which has fallen on hard times this year due to forfeits incurred by
playing an ineligible player. Don't let the record foul you, the
Warriors are still tough. They are No. 4 in total offense (427.2 ypg)
and No. 6 in total defense (315.6 ypg) and coming off their first
official victory. Ventura QB Antavius Sims needs 94 yards rushing to
become the ninth Pirate to rush for 1,000 yards. Sims is also No. 2 in
total offense, with a school record 2,630 yards. LBs Brenden Daley and
Kenny Breaux are 10 and 11 tackles, respectively, short of 100 for the
season. DE John Lattimore is No. 2 in SoCal with eight sacks. CB
Kentrell Everett has four interceptions, despite playing just half the
season.

No. 12 Moorpark (6-3) at No. 11 Los Angeles Harbor (7-2)
Casey Field, 6 p.m.
LAST WEEK: Citrus 20, Moorpark 15; Los Angeles Harbor 53, Antelope Valley 48
SERIES HISTORY: Moorpark leads the series, 14-6, dating back to 1968.
Moorpark won the last meeting, 28-26, in 2004.
GAME FACTS: The six-game winning streak perished last week, but not
the Raiders hopes for another conference title. The Western Conference
can be won on the road tonight in Wilmington. The Raiders, who are No.
8 against the run, allowing 3.2 yards per carry, must stop the No. 1
ground game in Southern California. Behind RB John White (168 att.,
1,390 yards, 15 TDs) and a massive offensive line, the Seahawks are
averaging 274.4 yards and more than three TDs per game. White is No. 1
in all-purpose yardage (194.1 ypg), No. 2 in rushing and No. 2 in
scoring. Harbor is also No. 1 in sacks (32) and punt returns (15.7
ypr). Theron West has returned two punts for scores. Moorpark's secret
to success is easy to see. The Raiders are No. 4 in scoring defense
(21.3 ppg) and turnover margin (plus 6) and No. 7 in pass offense
(252.0 ypg). QB Zach Shultis is 95 passing yards away from the
2,000-yard mark. WR Chris Gant leads Southern California in receptions
(80), receiving yardage (1,127) and touchdowns (17).

VC women's water polo wins playoff game

Vanessa Maggallanes and Samathana Ebberson scored two goals apiece and Raylene Morales had four steals as the No. 9-seeded Ventura College women's water polo team defeated No. 8 Grossmont 7-5 Thursday afternoon in the first round of the Southern California regional playoffs in San Luis Obispo.

Morales opened the scoring and anchored the Pirates' defensive effort, helping to build a 4-0 halftime lead along the way to the program's first postseason win since 2007.

The win also avenged one of the Pirates losses. Grossmont beat Ventura, 9-4, on Sept. 11. The three-time defending Western State Conference champion has won six straight games and hasn't lost in regulation since Oct. 9.

"It's great for us," said Ventura coach Mary Giles. "Our girls are excited."

Ventura (19-8) advances to play top-seeded Riverside in today's quarterfinals at Cuesta College.

"We just play," said Giles. "We go all out and have nothing to lose.

Deep field set for VC tipoff

The Ventura College men's basketball team will welcome a deep field to the third annual "We Play Hard" basketball tournament this afternoon.

As well as the host Pirates, ranked No. 13 in Southern California, the field includes No. 7 Bakersfield, No. 11 Antelope Valley and No. 14 Chaffey, as well as a talented Oxnard team.

The Condors (0-1), which fell to Los Angeles Trade Tech in its opener Monday despite 23 points from promising freshman Marcus Falley, faces Bakersfield in today's 3 p.m. quarterfinal.

Ventura follows at 5 p.m. against Los Angeles Valley and former Pirates coach Virgil Watson.

With Oxnard transfer James Ennis and speedster point guard Eric Mitchell joining sophomores Paul Batausa and Mike Melonas, the Pirates have improved from the group that finished strong in conference play a year ago.

"We've just added depth, competitiveness and toughness to the lineup," said second-year VC coach Will Cowen.

VC, MC still working towards postseason

They have given away their prime positions. The route to glory may not be as clear as it once was.

But the Ventura College and Moorpark College football teams are not prepared to give up on their seasons, despite giving away key conference games last Saturday.

Ventura gifted a 37-24 loss at Canyons that was tied 24-24 entering the fourth quarter on a muffed punt and an interception return for a touchdown.

"It's frustrating," said Ventura coach Steve Mooshagian. "It's been the story of that league. When you play a schedule like we play, all the teams are dang good. ... Turnovers kill you."

Moorpark, a taker over the course of a six-game winning streak, gave the ball away five times in a 20-15 loss to visiting Citrus.

"We just didn't execute very well," said Moorpark quarterback Zach Shultis. "Just across the board, we didn't play very well. But we've addressed it and we're ready to move on from it."

But both teams can still extend their seasons with wins in Saturday's regular- season finales.

"I'm proud that we're going into the last game of the season with something on the line," said Mooshagian.

Ventura (5-4, 2-2), ranked No. 10 in Southern California, can clinch a winning record and solidify a bowl berth by beating visiting El Camino. Although Mooshagian isn't willing to concede the Pirates' playoff chances are completely gone.

"Mathematically, although it is a long shot, we're still in that playoff picture," said Mooshagian, whose team might be able to wriggle into the Southern California regional playoffs on a three-way tiebreaker with a win combined with a Cerritos loss to Hancock.

With a win at No. 11 Los Angeles Harbor (7-2, 4-0), No. 12 Moorpark (6-3, 3-1) can still win the Western Conference title on a head-to-head tiebreaker.

"It's huge," said Shultis. "It's what we set out for in the beginning of the year, to still be able to fight for that championship with one game left. We're excited for it."

Comeback player of the week

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

Tim Vizzi ended up being worth the wait for the Ventura College football team.

Playing in his first action of the season after suffering a preseason back injury, the Moopark High product earned SCFA Northern Division offensive player of the week honors by catching eight passes for 128 yards and a touchdown at College of the Canyons.

"It's definitely something I've been waiting for," said Vizzi. "I didn't want to come back too early and mess things up. I've been waiting it out, riding it out."

On the week leading up to the Pirates' opener against Moorpark, Vizzi, a receiver who transferred to Ventura from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, awoke with a bulging disc.

While players like Renwick Scissom and Jordan Anderson stepped forward to give quarterback Antavius Sims some receiving options, Vizzi could only wait to heal.

"I just woke up one day and couldn't really move," said Vizzi. "It was definitely a mind battle, to be sitting out there knowing that you could be contributing. Patience is a virtue that you have to have in this game."

Vizzi arrived Saturday, when five of his receptions converted Ventura third downs. And Mooshagian expects even more this week.

"He'll be better this week because it takes you about two weeks to get yourself back in playing shape," said coach Steve Mooshagian.

Learning experience

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

You don't see a 1-7 team stop a six-game winning streak very often, which is why some were stunned by Citrus' upset of the Raiders.

But Shultis left Griffin Stadium impressed with the Owls.

"Citrus is a good team, their record doesn't show what type of team they are," said Shultis. "They've been in every game and they had some great athletes out there."

The Owls hadn't scored more than 14 points in their previous four games and only put up 13 points offensively Saturday.

The big blow was a 56-yard fumble return by Kevin Puckett early in the third quarter that gave Citrus a 14-3 lead that it never relinquished.

Moorpark, which entered play No. 4 in turnover margin, lost the turnover battle, giving the ball away five times.

Shultis thinks Saturday's loss will make the Raiders tougher to beat come this weekend's title tilt.

"This past week was a big learning experience," said Shultis. "It taught us a lot about ourselves. We know we have to come out and can't take anything for granted."

VC, MC football rise to Top-10 status

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

With two weeks to play in the regular season, the Ventura College and Moorpark College football teams have both risen to the Top 10 in Southern California.

At No. 7 and No. 15 in the state, the Pirates (5-3) find themselves as the top-ranked three-loss team in both the region state.

Riding high on a 6-game winning streak, the Raiders (6-2) are No. 9 in Southern California and tied for No. 20 in the state.

Both are also in the eight-team "acknowledgments" section of this week's JC Grid-wire/JCFootball.com national poll, along with Canyons, which Ventura faces Saturday in a Northern Conference elimination game, and Los Angeles Harbor, which Moorpark may face next week in a winner-take-all Western Conference showdown.

Eight of the 10 opponents on Ventura's schedule are ranked. The Pirates' top-notch schedule features Nos. 2, 4, 5, 9, 10, 16, 17, 19. The group is a combined 42-22.

Pirates showing strength

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

Saturday night, the Ventura College football team bounced back from the devastating loss at Bakersfield with its biggest win over Hancock in 25 years.

One week after letting a 14-point lead with 11 minutes to play slip at the No. 7-ranked team in the country, the Pirates showed poise in pounding its neighbors from Santa Maria 48-19.

"We have a 24-hour rule to either enjoy a win or be upset with a loss," said Ventura coach Steve Mooshagian. "You have to get it out of your system."

Ventura had only beaten Hancock three times in 16 meetings since a 42-0 win in 1985.

Now 2-1 in Northern Conference play with this weekend's trip to Canyons (5-3, 2-1) and a home visit by El Camino (0-8, 0-3), the Pirates (5-3) are still alive for one of Southern California's four playoff berths.

"I try really hard not to think ahead or talk ahead," said Mooshagian. "I try to take care of business in the moment."

The first-year coach did hint at optimism by saying, "I have enough energy for at least five more games."

Such a run would only be possible if the Pirates reach the state title game Dec. 11.

Shultis brothers in arms

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

By throwing for 408 yards in Saturday's dramatic, come-from-behind 24-21 win at Chaffey, Moorpark College quarterback Zach Shultis joined his brother Ian as the only two Raiders quarterbacks to throw for 400 yards in a game.

"It's an honor to be able to join him," said Shultis, who backed up his younger brother last season. "It's pretty cool."

By throwing for 432 yards against Santa Ana last year, Ian Shultis, who is now at Massachusetts, broke Farhaad Azimi's 10-year-old school record of 338 yards.

A career backup at Thousand Oaks High and Moorpark College, Zach has blossomed as a starter this year, winning six straight starts. Despite sharing snaps with sophomore Dalton Botts, he is No. 6 in Southern California in passing at 216.5 yards per game.

"I knew once I got the opportunity that I'd be able to prove myself," said Shultis. "Week in and week out, we've played as a team and come out victorious."

With two games to play, Moorpark (6-2, 3-0) is tied atop the Western Conference with Los Angeles Harbor.

"You can't ask for anything more than to be able to control your own destiny with two games to go," said Shultis. "We know that if we do our part, we're going to be conference champions."

Gant watch, episode 8

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

Moorpark College star receiver Chris Gant continues to astound on a weekly basis.

Despite suffering from an abscessed tooth, the sophomore broke his own school record with 17 receptions for 238 yards and all three Raiders touchdowns Saturday, including the game-winner on fourth down with 33 seconds to play.

"They were double-covering him, sometimes triple covering him, and he was still able to get the ball," said quarterback Zach Shultis. "When you see him go up with a cornerback, you know he's the one who will come down with the ball."

All three scores were highlight-reel material, but his best catch of the night probably came nine plays before the game-winning score. On third-and-10 from the Moorpark 47, Gant somehow made a sprawling catch on his backside to keep the drive alive.

"That was an absolutely phenomenal catch," said Shultis. "I put it a little bit too far outside, I still don't know how he was able to sprawl out and get that ball... He's just been unreal."

As a sophomore, Gant now has 72 catches for 1,041 yards and 16 touchdowns. All three figures lead the state.

The single-season reception figure is a school record, breaking the mark set by Isaiah Mustafa in 1994, and the yardage mark is 45 yards short of Mustafa's record.

He now has 136 catches for 1,852 yards and 32 touchdowns on his career. The reception and yardage figures have bettered the 25-year-old school records set by Dan Russell in 1984-85 (100 rec., 1,729 yards).

Saturday's 17-catch, 238-yard performance broke Gant's own school record of 16 set Sept. 22 against Hancock and was 12 yards short of Curtis Marsh's 250-yard performance set in 1991 against Ventura.

Sims, Miller honored as PotWs

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

Ventura College quarterback Antavius Sims and defensive end Daniel Miller were honored as Northern Conference Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week Monday.

Sims, a sophomore from Americus, Ga., was responsible for six VC touchdowns in Saturday's 48-19 win over Hancock, throwing for four and running for two.

He ran for a 54-yard touchdown on the second play from scrimmage and the Pirates never looked back.

"It was his read and he darted through the defense and the secondary," said Ventura coach Steve Mooshagian. "It was a nice play by him."

Miller, a freshman from Thousand Oaks, had 12 tackles, four tackles for losses, two sacks and a forced fumble.

Vizzi mulls return for VC football

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

The Ventura College football team's depleted receiving corps may get a boost this week as Tim Vizzi mulls a late-season return.

The Moorpark High product, who transferred from Cal Poly, has yet to play for the Pirates after suffering a back injury just before the first week of the season.

"He's very versatile," said Mooshagian. "He's very intelligent. He can probably play three different spots for us."

Since Vizzi already used his redshirt in San Luis Obispo, returning would only make sense for Vizzi if he sees himself as an eventual Division I player. Only Division II athletes are allowed to stop their clock.

"I just gave him all the facts and I'll let him make the decision that is best for him," said Mooshagian. "He still has until the end of the week to make the decision. I'm going to respect him either way."

Ventura lost several key receivers before its season opener, including Vizzi, Gordon Warner and Abraham Taylor.

Kicking themselves

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

Both teams struggled in the kicking game Saturday, each missing a pair of field goals inside 40 yards.

Ventura kicker David Brown missed a pair of 36-yard attempts from the right hash, bringing back memories of the failed game-winning attempt from 33 yards against Chaffey Sept. 25.

But despite giving punter Kyle Dugandzic a chance to kick a late extra point, Mooshagian said he will stick with Brown.

"It's not just the kicker, it's the whole group," said Mooshagian. "Snap, hold and protection."

"David Brown will be back kicking for us. He's made some good field goals for us. The further back, the better he is."

Moorpark also struggled as Jesus Tafoya missed from 33 yards on the final play of the first half and Shultis missed from 38 yards late in the third quarter.
