Condors finding rare air

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

The Oxnard College men's basketball team finds itself in a strange position this week.
In control of the Western State Conference race.

Wednesday's results, which included a 70-68 OC win over visiting Santa Barbara City, put the Condors two full games ahead of the chasing pack in the WSC North, the two-loss crew of Ventura, Hancock and Santa Barbara.

It's probably been a generation, since the title-winning teams of Leroy Porter in 1979, 1980 and 1982, since the Condors last wrapped their talons around the WSC in such a way.

"Last year, we knocked off some big fish," said Oxnard coach Jason Cunningham. "This year, we're trying to be the big fish."

With teams led by Chris Massie, Jeremiah Massey and others, Oxnard has had the talent to be in this position previously. But this group, led by 6-foot-4 sophomore forward Scooter Holmes, showed its mettle Wednesday night.

Santa Barbara City may have lost by 30 points at Condor Center on Nov. 27, but the Vaqueros were coming off an upset win over Ventura Saturday and built a 60-53 lead with less than seven minutes to play.

"There were more prepared for what we were trying to do," said Holmes.

With high-scoring sophomore Marc Pajund out injured and high-scoring freshman Marcus Falley limited to 13 points, Holmes, who sometimes fulfils his role as a sophomore leader by yielding some of the glory to his younger teammates, took control, sparking a key 13-3 run with a thunderous dunk in transition.

"Because everybody else is playing so well, I think Scooter sometimes takes a back seat," said Cunningham. "But we needed our all-conference player."

After Malcolm Pope's steal and layup tied the game 62-62, Holmes gave Oxnard its first lead with a put back with 2:28 to play.

"It was just one of those nights when I had to play well for us to win," said Holmes, who finished with 23 points, including 19 in the second half, and six rebounds. "It was on my back."

Santa Barbara had the ball trailing by 2 with 12 seconds to play, but Holmes' steal inside
clinched the win.

"We played like a team that's trying to be a champion is supposed to," said Cunningham.
"We were down, we had the gut check and we were committed to do the things to get ourselves back in the basketball game."

Melonas honored

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

Ventura College sophomore Mike Melonas was honored as this week's WSC North men's basketball Player of the Week.

Melonas, the 6-foot-7 sophomore center from Ventura High, had 19 points, seven rebounds, four assists, three blocks and two steals in the Pirates 78-68 win over rival Moorpark on Jan. 12.

Melonas shared the honor with Hancock forward Ali Langford, who entered this week leading the WSC North in scoring at 21.9 points per game and had 23 points and 15 rebounds the Bulldogs 83-64 win at Moorpark Wednesday.

Wednesday night's WSC North women's showdown between first-place Ventura and second-place Los Angeles Pierce developed into a midseason test of depth.

The Pirates practiced Tuesday without three of its four leading scorers, Destinee LaFountain (ankle), Rebecca Griffin (flu-like symptoms) and Ja'Lisa Gatlin (flu-like symptoms).

But the Brahmas were forced to play without its second-leading scorer Amari Hampton, who entered the week No. 9 in the state in scoring at 18.8 points per game.

Interestingly enough, Hampton is only third in scoring among WSC North players. In Pierce guard Monica Jackson (26.5 ppg) and Hancock guard Camille Zumbro (24.8 ppg), the WSC North features the state's Top 2 scorers.

Three Pirates miss practice

The first-place Ventura College women's basketball team is ailing ahead of Wednesday's important trip to second-place Los Angeles Pierce.

Three key players, point guard Rebecca Griffin (flu), Ja¹Lisa Gatlin (flu) and Destinee LaFountain (sprained ankle), missed practice today.

"If they can walk, they¹re playing," said Ventura coach Ned Mircetic. "That's why they sat around today."

The young Pirates (15-8, 4-0) are rounding into form, winning five straight games and 10 of 12 to rise to No. 8 in the Southern California coaches' poll ahead of the trip to No. 15 Pierce (12-7, 2-1).

Ennis suspended tonight

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

James Ennis will not make the trip to Santa Barbara City tonight with the rest of the Ventura College men's basketball team.

The sophomore star will serve a one-game suspension after being ejected Wednesday night against Moorpark after receiving two technical fouls.

Ventura coach Will Cowen grudgingly accepted the decision.

"Even if the commissioner wanted to," said Cowen, "he doesn't have a mechanism to rescind a technical foul."

Perhaps more importantly, WSC commissioner Jerry White determined the ejection was not a decorum violation, which means Ennis is not a strike away from being suspended for the rest of the season.

Midway through the first half, Ennis was teed up for apparently pushing Moorpark's Jamal McClerkin. Cowen said game film proved there was no push. White said the film was "inconclusive."

"We have two categories, verbal and physical abuse," said White. "The first (technical) does not appear to fit either one of those categories."

Three county stars have been named to this year's All-California teams by the California Community College Football Coaches Association.

Ventura College running back Michael Davis and defensive end Jon Lattimore were named Region IV first-team All-California.

Davis, a Buena High product, was selected as an all-purpose performer after piling up 1,658 yards in all-purpose yardage as a sophomore. Lattimore was fourth in Southern California with nine sacks.

Moorpark College receiver Chris Gant was named Region V first-team All-California.
Gant led Southern California with 81 catches for 1,134 yards and 17 touchdowns.

Dugandzic signs with Arizona

Ventura College punter Kyle Dugandzic has signed a letter of intent to play for the University of Arizona.

The first-team All-SCFA Northern Division punter, the Agoura High product averaged 38.2 yards per punt with a long of 55, placing 21 of his 57 punts inside the opponents' 20-yard line with just two touchbacks.

Dugandzic, who also handled some kicking and kickoff duties during his two-year career, was named SCFA Northern Division Special teams Player of the Week twice as a sophomore.

Dugandzic was on campus this week during the nationally-televised memorial for those killed in last weekend's shooting in Tucson.

"I tried getting in line (for the memorial) about 2:30 p.m. and it was about a mile long," said Dugandzic.

He will compete for all three kicking positions in Tucson.

"Right now, everything is open," said Dugandzic. "I could win the spot at punting, kickoff and field goals. It just depends on how everyone does in the spring and summer."

Former Fusion Farfan selected in MLS SuperDraft

University of North Carolina midfielder Michael Farfan Wednesday became the most recent former Ventura County Fusion player selected in the Major League Soccer draft.

The Philadelphia Union selected the former U.S. youth international in the second round, with the 23rd overall pick.

Farfan, a two-time NSCAA first-team All-American as a Tarheel, made 22 appearances with the Fusion in 2007 and 2008, scoring five goals and assisting on two others.

Getting a lift off the bench

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

The first player off the bench has meant first-place starts for the two teams leading the Western State Conference.

The Oxnard College men's basketball team and the Ventura College women's basketball team sit atop the standings as the only unbeaten teams remaining in WSC North play.

Both have been boosted by fresh rotations in recent weeks that have seen one of their top players become the first player off the bench.

The No. 15-ranked Condors (10-6, 2-0) won at defensive WSC North champion Cuesta Wednesday night to improve to 10-2 with freshman guard Marcus Falley coming off the bench.

"He's put aside his game for the betterment of the team," said Oxnard coach Jason Cunningham. "Like Lamar Odom, he understands and accepts that role and it's made the difference in the team."

Falley, who averaging 18.2 points per game and shooting 45 percent from 3-point range, looked like Kobe Bryant in Odom's role Wednesday, when he stroked 7 of 11 from 3-point land, including a few over double teams and at NBA range, in a 32-point performance.

He has scored 20 or more points in six of his last eight games.

"This is my first time coming off the bench like this," said Falley, "but it's been helping the team. As long as it helps, I'm happy."

No. 12-ranked Ventura (14-6, 3-0) has won six of seven games by an average margin of 23.2 points since freshman Ja'Lisa Gatlin became the sixth woman. The Pirates only loss in that span was an overtime defeat to the No. 1 team in the state, San Bernardino Valley.

"She gives us a little more firepower coming off the bench," said Ventura coach Ned Mircetic. "I think we get a little bigger, a little stronger."

Gatlin, who averages 7.9 points and 7.2 rebounds, is shooting 57 percent in her new role. She's made 17 of her last 19 shots in 18-point and 20-point performances in the past week.

"I just feel like I see the game better," said Gatlin. "When the game starts, I see what has to be done and I just do it."

Marcus Falley in demand

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

Marcus Falley, a freshman from Las Vegas, is being recruited by several Division I schools, including Creighton, Eastern Kentucky, UC Riverside, UC Irvine and UC Santa Barbara.

"He's a qualifier so he might not be here next year," said Cunningham. "If he stays it'll be because he wants to be around these guys, but he doesn't have to stay."

OC women making due

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

Without four starters, the Oxnard College women's basketball team (5-8) somehow the lead for much of the game Wednesday before falling to 0-2 in WSC North play with a 66-61 loss at Cuesta.

"Considering everything that's happening, we had our chance to win," said Oxnard coach Phil Sherman. "It would have been one of the better wins I've ever had."

A promising season has taken a turn for the worst as the backcourt of Courtney Robbs and Mariah Ladd have quit the team, leading-scorer Nikki Tauau has temporarily left the team because of a family issue and guard Samantha Strang has suffered a sprained ankle.

Tauau, who has averaged 15.1 points and 7.9 rebounds, is out of state caring for her ailing grandmother.

"She's hurting right now and she's trying to deal with it," said Sherman. "We're expecting her back, but we're not exactly sure when."

The silver lining has been 5-foot-9 freshman Darnisha McGee, who has averaged 22.5 points and 16.0 rebounds in WSC North play.

Ennis could sit Saturday

The Ventura College men's basketball team could be without star James Ennis Saturday at Santa Barbara City.

The Ventura High product was whistled for his second technical foul with seven minutes to play in Wednesday's win over Moorpark.

Depending on the nature of the technicals, Ennis may have to serve a one-game suspension Saturday.

"Three different things could happen and I'm hoping it's not the worst of them," said Ventura coach Will Cowen Thursday.

Men's schedule, 5 p.m.
Ventura 78, Moorpark 68 FINAL On a night when the teams' stars James Ennis, Coltrane Powdrill and Jamal McClerkin combined to go 72 minutes without scoring their first points, the Pirates' frontline of Mike Melonas and Chicagoan freshmen Deon Garrett and Corey Hall combined for 39 points. Powdrill led Moorpark with 24 points, all coming in the final 15 minutes.
Oxnard 94, Cuesta 82 FINAL The Condors move into sole possession of first place behind 32 points (and 7 3s) by Marcus Falley. With just its second win at SLO in eight rips, Oxnard held Cuesta star Malte Kramer to 13 points
Santa Barbara City 66, Los Angeles Pierce 56 FINAL

Women's schedule, 7 p.m.
Ventura 68, Moorpark 45 FINAL Destinee LaFountain had 19 points nad 25 rebounds. LaFountain's 25 rebounds -- 12 offense and 13 defensive -- were the most pulled down by a Pirates' player in coach Ned Mircetic's 21-year tenure. The figure is second best figure in school history behind a 29-board night by Chris Royer in 1990. Ja'Lisa Gatlin had 18 points and nine rebounds and Rebecca Griffin added 10 points for Ventura (14-6, 3-0), which led its cross-county rival 25-20 at the half. Moorpark was led by 19 points from Ashley Samson.
Cuesta 66, Oxnard 61 FINAL Condors holding Cougars to 13-of-44 shooting in the opening 20 minutes.

Raiders have a future, and maybe even a present

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

The short-term nature of two-year college athletics almost ensures that community college basketball has a year-to-year cycle.

But it's really difficult to watch the Moorpark College men's basketball team and not imagine the type of team it can become in the long term.

With a backcourt of Jamal McClerkin and Coltrane Powdrill, who are combining to average nearly 40 points per game, shooter Tarek Fattal, who had four big 3s in Wednesday's 84-78 win over Santa Barbara City, hustling role players like guard Greg Parker and forward Toki Oshodi and forward Alex Romero, who is averaging 11.2 points and 6.9 rebounds, the Raiders have a strong Class of 2012.

"We have the makings of something really special here," said Powdrill.

But the Raiders aren't willing to just look to next year.

"I really want to get the most out of both seasons," said McClerkin, the point guard from Chaminade. "We can do a lot of things this year."

Moorpark (6-9), which improved to 1-0 in the WSC North Wednesday, may be improving fast enough to give teams like Ventura and Oxnard a run this season.

"We're right there knocking at the door," said coach Remy McCarthy. "We're not freshmen anymore. We're not make the same mistakes we made earlier in the season."

Bucking Brahmas

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

Despite losing its first eight games, Los Angeles Pierce (4-10, 1-0) may be the wild card in the WSC North men's basketball race.

After upending defending champion Cuesta 72-68 in San Luis Obispo Wednesday night, the Brahmas are now 4-2 since point guard Torey Phillips returned from injury.

Phillips' return didn't just return Pierce its creative influence, it also allowed guard Chris Smith to move over to his more natural shooting guard position.

"Now we've got two very good ball-handlers on the court," said Babayan. "The pieces have started falling into the places that they were suppose to."

Pierce welcomes Moorpark to Woodland Hills Saturday night for a battle of two of the division's 1-0 teams. It's always fun between the local rivals, who met up in the Southern California regional quarterfinals last season with Pierce prevailing 71-60.

"Pierce-Moorpark is always a war," said Babayan. "From what I understand, our football programs don't like each other, our volleyball programs don't like each other. There's not too much love lost."

Cuesta reeling

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

Meanwhile, defending champion Cuesta (9-9, 0-1) is reeling after losing not only its opener, but starting point guard Casey Rogers, who has returned home to Billings, Mont.

"I can't believe the loss of one player has changed the chemistry of the whole team," Cuesta coach Rusty Blair told the San Luis Obispo Tribune Thursday. "But it has, and it shouldn't."

The Cougars, now 0-3 without Rogers, visit Ventura Saturday.

Community night in Oxnard

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

The Oxnard College basketball teams will open their WSC North campaigns Saturday night by celebrating "Community Appreciation" night.

The school announced this week that "students, clergy, school personnel, community organizations, fire, medical and police personnel will be admitted free with some form of identification."

Tipoff for the men's game against Hancock is 5 p.m. with the women's game to follow.

Ennis leads VC men

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

Behind James Ennis' 25 points, the Ventura College men's basketball team opened WSC North play Wednesday with a solid 70-55 win at Hancock,

The sophomore from Ventura High had 18 points in the second half as the 13-5 Pirates' surged

"We got a lot of easy shots," said Ventura coach Will Cowen. "The impressive thing is James scored 25 points on only 13 shots."

Ventura now looks ahead to a visit from Cuesta Saturday and high-scoring German shooter Malte Kramer, who made face off with Ennis.

"I think they're going to be going head-to-head at times," said Cowen. "It depends on which lineup we have in. It should be interesting."

"Cuesta is going through some renovations with their personnel, so we don't know what they're going to do."

Straight shooting

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

The Ventura College women's basketball team started strong Wednesday with a 89-68 win at Hancock noteable for the Pirates' first shooting performance of the season better than 50 percent.

"Really?" said Ventura coach Ned Mircetic. "That's what I like to hear."

Led by Destinee Lafountain's 11-for-18 shooting for 24 points, Ventura was 35 for 69 from the field.

"We definitely did play better," said Mircetic. "We're getting more and more comfortable.... We'll see how it goes through the rest of the year, but it's definitely moving in the right direction."

Raiders crashing the boards

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

The No. 15 Moorpark College women's basketball team opened WSC North play Wednesday with a statement, beating No. 12 Santa Barbara City 78-66.

The win was even more impressive considering the Raiders outrebounded Santa Barbara just a week after 6-foot-1 starting center Irene Lopez and 5-11 reserve Sarah Godfrey, who combined to average 14.5 rebounds per game, left the team.

It took a team effort, as forwards Kally Panek and Aisha Chambers had a team-high seven rebounds, guard Charnae Thomas pulled down six rebounds and guards Chelsea Smith, Sidney Dobner and Deepika Kapil had five rebounds apiece.

Smith also added six steals.

"We worked hard in practice and it showed on the court," said Kapil after the game.

SBCC's Amenta concussed, expected to be OK

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

Santa Barbara women's basketball forward Brooke Armenta, whose 24-point performance kept the Vaqueros in the game Wednesday at Moorpark, suffered a scary injury taking a charge in the final moments.

Amenta suffered a grade two-concussion and was transported to Los Robles hospital, according to Santa Barbara coach Sandrine Roche-Krul.

But the 5-foot-11 forward from El Camino High is expected to recover. The Vaqueros have a bye Saturday before hosting Pierce Wednesday.
