Veteran Condors soaring

When the score got tight and the match got physical Tuesday night in Santa Barbara, Ross Greaney had 14 reasons to believe.

"You don't go to Santa Barbara and get a win unless you have experienced guys who know what they're getting into," said the Oxnard College men's soccer coach.

Behind 14 sophomores, including seven returning starters and four starters from previous seasons, the experienced Condors opened the defense of the Western State Conference title with a clear statement of intent.

"It's definitely the most sophomores in the history of the program," said Greaney.

Goals by Urbano Centeno and Sigifredo Torres on either side of halftime pushed Oxnard to a 2-1 win over Santa Barbara City, the No. 9-ranked team in the nation, under the lights at La Playa Stadium.

"It was a clash of two styles," said Greaney. "They're a very physical team, thankfully we were able to get ahold of the ball and do something with it... It wasn't easy."

A pair of Channel Islands High products combined for the first goal. Sophomore central defender Salvador Mendoza carried the ball through midfield, moved it wide for Centeno, who cut inside to strike a curling shot inside the far post.

Former Hueneme High star Gustavo Navarro created the second goal by racing down the wing and finding Torres, a Pacifica High product, atop the penalty area to finish. Santa Barbara used a late own goal off a corner kick to pile on the pressure, but the Condors survived.

"I wasn't surprised by the way we played," said Greaney. "But I was just glad we were able to play under all that pressure."

The lineup reads like a Pacific View League All-Decade team, from attackers like Javier Marquez (Rio Mesa), Jerry Ponce (Rio Mesa), Jesus Landeros (Channel Islands) and Daniel Hernandez (Pacifica) to the central defense partnership of Mendoza and Dago Gonzalez (Hueneme).

Oxnard (5-1-2) has now won four straight matches by 2-1 margins. It has faced three nationally-ranked foes, suffering its only loss of the season 5-3 to No. 4 Cerritos.

"There's a long way to go," said Greaney.

Showing signs

It's taken the first month of the season, but coach Sean Roche thinks the Moorpark College men's soccer team may be ready to turn the corner.

Saul Navarro opened the scoring and goalkeeper Jose Gomes made several key saves as the Raiders (1-5-1) opened WSC play Tuesday with a confidence-building 1-1 draw against visiting Hancock.

"It's never easy to dig out from a 1-5 record, but I think we have the character to do it," said Roche. "They have the potential to be very creative and to be a good team, it's just taking us longer than we would have liked."

The sophomore core includes defender and captain Edwin Rivas, midfielder Juan Herrera (Simi Valley) and striker Matt Abraham (Simi Valley). Influential newcomers include fullback Don Kreitz (Grace Brethren), skillful winger Jose Mora and talented defensive midfielder German Vizcarra

"We have good technical ability," said Roche. "It's about making that step into that more competitive environment."

Near miss for OC women

Brittany Dubin scored two first-half goals and Anilu Saldana added a late equalizer as the Oxnard College women's soccer team threatened visiting Santa Barbara City, the No. 5-ranked team in the county, in Tuesday's WSC North opener.

Despite the Vaqueros prevailing 4-3, second-year Oxnard coach Bill Propster was not disheartened.

"We would have liked to have gotten something out of the game, but we did some good things," said Propster. "We're trying to become a team that competes with the Santa Barbaras of the world, and we did."

Ashley Rodriguez and Ces Montaro created goals as Oxnard (2-4-3) jumped out to an early lead and responded to Santa Barbara's three-goal spurt just after halftime.

"We were able to create mistakes by them and take advantage of it," said Propster. "It's something we've been working on.

Special performances on both local football teams Saturday earned a pair of honors.

Moorpark College freshman David Sandler was named the SCFA Western Conference Special Teams Player of the Week award by averaging 44 yards per punt in Saturday's 24-9 win over Santa Barbara City, including two punts inside the 20-yard line.

Ventura College freshman Jordan Howard earned SCFA Northern Conference Special Teams Player of the Week honors by returning four kickoffs for 153 yards in the 31-25 overtime loss at Chaffey, including an 88-yard return that set up a touchdown. He also had a 92-yard score nullified by penalty.

CLU set for stadium debut

The Cal Lutheran football team will play its first game in its new stadium on Saturday night when it hosts Redlands in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener at 7 p.m.

The $8.9-million William Rolland Stadium still needs to pass one more inspection for the fire sprinkler on Wednesday, but CLU officials don't foresee that being a problem.

The stadium is not ready for full occupancy, so people will enter through the north gate next to the softball field rather than the stadium lobby.

No. 15 Ventura (2-1) at No. 13 Chaffey (2-1)
Grigsby Field, Rancho Cucamonga, 6 p.m.
LAST WEEK: Ventura 48, Santa Barbara City 0; Saddleback 40, Chaffey 24;
INTERNET RADIO: http://www.HomefieldSports.com
SERIES HISTORY: Chaffey won the schools' first meeting, 12-10, last year.
GAME FACTS: Ventura has placed its fate in the hands of its defense, which leads Southern California in total defense, allowing just 169.3 yards per game. Tim Hyde's group is balanced, No. 1 against the run (39.0 ypg) and No. 3 against the pass (130.3 ypg). The Pirates have allowed just 36 first downs (second) while piling up 14 sacks (third). Although Ventura has plenty to clean up, having committed the most penalties in Southern California (49) and become the least efficient offense on third down (14.3 percent). WR Tim Vizzi (23 rec., 245 yards, 3 TDs) leads Southern California in receptions. QBs Matt Koman (46-of-108 passing, 429 yards, 3 TDs) and Chase Smith (14 of 30, 174 yards, 2 TDs) are pushing each other. Chaffey is a better team on the field than on paper. QBs Jamar Calhoun (22-for-40, 216 yards, 4 TDs) and Daniel Laugen (17-of-33, 241 yards, 4 TDs, 2 ints.) have split snaps since starter Charles King (13-of-17, 156 yards, 1 TD) was injured in the opener. The top target is Alex Jeffries (13 rec., 183 yards, 4 TDs).

Moorpark (1-2) at Santa Barbara City (0-3)
La Playa Stadium, 6 p.m.
LAST WEEK: Hancock 44, Moorpark 17; Ventura 48, Santa Barbara City 0;
SERIES HISTORY: Moorpark leads, 24-13-2, in a series dating back to 1968. Moorpark won last year, 35-29.
GAME FACTS: After giving away the game last week in Santa Maria with six turnovers, Moorpark may be preparing for a sunset walk on the beach tonight. Despite the aerial connection of QB Keegan Robilotta (40-of-76, 368 yards, 2 TDs, 1 int.) and WR Pierre Hale (12 rec., 184 yards, 1 TD), winless Santa Barbara City is both second from bottom in scoring (7.0 ppg) and total offense (192.3 ypg). Moorpark is No. 6 in total defense (261.7 ypg), including No. 5 against the pass (143.7 ypg). LB Connor Benado leads Southern California in tackles for losses (7). Moorpark's aerial attack has been potent thanks to QB Nick Owens (53-of-101 passing, 712 yards, 9 TDs, 4 int.), who is No. 7 in passing and No. 8 in total offense. WR Donnel Robinson (18 rec., 363 yards, 5 TDs) leads Southern California in receiving yardage and touchdown receptions and is No. 3 in all-purpose yardage (196.3 ypg). The ground game showed signs of improvement last week behind RB William Franklin (44 att., 157 yards, 1 TD).

COMMUNITY COLLEGE FOOTBALL
No. 14 Moorpark (1-1) at No. 13 Hancock (2-0)
Righetti High, 6 p.m.
LAST WEEK: Hancock 55, Pasadena City 21; Moorpark 54, L.A. Pierce 7.
INTERNET RADIO: http://www.HomefieldSports.com
SERIES HISTORY: Moorpark leads, 14-12, in a series dating back to 1971. Moorpark won 22-21 last year.
GAME FACTS: If the numbers are correct, this one will be a tremendous matchup. Hancock's tough-and-tumble offense, which features RB Cameron Artis-Payne (37 att., 235 yards, 5 TDs), is ranked No. 3 in Southern California scoring offense (44.0 ppg) and No. 5 in rush offense (228.0 ypg). Moorpark's revitalized defense, which features DE Quen Kantaris (three sacks) and LB Connor Bernado (13 tackles, 4.5 for losses), is No. 2 in total defense (158.5 ypg), including No. 3 against the run (37.5 ypg) and No. 4 against the pass (121.0 ypg). Despite the run-first mentality, Hancock is No. 2 in passing efficiency (179.2 rating). Moorpark is No. 2 in defensive passer's rating (64.1 rating). Hancock has allowed just one sack in two games, while the Moorpark defense is No. 2 in sacks (11). Hancock leads SoCal in third-down efficiency (57.1 percent), while Moorpark leads the region in third-down defense (13.9 percent). Both offenses have been excellent in the red zone. Hancock has scored TDs on all six trips, while Moorpark is 8 for 9 with eight TDs. The Moorpark offense, featuring QB Nick Owens (33-for-65, 404 yards, 7 TDs, 1 int.), WR Donnel Robinson (7 rec., 191 yards, 3 TDs) and WR DeAndre Hutchins (7 rec., 97 yards, 3 TDs) is still coming together. Hancock's sophomores have plenty of reasons to be up for the game, considering Moorpark used Zach Shultis' last-minute field goal to halt its 13-game losing streak against the Bulldogs last year.

Santa Barbara City (0-2) at No. 17 Ventura (1-1)
The 49th annual "Big Game"
VC Sportsplex, 6 p.m.
LAST WEEK: Antelope Valley 27, Santa Barbara City 7; Fullerton 31, Ventura 7.
SERIES HISTORY: Ventura leads, 28-20-1, on the field in a series that dates back to 1963. Ventura won 45-34 last season.
GAME FACTS: The "Big Game" hasn't been so big lately, considering Ventura has won 12 of the past 13 games between the old rivals by an average margin of 22.5 points. But the Pirates can't afford to take the Vaqueros lightly, considering how they are playing offensively. In the 36-team SCFA, they are No. 29 in scoring offense (19.0 ppg), No. 36 in rush offense (25.0 ypg), No. 35 in passing efficiency (76.1 rating), No. 35 in red zone offense (one field goal in three trips) and No. 35 in total offense (229.0 ypg). But the ugliest figure comes on third down. Ventura has converted just three of 37 third downs (8.1 percent), which is dead last in Southern California. That is why the coaching staff has opened up the QB position entering three weeks into the season. Both incumbent Matt Koman (32-for-84, 248 yards, 1 TD) and upstart Chase Smith (11-of-21, 160 yards, 1 TD) will see snaps. But Ventura also needs to get Jalen Craver (23 att., 60 yards) and a running that is averaging less than a yard per carry going. Santa Barbara is also struggling to score points (10.5 ppg, 36th) and move the ball (235.0 ypg, 33rd) with QB Keegan Robilotta (27-for-50, 294 yards, 2 TDs), RB Alonzo Winn (28 att., 92 yards) and WR Pierre Hall (8 rec., 133 yards, 1 TD) and faces its toughest test yet in a Ventura defense that is No. 4 in total defense (200.5 ypg). But SBCC did score 34 points in this game a year ago.

The Moorpark College football team's impressive 54-7 win over Los Angeles Pierce saw it move up one place to No. 14 in Southern California when the California Community College Football Coaches Association's first in-season poll was release Tuesday.

Ventura (1-1) slipped three spots to No. 17 following its 34-7 loss at No. 3 Fullerton.

No. 1 Mt. SAC (2-0) remains atop the poll after it squeaked by No. 9 Canyons (1-1), which rose four spots despite the loss. Other Northern Conference teams include No. 5 El Camino (2-0), No. 6 Bakersfield (1-1), No. 13 Hancock (2-0), who hosts Moorpark Saturday, and No. 19 Cerritos (0-2).

Other Western Division teams include No. 8 Los Angeles Harbor (2-0) and No. 12 Chaffey (2-0).

Offseason study earns Mouton honors

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

Physically, Marquise Mouton may have been one of Moorpark College top defensive backs a year ago.

But his unfamiliarity with the Raiders' system kept him off the field.

A year later, the sophomore cornerback knows the defense as well as any of his teammates.

It showed Saturday in Moorpark's 54-7 win over rival Los Angeles Pierce, when Mouton's pass coverage meant a 35-yard interception return for a touchdown, three pass deflections and a SCFA Western Conference Player of the Week honor.

"With Marquise, I think it's more the mental part of the game," said Moorpark defensive coordinator Mike Stuart. "In the spring, he was there every single day. He stayed after with me and (defensive back coach Mike) Argo. He learned all the different checks.

Usually, a safety has the knowledge and perspective to make sure the defense is making the right adjustments.

"Now you hear Marquise from the other side of the field checking everything," said Stuart. "He's normally not a big vocal guy, but he's definitely becoming more of a leader by showing his action on the field."

McGilvra doubtful for Santa Maria trip

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

Marquise Mouton and Company will have to be that much better this weekend, when the Moorpark College football team travels north to visit Hancock.

There's a good chance the Raiders will be without nose guard Eddy McGilvra, who suffered a pinched nerve in his neck injury Saturday.

"I think we're going to lose McGilvra," said Moorpark coach Jim Bittner. "We're going to try to get him some rest. He's a real force inside."

The Thousand Oaks High product has four tackles, including two for losses and a sack, over the first two games. Grace Brethren product Jerry McClure is expected to deputize.

The game in Santa Maria will feature some interesting matchups.

Through two games, Moorpark is second in Southern California in total defense (158.5 yards per game), while Hancock is third in scoring offense (44.0 points) and fifth in rushing offense (228.0 yards).

Hyde points out the bright spots

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

Despite the special teams breakdowns in Saturday's 34-7 loss at Fullerton, the performance of the Ventura College defense again stood out for the Pirates.

"We played very well," said Ventura defensive coordinator Tim Hyde. "We played good football. We had a good game plan, we went in there and the kids executed it."

Through two games, Ventura is fourth in total defense (205.5 yards per game).

"Our big disappointment was not creating any turnovers," said Hyde. "We didn't give our offensive opportunities like we did against Moorpark."

The defensive line put in its second straight dominating performance.

"Our D line has kicked butt," said Hyde. "They're playing their tails off right now."

Defensive end Daniel Miller is fourth in Southern California with 2.5 sacks. Defensive tackle Bennie Theysen is seventh with four tackles for losses. Defensive end Kalvin Cruz (three and a half tackles for losses, two sacks) is right there in both categories.

Hyde also signaled out nose guard Justin Rhodes, College of the Canyons transfer Donovan Brownlee and St. Bonaventure High product Adrian Torres, who rushes the passer from defensive tackle, for their contributions as well.

Mooshagian throws a changeup

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

The reviews are a little tougher to read on the other side of the ball in Ventura, which means head coach Steve Mooshagian has been tinkering with his game plan.

"We're changing our stuff up," said Ventura head coach Steve Mooshagian. "We'll get better. We're going to try to play to the strength of the team, which is the defense."

Through two games, the offense sits 19th in scoring offense (19.0 points per game), 35th in passing efficiency (76.1 passing rating), 35th in total offense (229.0 yards) and 36th in rush offense (25.0 yards).

Ventura has thrown 62 incomplete passes through two games.

"We were forcing the ball, which isn't what the offense is designed to do," said Mooshagian. "We're putting the quarterbacks in a bad situation because of penalties.

"Sometimes in community college, you find more ways to lose than win."

Mooshagian said both sophomore Matt Koman, who has started both games, and freshman Chase Smith, who came off the bench Saturday, will play Saturday when Santa Barbara City visits the VC Sportsplex.

"We'll give them both turns this week," said Mooshagian. "We'll let both go into the heat of battle and see how it plays out."

CLU loses season opener

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

Traveling to Maxwell Field hasn't been a pleasant experience for the Cal Lutheran football team.
The Kingsmen always begin their trip confident they can emerge with a victory. But they always return disappointed by another missed opportunity.
The trend continued on Saturday as 16th-ranked CLU suffered a 24-14 loss to No. 7 Linfield in the season opener in McMinnville, Ore.
CLU dropped to 0-4 all-time on the road against Linfield.
Familiarity wasn't a problem for CLU. The Kingsmen were playing Linfield for the fourth time in their last 12 games.
CLU (0-1) will return home to play its home opener next weekend against Pacific Lutheran at Moorpark College.

CLU home opener at Moorpark College

Cal Lutheran's new stadium will not be ready in time for the football team's home opener against Pacific Lutheran on Sept. 17.

The game will be played at Moorpark College at 1 p.m.

The sidewalks at CLU's William Rolland Stadium may not be complete until Thursday at the earliest, which will not be enough time for building officials to determine whether the field and grounds can be used for a game.

CLU officials are hopeful the stadium will be ready for the first Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game against Redlands on Oct. 1. The full stadium should be ready for full occupancy by the dedication and homecoming game against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Oct. 29.

VC women's soccer up to No. 3

The Ventura College women's soccer team rose to the highest-water mark in the program's 16-year history this week when the Pirates (3-0) rose to No. 3 in the NSCAA national poll.

Ventura (3-0), the preseason No. 5-ranked team in the country, has done it by toppling the state's biggest programs.

From 1997 to 2005, the Long Beach City College and Cypress College women's soccer teams combined for nine straight state championships. Last week, the two powers combined for back-to-back losses at Ventura.

The Pirates topped Long Beach, 2-1, Thursday and Cypress, 1-0, Saturday in its annual B.K. Sports Community College Classic.

Ventura opened the season with a 7-0 win over two-time state champion DeAnza Aug. 27.

If the Pirates manage to win Friday afternoon at two-time state champion Santiago Canyon, they will have opened the season by defeating four programs who have combined to win 13 of the past 18 women's soccer state titles.

Rivalry produced tough start

It was not a Citrus Cup game for the faint of heart.

The season opener with end-of-season stakes Saturday night at Griffin Stadium featured two rough-and-tumble defenses that combined for eight sacks, 21 tackles for losses and four roughing-the-passer flags.

"It was a spirited game," said Ventura coach Steve Mooshagian.

Both defensive coordinators, Ventura's Tim Hyde and Moorpark's Mike Stuart, both preach relentless pursuit and both units were unyielding, allowing just 87 yards rushing on 65 combined carries -- an average of a sparse 1.33 yards per carry.

"We kept trying to butt heads with an eight-man front with a freshman offensive line," said Moorpark coach Jim Bittner.

Ventura's Dezerek Reed and Moorpark's William Franklin may have been more effective sprinting headlong into the fence that encircles the stadium.

"It was a battle," said Hyde.

It fittingly ended with a sack, as Ventura defensive end Daniel Miller snatched away Moorpark quarterback Nick Owens' opportunity to steal the game from the Ventura 37 with no time remaining.

It was the second straight year Ventura had held off Owens with a sack in the final moments, which wasn't lost on Miller, who told Hyde lightning was going to strike twice during the timeout before the final snap.

"Well, go get him then," Hyde told his sophomore.

Quarterbacks put forth brave face

The passing lines may have been ugly, but both quarterbacks, making their first starts for their respective teams, showed their mettle in the face of unrelenting pressure.

Owens nearly brought Moorpark back from a 21-point, third-quarter deficit by throwing for three touchdowns for the second straight season against Ventura.

"He's one of the better one's I've ever faced and I've been coaching (community college) for years," said Hyde. "He's everything you want. He's a fighter, he's a leader, he's going to compete for 60 minutes and throw great passes.

"And at this level, if you can run as well as he does, it's dangerous"

Ventura sacked Owens six times and Hyde said the figure should have been 10.

"He's so shifty," said Hyde. "Our whole attack was to go after him."

"His escape dimension and ability to find a receiver made them go," said Mooshagian

Quarterback Matt Koman, starting his first game for Ventura, suffered a shoulder injury and only missed a single play in the third quarter. Chase Smith, a freshman from Buena High, spelled him for one play before Koman returned to guide a key scoring drive.

"He's a tough son of a gun," said Mooshagian of Koman. "You had two really tough quarterbacks in that game."

Turning the tables

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

One year after allowing a series of defensive touchdowns in its five losses, the Ventura College football team opened the season by scoring 28 of its 31 points on returns.

"We got after them on defense," said coach Steve Mooshagian. "Not everyone can make those plays. Those aren't typical fumble recoveries."

Perhaps the play of the night was made by Ventura linebacker Marc Palacios, whose diving, rugby-style lateral set up Miller's 45-yard fumble return which put the Pirates up 20-7 in the second quarter.

"Give them credit," said Bittner. "They scooped and scored. That's something you coach."
Miller, who also scored one touchdown as a freshman, entered the season looking for two.

"One more," said Miller after the game.

Taking blame

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

After reviewing film Sunday, both head coaches accepted blame for the poor offensive production.

Mooshagian called his game plan "very conservative" and "very basic."

"I toned it way down because I wanted out kids to go out there and not think, just play hard," said Mooshagian. "I blame a lot of it on me. It was too conservative of a game plan. I underestimated their defensive front."

Bittner called the film "a comedy of errors."

"I thought we gave the game away with our fumbles, but we also made a lot of little mistakes with our blocking," said Bittner. "It wasn't that we were outmanned. We weren't in the right places. We'll get that taken care of."

Sandler booming

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

Perhaps the most underrated performance of the night came from Moorpark punter David Sandler, who boomed nine punts for an average of 45.9 yards and hit a long of 59.

"The field position he provided was a huge thing," said Ventura coach Steve Mooshagian.

The former Calabasas High quarterback rolled a pair of punts inside the Ventura 2 in the first half. The first helped set up Moorpark's first touchdown.

"He had good English," said Mooshagian. "He looked like Tiger Woods out there.

Ventura punter Joe Reynoso also had a good night, punting nine times for a 39.3-yard average.

Errant kicks

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

Conversely, it was not a good night to be a kicker.

Both teams botched a pair of extra points. Ventura's Jalen Craver returned the opening kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown. Ventura's Drek Reid returned a blocked PAT for a two-point conversion, which was a big play considering it extended the VC lead from three to five with 4:33 left.

Ventura's Carlos Luna did convert a 21-yard field goal.

Still unbeaten

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

Ventura College football coach Steve Mooshagian improved to 3-0 in rivalry games at Ventura Saturday, following last year's sweep of Moorpark and Santa Barbara City.

But it wasn't without some kind words for his neighbors.

"They're a way better football team than they were a year ago," said Mooshagian. "They've improved by leaps and bounds.

"If they can sustain that and play at that level, I can see them winning plenty of games."

-- Jalen Craver, a freshman running back from Irvine Woodbridge High, returns the opening kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown to give Ventura an early 7-0 lead at Griffin Stadium.
-- That's followed by seven three-and-outs in eight possessions by the two offenses. Only a Craver 8-yard run is the lone offensive first down of the first 10 minutes. Moorpark goes the first quarter without a first down. The defense are dominating as expected.
-- On the first play of the second quarter, the ball pops out on a promising Moorpark run and Ventura CB Jordan Howard scoops and scores for a 55-yard fumble return.
-- Moorpark stops Ventura three and out on its own goal line. Donnell Robinson, who dropped a potential TD pass in the first quarter, capitalizes by returning the punt to the Ventura 31 and reeling in a 31-yard TD pass from Nick Owens to pull the Raiders within 13-7.
-- Moorpark halted a Ventura drive to the M26 and picked up a pair of third-down conversions to move into VC territory, but Owens is strip sacked and Marc Palacios returns the fumble 38 yards for a touchdown, following a heads-up lateral by Daniel Miller.
Halftime stats: Moorpark is outgaining Ventura, 91-68. Owens is 11-for-21 for 80 yards and the 31-yard TD to Robinson. Koman is 13-of-23 passing for 49 yards. Franklin has carried eight times for 13 yards. Craver has carried eight times for 16 yards.
-- RB Larry Looney is stripped in a pile for Moorpark's third fumble of the game. LB Trashaun Nixon recovers at the M22. On the next play, QB Matt Koman hits WR Tim Vizzi in the back corner of the end zone for a 22-yard TD pass and a 26-7 lead.
-- Owens hits Franklin to convert a third and 15, hits Robinson for a 45-yard gain to the V1 and floats the ball up for DeAndre Hutchins for a 5-yard TD pass to pull Moorpark within 26-13.
-- On third and 1 from the V29, Koman fumbles an exchange and DE Quen Kantaris recovers for Moorpark on the V24. Owens hits Tanner Moe for a third-down conversion to the V2 and, on the next play, Langston Jackson pushes in from the 2 to pull Moorpark within 26-20.
-- Ventura converts a fourth and 1 at the M11, but the Moorpark defense holds. Carlos Luna chips in a 21-yard field goal to push VC ahead 29-20 with 6:58 to play.
-- Owens moves the chains three times, then hits Hutchins for a 13-yd TD to pull Moorpark within 29-26 with 4:33 to play. The extra point is blocked and returned by Ventura's Drek Reed for a conversion, 31-26 VC.

No. 14 Ventura (0-0) at No. 15 Moorpark (0-0)
44th Citrus Cup game
Griffin Stadium, 6 p.m.

INTERNET RADIO: http://www.HomefieldSports.com
LAST YEAR: Ventura 5-5, Moorpark 7-4.
SERIES HISTORY: Ventura took a 22-21 lead in the series, which dates back to 1968, by the margin of its 44-21 win a year ago.
GAME FACTS: Antavius Sims and Chris Gant are gone, but the former Ventura and Moorpark offensive stars may have graduated at just the right time, considering the defenses that will be lining up in the season opener. Moorpark returns six starters and adds Division I transfers Cory Elmore (Arizona) and Quen Kantaris (Army) to its defensive line. Ventura's defensive front returns linebacker Trashaun Nixon, defensive ends Daniel Miller and Kalvin Cruz, and adds four-year transfers Masi Tuitama (BYU) and Marc Palacios (Humbolt State) to its LB corps. New quarterbacks Matt Koman (Ventura) and Nick Owens (Moorpark) take over new offenses with plenty of fresh faces. RT Kenston Redfern returns to lead an offensive line believed to be the biggest in school history. After winning just three of the previous 21 meetings from 1986 to 2008 to cede Moorpark the series lead, Ventura has won the last three matchups, 35-13, 41-28 and 44-21, to regain the edge, 22-21. Moorpark will be celebrating its 18 bowl teams, including the 2010 Western State Bowl champs, at halftime.

The Moorpark College football team invites players and coaches from its 18 bowl teams to attend tonight's Citrus Cup game against rival Ventura at Griffin Stadium.
