COMMUNITY COLLEGE FOOTBALL
No. 11 Ventura (4-3) at No. 5 Hancock (6-1)
Righetti High, 6 p.m.
INTERNET BROADCAST: http://www.HomefieldSports.com
LAST WEEK: Ventura 13, Bakersfield 0; Hancock 34, Canyons 27
SERIES HISTORY: Hancock leads, 16-15, dating back to 1954. Ventura won 48-19
last year.
GAME FACTS: A pivotal game in the SCFA Northern Conference should be decided when Hancock has the ball. The Bulldogs rank No. 4 in scoring (37.4 ppg), No. 2 in rushing (215.9 ypg) and No. 1 in passing efficiency (159.0 rating) in Southern California. The key figures are bulldozing RB Cameron Artis-Payne, who is No. 2 in rushing (145 att., 890 yards) and No. 4 in scoring (13 TDs) and downfield playmaker Shane Henderson (35 rec., 691 yards, 9 TDs). Meanwhile, Ventura, coming off its first shutout of Bakersfield in 71 years, is No. 3 in scoring defense (19.7 ppg), No. 4 in total defense (274.9 ypg), No. 2 against the run (67.9 ypg) and No. 1 in sacks (33). LB P.J. Gremaud (9.0 tackles per game), DL Daniel Miller (7.5 sacks), DT Bennie Theysen (11.5 tackles for losses) and CB Drek Reed (10 passes defended) are all among the Top 10 in their statistical categories. The teams are both in the Top 5 in turnover margin. Hancock is plus 13 and Ventura is plus 7. Ventura's Jordan Howard leads Southern California in kickoff returning with a 32.6-yard average, while Hancock's Bobby Collins (16 ret., 480 yards, 2 TDs) is No. 5. Ventura's offensive numbers remain dull, but the unit has been much more effective since the coaches turned to QB Chase Smith (48-of-90 passing, 566 yards, 4 TDs) and backfield committee earlier this month.

No. 13 Chaffey (4-3) at No. 16 Moorpark (4-3)
Griffin Stadium, 6 p.m.
LAST WEEK: Long Beach City 35, Moorpark 12; Chaffey 16, Los Angeles Harbor 13 (OT)
SERIES HISTORY: Moorpark leads, 3-1, after winning two dramatic games last year, 24-21 in conference play and 21-14 in the Western State Bowl.
GAME FACTS: After two dramatic wins over Chaffey last year, both on last minute Zach Shultis touchdown passes, who knows what these two teams have in store for fans tonight. Half of Chaffey's wins have come in overtime against Ventura and Los Angeles Harbor. Moorpark was bound for first place last weekend before allowing 28 points in the fourth quarter at Long Beach. Despite the meltdown, Moorpark remains No. 3 in total defense (273.1 ypg), No. 1 against the pass (159.3 ypg) and No. 2 in defensive passing efficiency (94.0 rating). Moorpark opponents have only converted 22.9 percent of third downs, the best figure in the region. S Shane Toth and LB Niall Padden are averaging 7.4 and 7.2 tackles per game, respectively. DLs Quen Kantaris and Mason Huether have four sacks each. S Joey Eckert has three interceptions. QB Nick Owens (117-of-213 pasing, 1,536 yards, 15 TDs, 5 ints.) and WR Donnel Robinson (39 rec., 722 yards, 8 TDs) remain the focal point of the offense. Moorpark PK Ed Ruhnke has converted 7 of 8 field goals. Chaffey's offense revolves around running QB Charles King (43-of-83 passing, 518 yards, 2 TDs, 2 ints.), who has returned from injury.

Surging MC volleyball slips to No. 9

Another team has slipped above the Moorpark College women's volleyball team in the Southern California coaches' poll.

Last week, it was Mount San Antonio. This week, it was Orange Coast.

The Raiders, who are surging on a seven-match winning streak, have slipped from No. 7 to No. 8 to No. 9 in the past two polls. Through no fault of their own obviously.

The Raiders have won 22 straight games during their winning streak ahead of Wednesday night's showdown at Santa Barbara City. The two teams are both 5-0 in the WSC North, having shared the division title in each of the past two seasons.

COMMUNITY COLLEGE FOOTBALL
No. 8 Bakersfield (3-3) at No. 19 Ventura (3-3)
VC Sportsplex, 6 p.m.
LAST WEEK: Hancock 35, Bakersfield 28; Cerritos 31, Ventura 24
INTERNET RADIO: http://www.HomefieldSports.com
SERIES HISTORY: Bakersfield leads the series, 24-5-1, in a series
dating back to 1932. Last year, the Renegades won 27-24 in overtime at
home.
GAME FACTS: This may serve as an elimination game after both teams dropped their Northern Conference openers last week. Ventura remains
No. 5 in total defense (284.3 ypg), No. 3 against the run (75.0 ypg)
and leads Southern California with 28 sacks. Meanwhile, Bakersfield
has struggled protecting its passers, allowing 22 sacks. LB P.J.
Gremaud is averaging 10.2 tackles per game, placing him in the Top 5
regionally. DE Daniel Miller and LB Donovan Brownlee have combined for
10.5 sacks. Bakersfield QB Brian Duboski (46-for-96 passing, 669
yards, 6 TDs, 5 ints.) has been inefficient since taking over the
starting job after Brian Burrell suffered a shoulder injury Sept. 17.
But RB Jalen Sykes (111 att., 509 yards, 2 TDs) and WR Brandon Hobdy
(26 rec., 423 yards, 4 TDs) are powerful weapons. The red zone will be
a concern for VC. Bakersfield is one of the best in Southern
California, having scored on 15 of 17 red-zone possessions, including
13 TDs, while only allowing 10 TDs in 21 chances, defensively. Ventura
has scored just 10 TDs in 20 red-zone possessions while allowing
points on 15 of 16 trips, defensively. Both teams are among the Top 10
in turnover margin, having forced 13 takeaways each. Ventura CB Jordan
Howard has been a weapon on special teams, averaging 13.0 yards per
punt return and 32.6 yards per kickoff return.

No. 9 Moorpark (4-2) at Long Beach City (2-4)
Veterans Stadium, 1 p.m.
LAST WEEK: Long Beach 31, L.A. Harbor 28; Moorpark 31, Antelope Valley 24
SERIES HISTORY: Moorpark leads the series, 3-2. The Raiders won 34-0 last year.
GAME FACTS: This could develop into a quarterback shootout between Long Beach's Ryan Craighead and Moorpark's Nick Owens. Craighead
(148-of-263 passing, 2,066 yards, 20 TDs, 9 ints.) leads Southern
California in passing and is No. 2 in total offense (335.7 ypg). WR
Travon Payne (34 rec., 574 yards) has scored seven times in four games
and WR Willie Bobbitt (43 rec., 519 yards, 6 TDs) is averaging a TD
per game. QB Nick Owens (93-of-174 passing, 1,279 yards, 15 TDs, 4
ints.) has been near flawless in Moorpark's three-game winning streak
and has his own dynamic WR duo in Donnel Robinson (32 rec., 654 yards,
8 TDs) and DeAndre Hutchins (23 rec., 329, 5 TDs). Craighead will have
to deal with a Moorpark defense that is tops in Southern California
against the pass (132.2 ypg) and on third down (22.3 percent). The
Raiders are No. 3 in total defense (251.3 ypg) and No. 6 in scoring
defense (20.3 ppg). While Long Beach has attempted the least amount of
running plays in the region, Moorpark RB William Franklin (83 att.,
354 yards, 3 TDs) heads up a four-pronged ground attack. Moorpark P
David Sandler (40.3 ypp) is No. 4 in punting.

MC women's cross country ready for WSCs

Returning four scorers from the team that finished sixth in the state a year ago, the Moorpark College women's cross country team may have had designs on breaking up Glendale College's six-year Western State Conference run and competing for the state title.

"I like (competing with Glendale) because it always gives us that goal, that team up there to chase," said coach Traycie Kephart. "I know that year that we do beat them our team is going to be a top contender for state."

But, despite losing sophomore Nicole Rietveld for the season to a leg injury, the Raiders enter championship season strong.

"The potential was there with (Rietveld) in top condition, but our team is still pretty strong," said Kephart. "It's a good team and it's still going to be good next year, too."

Moorpark prepared for Tuesday's Western State Conference championships in San Luis Obispo over the weekend by finished fourth in the Mount San Antonio Invitational, trailing only Glendale, Mount SAC and Pima (Az.).

Moorpark has been led by sophomore Andrea Barrera, a Fillmore High product who finished 11th in the state a year ago.

"She's a smart athlete," said Kephart. "She takes really good care of herself and she gets better as the season goes on."

A pair of freshman, Simi Valley High product Megan McNally and Newbury Park High product Clarissa Wentworth, have shown the potential to run alongside Barrera.

"Megan is a bulldog, she gets out there and she fights," said Kephart, who remembered McNally racing out ahead on the Santa Barbara sand at the WSC Preview meet. "She went out there aggressively. That's her mentality."

Freshman Emily Kelly has surprisingly given a veteran Moorpark team three freshmen among its Top 4.

"It's what you hope for," said Kephart. "You always want to bring in some freshman up there with your top returners. That keeps your program strong each year."

Sophomores Alexis Pichardo (Moorpark) and Ashley Hamilton (Simi Valley) round out a balanced and deep team, which expects to compete with host Cuesta for second place in the conference finals Tuesday.

Greater Graper

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

The Ventura College men's water polo team is picking up steam behind freshman Zach Graper.

The Royal High product earned Student-Athlete of the Week honors for both Ventura College and the Western State Conference by scoring 29 times as the Pirates swept four matches at the Cuesta tournament over the weekend in San Luis Obispo.

"He's found himself in the situation where he's had the green light for much of the year, a lot out of necessity, and he's found a way to score," said Ventura coach Mark Schmidt. "He's taken advantage of the opportunity."

Graper has 70 goals in 16 games for Ventura (8-8), which has won eight of its past 12 games.

Graper piled up 11 goals in the 15-12 opening win over Sierra.

"We don't have the traditional primary center forward," said Schmidt. "We rely on post ups and matchups to get goals.

"He's real skilled at drawing fouls and earning 5-meter shots... He's got a real good shot, which developed quite a bit over the summer."

Graper added nine in the 16-14 win over Cabrillo, three in the 18-8 win over Ohlone and six in the 17-4 win over Santa Rosa.

"I've never seen a (four-game) stretch like that for sure," said Schmidt.

Sandler honored again

Moorpark College punter David Sandler has been named SCFA Western Conference Special Teams Player of the Week for the second time this season.

The sophomore from Calabasas High had six punts for a 39.3-yard average in the Raiders' 31-24 win over visiting Antelope Valley Saturday, including two punts inside the opposing 20-yard line and one inside the 10.

The Moorpark College football team (4-2) leapt eight spots to No. 9 in this week's Southern California coaches poll.

The Raiders opened SCFA Western Conference play with a 31-24 win over Antelope Valley.

Ventura (3-3, 0-1) slipped six spots to No. 19 following its 31-24 loss to Cerritos. The Pirates host No. 12 Bakersfield Saturday.

The Ventura College women's soccer team (10-2) rose two spots to No. 13 in this week's national coaches poll.

The two schools to beat the Pirates, Santiago Canyon and Pierce, are No. 3 and No. 19. WSC North rival Santa Barbara City is No. 15. A California school, 12-0 Cerritos, tops the poll.

OC men's soccer still unranked

The Oxnard College men's soccer team (8-1-3) is ranked No. 3 in Southern California and No. 4 in the state, according to the coaches' association power-point system.

But the Condors still can't get any love from the national coaches' poll, which this week ranks nine California schools, including No. 11 Santa Barbara City, which trails Oxnard in the Western State Conference.

If the national coaches used the California rankings as a guide, Oxnard would be ranked No. 7 nationally.

COMMUNITY COLLEGE FOOTBALL
No. 18 Cerritos (2-3) at No. 12 Ventura (3-2)
VC Sportsplex, 6 p.m.
TWO WEEKS AGO: Ventura 31, Pasadena City 19; Saddleback 56, Cerritos 21.
SERIES HISTORY: Cerritos leads 3-1, but Ventura won 28-21 last year.
GAME FACTS: Ventura opens SCFA Northern Conference play by hosting a defending Southern California finalist. Although Cerritos has been inconsistent with a younger roster, sophomores QB Brandon Denker (43-of-80 passing, 705 yards, 11 TDs, 3 ints.) and RB Thomas Gray (81 att., 430 yards, 3 TDs) have been effective behind a big offensive line. Ventura is No. 3 in Southern California in total defense (238.8 ypg), leading the state against the run (38.0 ypg) and in sacks (27). It starts up front, where both DE Daniel Miller (5.5 sacks) and DE Kalvin Cruz (4.5 sacks) are in the Top 6 in sacks and DT Bennie Theysen and Miller are among the Top 10 in tackles for losses. The offense (297.8 ypg), conversely, has struggled, ranking near the bottom in first downs (16.6 per game), pass efficiency (84.6 rating), third down efficiency (14.0 percent), and red zone efficiency (63.2 percent). But the Pirates did show signs of improving last time out under QB Chase Smith (24-of-51 passing, 270 yards, 2 TDs), who is expected to make his first college start. WR Tim Vizzi (34 rec., 341 yards, 3 TDs) is No. 5 in receiving. RBs Victor Caro (32 att., 218 yards), Jalen Craver (56 att., 216 yards), Dezerick Reed (29 att., 100 yards) and Cleavon Barnes (15 att., 89 yards) have contributed to a busy backfield.

No. 18 Antelope Valley (2-3) at No. 17 Moorpark (3-2)
Griffin Stadium, 6 p.m.
TWO WEEKS AGO: Moorpark 39, Compton 7; Antelope Valley 31, East L.A. 17.
SERIES HISTORY: Moorpark leads 7-2 dating back to 1968, winning 26-12 a year ago.
GAME FACTS: Moorpark opens what looks like a difficult SCFA Western Division race against its first-ever football opponent. The Raiders lead Southern California in total defense (218.2 ypg) and have been especially good against the pass, leading in both pass defense (110.8 ypg) and defensive pass efficiency (74.3 rating). Opposing teams have converted a region-low 21.2 percent of their third downs. LB Connor Bernado leads the team with 31 tackles, 7.5 for losses. DL Mason Huether has four sacks. FS Joey Eckert has three interceptions. Moorpark is in the Top 8 in both scoring offense (33.8 ppg) and defense (19.6 ppg). QB Nick Owens (76-of-144 passing, 1,031 yards, 13 YDs, 4 ints.) and WR Donnel Robinson (28 rec., 566 yards, 8 TDs) have connected for more touchdowns than any other combination in the state. RBs William Franklin (68 att., 267 yards, 1 TD) and Langston Jackson (30 att., 127 yards, 3 TDs) have done the work on the ground. WR Jeremy Evans (27 rec., 318 yards, 1 TD) is Antelope Valley's all-purpose threat. QBs Cameron Coon (70-of-119 passing, 735 yards, 4 TDs) and Derrick Dison (30-of-48, 314 yards, 3 TDs) have taken turns getting him the ball, but have also combined for nine interceptions.

Moorpark still on Bittner's path

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

Jim Bittner may not be able to physically be with his team for the rest of the season. But it's impossible to strip the veteran coach's influence from the Moorpark College football team.

"We're still playing this year for coach Bittner," said defensive coordinator Mike Stuart. "Every game for the rest of the year, we're going to try to do something to honor him."

This week, as the Raiders (3-2) open SCFA Western Division play against visiting Antelope Valley at Griffin Stadium, the tribute will come in the form of an offensive play call.

"We're going to run a play that he put together 20 years ago," said Stuart. "We're going to try to make some history out of it and show our respect for him that way."

The 38-year coaching veteran went on leave for the remainder of the reason Oct. 3. Acting head coach Will Thurston said he is guiding the team along the path set forth by the program's patriarch.

"That's my role," said Thurston. "I'm trying to shepherd the team properly like Jim would have done.

"We talk about it every day in practice. Everyone is talking about coach Bittner. We're not ignoring that fact. He's with the coaches in our planning and he's with the players in their preparation."

Medical update

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

Coming off their bye weeks and readying for the opening of conference play at home Saturday, both Moorpark (3-2) and Ventura (3-2) seem in good shape physically.

Moorpark's biggest injury concerns are clearing up. Defensive tackle Eddy McGilvra, who suffered a neck stinger after making a huge impact in the first two weeks of the season, will medically redshirt and return to the team next season.

"Colorado State was in here to see him practice last week," said Stuart. "He was playing great, but he said it was just too painful. He was honest."

Backup quarterback Bryan Choto, concussed in a nasty collision in the 48-7 win over Compton Oct. 1, may be the team's only other major injury worry. Former Camarillo High star Brent Stevens, who has been playing receiver, is on alert to backup starting quarterback Nick Owens.

When Choto was hurt in the third quarter of the Compton blowout, defensive back Bo Bergstrom, who runs the scout offense, took over and threw a touchdown pass.

Clean bill of health for VC

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

Coming out of the bye, Ventura College football coach Steve Mooshagian proclaimed his team as healthy as it was entering the season opener last month.

"The best thing for us right now is we're very healthy," said Mooshagian. "We haven't had very many injuries."

Ventura has adapted to its gauntlet of a schedule by working on its depth.

"One thing I learned from a year ago is that you need to have two guys at every position to be able to withstand the schedule that we play," said Mooshagian. "I think that's going to help us, our health and our depth."

Smith to start for VC

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

It looks like Ventura will open SCFA Northern Conference play Saturday against visiting Cerritos (2-3) with a new starting quarterback.

Buena High product Chase Smith, who came off the bench to lead Ventura to a 31-19 win over Pasadena City Oct. 1, is set for his first collegiate start.

"I've given Chase more of the first-team reps," said Mooshagian. "I'm going to use them both, but Chase may start the game."

At the season's midpoint, Koman is 64-for-152 passing for 572 yards, five touchdowns and five interceptions. Smith, who is 24 for 51 with 270 yards and two touchdowns, has yet to throw an interception.

Smith, who started the season at receiver, may have a new target, as Koman is now splitting his time at wideout.

"I'm giving Matt a lot of reps at receiver, too," said Mooshagian. "Matt may start the game at receiver."

Koman played both quarterback and receiver at College of the Charleston before playing basketball at Northern Kentucky.

"He's a very good athlete," said Mooshagian. "He's a very good wide receiver. He can definitely help us there, too."

History lesson

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

His current quarterback rotation reminded Ventura College coach Steve Mooshagian of his days as offensive coordinator at Nevada. In 1996, the Wolfpack started 3-2 by rotating both Texas transfer John Dutton and junior Eric Bennett at the position.

"It ended up being a really good thing for us," said Mooshagian.

Local fans will remember Bennett as the last quarterback to lead Simi Valley High into the postseason.

Dutton, who has played 11 years in Arena football, eventually won the job and guided Nevada to the Big West title. But Bennett, who threw 12 touchdowns and just five interceptions that season, came off the bench to guide the team to a win in the Las Vegas Bowl.

"I'm going to see who has the hot hand, who's leading the team," said Mooshagian. "It's a good problem to have."

VC women's soccer takes SBCC showdown

The Ventura College women's soccer team grabbed the advantage in the Western State Conference race with yet another key win over Santa Barbara City Thursday night.

Daisy Cardona's 13th-minute goal and a tremendous team defensive effort enabled Ventura to knock off previously unbeaten and national No. 5 Santa Barbara City, 1-0, at the VC Sportsplex.

"The kids did well," said Ventura coach Steve Hoffman. "The players are stepping up to the plate right now."

Ventura took the lead in the 13th minute, when freshman striker Stephanie Hernandez flicked on a corner kick to set up fellow freshman Cardona.

The match was a meeting of two of the top teams in the country. Ventura (8-2) opened the season ranked No. 5 in the national coaches poll. Santa Barbara City (8-1) sat in that position this week.

High-scoring Santa Barbara had been averaging nearly four goals per game behind Jessica Domenchelli (nine goals, 24 points) and Katie Voss (seven goals, six assists) and hadn't scored less than two goals in each of its first eight matches.

But the Vaqueros have now lost nine straight to Ventura dating back to 2007, including seven straight shutout losses.

"We shut out their big guns," said Hoffman. "They hadn't been shut out all year, so we did well.

Santa Barbara has finished one place behind the Pirates in the WSC North for five years running.

"They're a good side," said Hoffman. "The pressure is now on them a little bit."

In opening 3-0 in WSC North play, Ventura has outscored its first three opponents 17-2. Santa Barbara City fell to 3-1.
