Cal Lutheran University will memorialize Hall of Fame manager Sparky Anderson Tuesday night at the Lundring Center on the school's Thousand Oaks campus.

The former Thousand Oaks resident, who became the first manager to win a World Series with both a National League and American League team by skippering the Cincinnati Reds (1975, 1976) and Detroit Tigers (1984) to glory, died locally in Nov. 2010.

Hosted by CLU president Chris Kimball, the event will be headlined by Alan Trammell, the World Series MVP from Anderson's 1984 Detroit team, and Angels manager Mike Scioscia

The event will include a reception with ballpark cuisine and a question-and-answer period, will begin at 6:30 p.m.

A limited number of seats are still available. Tickets are $40 and will benefit Anderson's charities of choice, CATCH and the CLU baseball program. Call 805-493-3100 or email nreynard@callutheran.edu for more information.

The Ventura College women's basketball team (3-0) climbed one spot to No. 2 in this week's Southern California regional coaches' poll.

The Pirates (3-0), who won the Vaquero Shootout at Glendale College last weekend, also rose to No. 4 in the state poll. They were ranked No. 3 and No. 9, respectively, in the preseason regional and state polls.

Moorpark (5-1) also rose three places to No. 12 in the regional poll.

OC men's soccer aims for history

The Oxnard College men's soccer team will attempt to reach the third round of the postseason for the first time in school history today.

Riding a 17-match unbeaten streak and ranked No. 20 in the national coaches' poll, the No. 4-seeded Condors (14-1-6) will host No. 12 Long Beach City (8-7-6) in the Southern California regional semifinals today at 2 p.m.

"They're a pretty good team," said Greaney. "They pack a lot of defenders and they try to counter attack."

Which is the type of opponent Oxnard and its possessing, passing style has seen repeatedly this season.

"Because it's college soccer and 80 percent of the teams do that same thing," said Greaney.

Oxnard will be without defender Salvador Mendoza, who was sent off in Saturday 1-0 win over Hancock.

The Condors' attack is led by Rio Mesa High product Javier Marquez (11 goals, four assists), Channel Islands High product Jesus Landeros (10 goals, four assists), Pacifica High product Sigifredo Torres (seven goals, eight assists) and Hueneme High product Gustavo Navarro (two goals, 10 assists).

A potential regional final trip to defending state champion and No. 1 Mount San Antonio (18-0-3), the top-ranked team in the nation, is lurking for the winner.

Now top seed, VC prepares for powerhouse

The No. 3-seeded Ventura College women's soccer team (18-3) is now the highest seed remaining in the Southern California regional playoffs after a wild Saturday that saw three top seeds eliminated.

"When I first heard that I was shocked," said midfielder Megan Erskine. "It puts more pressure on us, but that's a good thing."

VC will host No. 11 Cypress (13-4-4), a three-time state champion, for a berth in the regional finals tonight at 5:30 p.m.

The Pirates, ranked No. 13 nationally, edged No. 14 East Los Angeles 2-1 Saturday and topped Cypress 1-0 Sept. 3 on Merissa Campos' long-range strike.

"Our last game was not our best game," said Erskine. "I'm sure it was because people were nervous. But there's no reason to be nervous. We've played this team before."

All four of Cypress' wins over VC have come in the postseason.

"It's been one of those stories," said Ventura coach Steve Hoffman. "They're very physical. It's probably the toughest second-round match we've ever had."

The match will be webcast at http://www.HomefieldSports.com.

Flack, Raiders opens with familiar foe

Riding high on a 15-match winning streak, the No. 7-seeded Moorpark College women's volleyball team (20-3) will open the Southern California regional playoffs against No. 10 Irvine Valley (14-5) tonight at 6 p.m.

Moorpark has won 43 consecutive games during its streak. The last team to take a game off the Raiders? Irvine Valley during a four-game Raiders victory Sept. 23

"I don't know what significance, if any, that has," said Moorpark coach Steve Burkhart. "Other than we know we can play with them.

Sophomore middle blocker Karissa Flack, the Newbury Park High product who is being recruited by Alabama, is No. 2 in the state in both kills (364) and hitting (.463).

But middle blocker Gabrielle Luciani (Buena High) and outside hitters Brooke Mataele and Alyssa Del Sesto (Oak Park High) are just three of the Raiders who have played well during the streak.

"If they can load up on Karissa and we can go someplace else and get the ball down, that's going to make us much tougher to defend," said Burkhart.

Tickets for today's playoff matches are $8 for adults and $5 for children.

Kloppenburg fires VC women to Glendale crown

Sophomore guard Carlotta Kloppenburg made nine of 11 from 3-point land, scoring 30 points, to earn all-tournament honors as the Ventura College women's basketball team completed the first weekend of its season by winning the Vaquero Shootout at Glendale College.

Sophomore forward Destinee LaFountain had 18 points and 13 rebounds to earn tournament Most Valuable Player honors and sophomore guard Rebecca Griffin added 11 points as Ventura routed Irvine Valley, 85-55, in the title game Sunday afternoon.

"We've played two really good teams and we played about as hard as we could play at this point in the season," said Ventura coach Ned Mircetic. "We can build on this."

Ventura (3-0), ranked No. 3 in the Southern California preseason coaches' poll, scored eight of the game's first 10 points as Kloppenburg buried her first two from long range. She followed with a third to ignite a 13-0 run that began the build toward a 54-24 halftime lead.

"After I hit a couple, I just started feeling it and my teammates found me in the right spots," said Kloppenburg. "Being in rhythm and having your teammates find you is the thing."

The sophomore from Susanville, Calif. made 9 of 11 3-pointers, including 8 of 10 in the first half.

"I've come out a lot more confident this year and ready to go," said Kloppenburg.

Her 9 3s fell one short of Erika Ward's three-year-old school record. Kloppenburg was already No. 2 on the list, having made 8 3s last February at Oxnard.

"On every shot she took, she got a really good look at the rim," said Mircetic. "Every shot she took was out of our offense, so everyone contributed to her shot going in."

Irvine Valley (3-3) was led by 27 points from freshman forward Amber Wharton.

Ventura shot 31 of 60 from the field, out-rebounded Irvine Valley 42 to 25 and had 20 assists as a team, including six by Griffin and four by freshman Rian Mew.

The Pirates host their annual VC-Kiwanis Tournament of Champions this weekend, beginning Friday. The field includes No. 1 Mount San Antonio and No. 6 Canyons.

"If we play this hard and this well as a team," said Mircetic, "we'll be tough to deal with."

Moorpark volleyball seeded No. 7

The Moorpark College women's volleyball team was seeded No. 7 in the Southern California regional playoff field Sunday.

The Moorpark (20-3) will host No. 10 Irvine Valley (14-5) in the regional quarterfinals Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Moorpark has won 43 straight games during its 15-match winning streak, which began with a four-game win over Irvine Valley at Raider Pavilion Sept. 23.

Sophomore middle blocker Karissa Flack is No. 2 in the state in both kills (364) and hitting (.463).

Defending state champion Los Angeles Pierce (27-0) is the No. 1 seed.

GAME FACTS: Considering the heart-pounding, final-play conclusions to so many Ventura games this season, the season finale should be memorable. Behind QB Charles Fortis (182-for-327 passing, 2,502 yards, 20 TDs, 15 ints.) and RB Jai Steib (148 att., 815 yards, 17 TDs), Desert is scoring 39.1 points per game, the third-best average in Southern California, and is No. 7 in total offense (433.1 ypg). The Roadrunners' backs are averaging nearly five yards per carry and lead SoCal with 27 rushing TDs. Desert's massive offensive line has allowed just nine sacks all season. Ventura is No. 5 in scoring defense (22.9 ppg) and No. 3 against the run (86.1 ypg). LB P.J. Gremaud is averaging 7.8 tackles per game. DE Daniel Miller is No. 4 in SoCal in sacks (10.5) and No. 2 in forced fumbles (4). Pay attention on change of possess. Desert is No. 1 on punt returns (13.4 ypr) and No. 5 on kickoff returns (25.7 ypg). Ventura, behind Jordan Howard, is No. 4 on kickoff returns (25.7 ypr) and No. 5 on punt returns (11.3 ypr). Ventura QB Chase Smith (79-for-156 passing, 890 yards, 9 TDs, 8 ints.) has had his moments, but is still looking for consistency. WR Tim Vizzi (58 rec., 589 yards, 8 TDs) has been one of the top targets in the region. Victor Caro (93 att., 641 yards, 3 TDs) and Dezerick Reed (97 att., 467 yards, 4 TDs) have been a strong backfield combination, especially lately.

MC volleyball playing for title, history

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

The Moorpark College women's volleyball team will be playing for its fourth straight Western State Conference title tonight when Santa Barbara City visits Raider Pavilion.

But it will be playing for so much more.

After two straight seasons of splitting the title with Santa Barbara, the Raiders (19-3, 11-0) have a chance to clinch the title outright for the first time since 2008.

"Obviously, our kids are excited about it," said Moorpark coach Steve Burkhart. "Hopefully, they realize there's a difference between sharing a championship and winning it outright."

Santa Barbara (13-9, 10-1) is also Moorpark's final test before postseason brackets are unveiled Sunday and the Southern California regional playoffs begin Tuesday.

"As far as the timing of it, it couldn't come at a better time, as far as I'm concerned," said Burkhart. "It's a good team right before the playoffs. If you expect to do well in the playoffs, this is the caliber of team you expect to be beating."

There is also an element of perfection at stake. Moorpark has swept 40 straight games during its 14-match winning streak, including all 33 games in 11 WSC North matches.

Although 20 teams have gone unbeaten in WSC play since 1980, it is not confirmed whether another team has swept its conference slate. WSC sports information director Don Adams and state representative Robert Lewis couldn't immediately recall a similar situation and were hitting the books Wednesday.

Moorpark swept Santa Barbara 25-19, 26-24, 25-17 on the road Oct. 26. The past two seasons, the two teams split their WSC North meetings and the title.

"There's a lot riding on it," said Burkhart. "You're looking at the conference championship, playoff seeding, hosting a playoff game.

"I'm sure they're looking at it as a playoff game."

No catching Flack

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

Moorpark's run can be attributed the play of contributors like middle blocker Gabriella Luciani, outside hitters Brooke Mataela and Alyssa Del Sesto and setters Jessica Soprano and Taylor Fredrick around a star like middle blocker Karissa Flack, who may be the top player in the state.

The 6-foot sophomore from Newbury Park High is leading the WSC in kills (353), hitting percentage (.461) and solo blocks (61).

"I think that Karissa keeps improving, which is really nice to see," said Burkhart. "She's pretty much achieved what I expected of her this year. I just can't remember a time when one kid dominated a league like she has... Right now, it's her time."

Flack, who originally signed with Wright State out of high school, has been recruited by North Texas and Loyola of Chicago for much of the year. Local schools like Cal State Fullerton and UC Santa Barbara have contacted her recently. Alabama just visited Raider Pavilion to watch her practice.

"It started out as a trickle and now you're getting three or four calls per day," said Burkhart. "She's worked hard and she's a good student, so she's done everything she needs to do to put herself in a good position."

Raiders prepping for state meet

The Moorpark College women's cross country team finished sixth in Southern California Nov. 4 and are hoping to finish at least that high Saturday at the California Community College championships at Woodward Park in Fresno.

"You never know," said coach Traycie Kephart.

Last year, the Raiders, spurred on by freshman Andrea Barrera, saved their best performance for last and finished a surprising sixth. Barrera, now the Raiders' top runner, is aiming for a Top 15 finish,

"We're hoping to continue that this year," said Kephart. "They've been running really well at practice, which is really nice... We'll see. It's fun to see how we can continue to improve."

Rubio named WSC Athlete of the Week

Ventura College freshman Dejiana Rubio is the reigning Western State Conference Female Athlete of the Week.

A 5-foot-7 outside hitter from Oxnard High, Rubio had 26 kills for a .271 hitting percentage in two wins last week over Hancock and Oxnard. She also had 20 digs and two aces.

Hernandez named Moorpark head coach

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

Moorpark College has named longtime assistant coach Eleazar Hernandez head coach of its men's track and field team.

Hernandez has been an assistant coach for the Raiders' track and cross-country programs for 10 years, which included nine consecutive Western State Conference titles and the 2003 men's track and field state championship team.

"He has been an excellent coach and role model for our student athletes for several years," said athletic director Howard Davis.

The Camarillo High and Moorpark College product was also an illustrious runner. Hernandez was the California state men's cross country champion in 1996, when he lead the Raiders to the team title, and the 1997 state champion in the men's 10,000 meters. He remains in the school all-time Top 10 in three track events, the 3,000-meter steeplechase, the 5,000 meters and the 10,000 meters.

Hernandez was the NCAA West regional runner-up in 1998 at the University of Hawaii, Hilo.

"Eleazar's story illustrates what makes community college athletics such a valuable asset to our county," said Davis. "Upon graduation from Camarillo HS, he had no scholarship opportunities. He came to Moorpark College, worked hard in the classroom and on the track. That hard work led to a full scholarship, and eventually a college degree."

VC coach making breakthrough against familiar foes

The final weeks of the football season have played out like a "This Is Your Life" episode for Ventura College defensive coordinator Tim Hyde.

The defensive line coach at El Camino during the national championship run of 2006 and the unbeaten Mission League sweep of 2007, Hyde's defense forced three of El Camino's five turnovers in Ventura's 31-27 win at Murdoch Stadium Saturday night.

"That was huge (Saturday)," said Hyde. "That team we beat, they may go all the way."
The win earned the No. 7-ranked Pirates a berth in the Beach Bowl, sponsored by Joe Kapp Real Estate, Saturday night at the VC Sportsplex against No. 10 College of the Desert, which Hyde served as defensive coordinator from 2002-05.

"Watching Desert, that's a good football team," said Hyde. "They're big, strong, fast with a big-time quarterback and a huge offensive line.

"It's going to be a great game and for us to have it at our place is special."

Along the way to jumping out to a 17-0 lead at El Camino, Ventura stopped a fourth and 1 on its 20. Linebacker Masi Tuitama's 35-yard interception return pushed the lead to 24-7 late in the second quarter. Safety Scotty Wong's interception with 2:56 to play helped slow the Warriors' fourth-quarter comeback.

Neither Tuitama nor Wong practiced last week while nursing injuries.

Ventura finished the regular season ranked No. 5 in Southern California in scoring defense (22.9 points per game) and No. 3 against the run (86.1 yards per game). It was the second-best performance against the run in school history.

Hyde spent a half hour on the field after the game Saturday catching up with members of the El Camino coaching staff and still keeps in touch with friends on the Desert staff.

"I've known those guys 20-something years," said Hyde of the El Camino staff. "I left both places on good terms."

In good shape going forward

Ventura entered the season as a team founded on sophomores and, despite graduation, should open the 2012 season in a similar situation.

Sophomore stars like receiver Tim Vizzi and defensive end Daniel Miller and Kalvin Kruz have been standouts, but the Pirates have turned over its roster during the season. As many as seven freshmen have started the game on both sides of the ball in Northern Conference play.

"We're young," said Ventura coach Steve Mooshagian. "We actually have a lot of freshman playing. We may have as many as 60 kids return next season."

Freshmen who have emerged include starting quarterback Chase Smith, who has taken over the reins of the offense; tailback Victor Caro, who is averaging 6.9 yards per carry; linebacker P.J. Gremaud, who led the team with 62 tackles despite only playing eight games; safety Lakeith Murray, who led the team with three interceptions despite only starting the second half of the season and cornerback Jordan Howard, who is among the state leaders in both kickoff and punt returns.

Haflich, unbeaten teams frozen out by system

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

The California community college season has looked a lot like NCAA Division I football this year as two teams, one in each region, have put together impressive 10-0 seasons but yet will not be allowed to compete for the state title.

Because of the three-tiered systems employed by the SCFA and NCFA, 10-0 Riverside (ranked tied for No. 1 in Southern California) and 10-0 American River (ranked No. 3 in Northern California), who are both from their region's middle tier, were not placed in their region's playoff systems Sunday.

Former Ventura High and Ventura College linebacker Jerry Haflich is the head coach at American River.

"We're having a great time," said Haflich, who was inducted in the Ventura College Athletic Hall of Fame earlier this year. "I'm really proud of my guys. They've played their fannies."

Since giving defending state champion and top-ranked Mount San Antonio its only loss of the season, Riverside fans have called for their team to be considered for the national title, which is determined by polls.

Despite the Boise State-like situation, Haflich isn't calling for his team to be considered for playoff spot.

"Are we ready to compete for the state title?" asked Haflich. "I don't know. We haven't
been tested week in and week out like the guys in (the top tier)."

Instead, American River has applied to be promoted to the NCFA's top tier.

"If you want to play for the state title you have to jump into the conferences that are there," said Haflich. "We're preparing to take the next step and go from there. That'll take all the question marks away."

Picking up the tab

The Southern California Football Association asks its bowl hosts to search for local sponsorship to keep the schools from paying about $2,500 in bowl costs, which includes security, field preparation and team meals.

Ventura didn't have to look long for the Beach Bowl's sponsor.

"It's all about helping the college because I really believe in them," said Ventura realtor Joe Kapp, a 1970 VC graduate. "I have a lot of good memories there. I was anything but a good student and the college allowed me a place to grow up a little bit.

"It's also a fantastic place to watch a football game."

The Ventura College football team (6-4) moved up three spots to No. 7 this week in the Southern California coaches' poll.

The Pirates, who upset El Camino Saturday to earn a bowl berth, also jumped to No. 16 in the state.

Moorpark (6-4), which fell out of the state poll, is No. 14 in SoCal.

COMMUNITY COLLEGE FOOTBALL
No. 17 Los Angeles Harbor (5-4) at No. 13 Moorpark (6-3)
Griffin Stadium, 6 p.m.
LAST WEEK: Moorpark 27, Citrus 21; Los Angeles Harbor 59, Antelope Valley 52
SERIES HISTORY: Moorpark leads the series, 14-7, dating back to 1968. Harbor won, 46-14, last year.
GAME FACTS: By the time the Raiders take the field, they will know whether they will be playing for a share of the SCFA Western Conference title. Harbor features the No. 4 rushing attack (206.2 ypg) in Southern California, although RB Theron West (83 att., 554 yards, 6 TDs) has missed two of the past four games with an ankle injury. Three different RBs scored TDs Saturday, including Joron Adams, who ran 15 times for 111 yards and 3 TDs. Moorpark is No. 5 in scoring defense (21.7 ppg) and No. 3 in total defense (279.0 ypg), including No. 2 against the pass (171.0 ypg) and No. 6 against run (108.0 ypg). Moorpark is No. 1 in third-down defense (23.5 percent). The Moorpark passing attack, featuring QB Nick Owens (158-for-277 passing, 1,937 yards, 20 TDs, 6 ints.) and WRs Donnel Robinson (53 rec., 846 yards, 11 TDs) and DeAndre Hutchins (36 rec., 464 yards, 7 TDs), came alive last week with four second-quarter scoring strikes. Robinson (153.2 ypg) is also No. 4 in all-purpose yardage.
P David Sandler is No. 4 in punting (39.6 ypp).

No. 10 Ventura (5-4) at No. 3 El Camino (8-1)
Murdock Stadium, Torrance, 6 p.m.
LAST WEEK: Canyons 36, Ventura 34; El Camino 38, Hancock 14
SERIES HISTORY: El Camino has won all eight meetings dating back to 1953. El Camino won, 56-31 last year.
INTERNET RADIO: http://www.HomefieldSports.com
GAME FACTS: The right combination of results could see Ventura grab El Camino's potential berth in next week's Southern California semifinals, although winning tonight's game is the toughest. Besides the 42-21 loss to Cerritos Oct. 22, which featured an injury to starting quarterback Omar Herrera (170-for-280 passing, 2,355 yards, 15 TDs, 9 ints.), El Camino has been perfect. The Warriors are No. 1 in scoring defense (18.3 ppg) and No. 5 in passing offense (279.9 ypg). Ventura is No. 9 in scoring defense and No. 8 in total defense (323.0 ypg), including No. 4 against the run (85.2 ypg). But opposing QBs have posed a problem, especially in VC losses. Ventura is No. 30 against the pass (238.6 ypg) and allowed Canyons to drive the field in in the final minute last week. El Camino (37) and Ventura (34) are two of the Top 3 sack totals. Behind freshman RB Victor Caro (81 att., 573 yards, 3 TDs), who is averaging 7.1 yards per carry, VC's ground game is up to No. 13 (167.7 ypg). WR Tim Vizzi (57 rec., 569 yards, 7 TDs) is No. 5 in receiving. CB Jordan Howard is No. 2 in kickoff returning (28.8 ypr) and No. 6 in punt retuning (11.8 ypr).

By virtue of its win over Moorpark last month, Long Beach City has clinched a berth in the Central Division title game (likely against top-ranked Riverside). VC water polo teams earn postseason berths

The Ventura College water polo teams were both seeded in the Southern California championships Sunday. Both will open the tournament in Thursday's quarterfinals at Riverside College.

The Ventura women (17-10), which won their fourth straight Western State Conference title Saturday, were seeded in No. 9 and will face No. 8 Cypress (14-11).

The Pirates dropped a tight 9-8 loss at Cypress on the opening day of the season, Aug. 27.

The Ventura men (13-13), which finished third in the WSC, earned the No. 10 and final seed and will take on No. 7 Cerritos (19-13).

Cypress, the South Coast Conference runner-up, is coached by former VC and Ventura High coach Joe Abing. Ventura and Cerritos have split eight meetings in Abing's six years with the Falcons.

"We're definitely the underdogs, but that should be fun," said Ventura coach Mark Schmidt.

COMMUNITY COLLEGE FOOTBALL
No. 17 Canyons (3-5) at No. 9 Ventura (5-3)
VC Sportsplex, 6 p.m.
LAST WEEK: Cerritos 48, Canyons 42 (OT); Ventura 29, Hancock 28.
SERIES HISTORY: Canyons leads, 14-7. The Cougars won 37-24 last year.
GAME FACTS: Ventura is in the middle of the playoff race with two games to play. Despite its losing streak, Canyons is still dangerous. The Cougars are No. 6 in total offense (429.9 ypg) behind QB Chris Rini (92-of-166 passing, 1,273 yards, 6 TDs) and RBs Jamie Wilson (69 att., 400 yards, 5 TDs) and Matt Bown (70 att., 332 yards, 7 TDs). Former Thousand Oaks High QB Chris Owens (27-of-48 passing, 429 yards, 3 TDs), the older brother of Moorpark QB Nick Owens, has been efficient in limited opportunity. Ventura is No. 6 in scoring defense (20.8 ppg), No. 4 in rushing defense (89.1 ppg), and No. 7 in total defense (298.8 ypg). But it's the Pirates offense which is improving late in the season behind QB Chase Smith (68-of-127 passing, 785 yards, 7 TDs). After his 189-yard, 1-TD performance last week, RB Victor Caro (66 att., 465 yards, 2 TDs) leads SoCal by averaging 7.0 yards per carry. WR Tim Vizzi (53 rec., 543 yards, 6 TDs) is No. 5 in receiving. CB Jordan Howard, is No. 3 in kick returning (30.2 ypr) and No. 6 in punt returning (11.7 ypr), remains a special teams weapon.

No. 12 Moorpark (5-3) at No. 10 Citrus (5-3)
Citrus Stadium, Glendora, 1 p.m.
LAST WEEK: Moorpark 27, Chaffey 17; Citrus 24, Los Angeles Harbor 14.
SERIES HISTORY: Moorpark leads, 3-1. Citrus won Moorpark, 20-15, last year.
GAME FACTS: A game out of first place in the SCFA Western Conference, Moorpark has no room for error. It has placed its season in the hands of its defense, which is No. 2 in Southern California in total defense (267.6 ypg), No. 8 in scoring defense (21.8 ppg) and No. 1 on third down (24.6 percent). The unit has been balanced. It is No. 2 against the pass, both in yardage (163.0 ypg) and passing efficiency (95.2 rating), and No. 6 against the run (104.6 ypg). LB Connor Benado and S Shane Toth average 6.8 tackles per game. Citrus, featuring the passing attack of QB Blake Loncar (198-of-331 passing, 2,241 yards, 21 TDs, 12 ints.) and WR Kelvin Chatham (43 rec., 623 yards, 9 TDs) has won three straight. The Owls are also No. 1 in red zone defense, allowing just 15 touchdowns in 31 trips. Moorpark QB Nick Owens (131-for-233 passing, 1,658 yards, 16 TDs) and WR Donnel Robinson (44 rec., 749 yards, 8 TDs) remain the Raiders top threats, although RBs William Franklin (115 att., 417 yards, 4 TDs) and Langston Jackson (45 att., 233 yards, 3 TDs) have given the offense balance. PK Edward Ruhnke has converted 9 of 10 field goals to lead Southern California in made kicks and accuracy.

VC searches for edge to maintain WSC reign

It started the streak as a No. 2 seed. Now the Ventura College women's water polo team will work this weekend to ensure it doesn't end from the same No. 2 position.

The first women's water polo program to win three straight Western State Conference titles hopes to prolong that run at this weekend's WSC Championships at Citrus College.

The Pirates (15-10), who feature sophomores Samantha Ebberson, Raylene Morales, Jenny Paulsen, as well as freshman Anais Geysmonion, will head to Glendora with confidence, despite seeing its 19-game WSC winning streak snapped last week by Cuesta, 5-4.

"The girls look good," said Ventura coach Mary Giles. "Everyone knows their roles. We're going to be hard to beat, if we play like we've practiced."

Ventura will face No. 3-seed Los Angeles Valley (12-8) in the semifinals Friday at 12:30 p.m. It defeated the Monarchs, 11-4, on the road last month.

The Pirates responded to the loss to Cuesta by beating Pasadena and Citrus over the weekend in a tournament by a combined margin of 31-13.

"That was good," said Giles. "I think we needed it."

Searching for a winning edge in their potential title showdown with Cuesta Saturday, the Pirates opened practice Wednesday with a visualization exercise with a sports psychologist.

VC men's water polo on cusp

The Ventura College men's water polo team (12-11) will enter the WSC Championships as the No. 3 seed and will also face Los Angeles Valley in Friday's semifinals at 1:45 p.m.

"We're the No. 3 seed hoping to move up," said Ventura coach Mark Schmidt. "We're in a position to think we can compete with Valley if we can put together a full game."

Ventura lost at Valley, 11-6, on Oct. 12 and continued a string of bad luck this month when it lost freshman Cole Baratte to a shoulder injury.

"To continue our unbroken string of good luck," said Schmidt, sarcastically.

But the Pirates do still have freshman Zach Graper, who leads the WSC with 87 goals, and can keep itself in postseason contention with a win either Friday or in Saturday's consolation.

Condors earn SoCals berth

The Oxnard College women's cross country team earned one of two at-large berths into Friday's Southern California championships at Guasti Park in Ontario.

The Top 7 in the WSC earn automatic berths. Oxnard finished eighth behind Rio Mesa High product Karla Leos (18th) and Hueneme High product Cristal Gutierrez (36th), but did finish 22nd out of 34 teams on the course at the SoCal Preview last month.

"That must have been one of the considerations," said Oxnard coach Gino Sharp.
Despite being the last team into the meet, Sharp isn't settling for 28th place.

"We may be ranked last, but we're going to go out there and compete," said Sharp. "I've got my eye on several schools that we can pass."

The Condors join the Moorpark and Ventura men's and women's teams at regionals, as well as Oxnard sophomore Pepe Hernandez, who earned an individual berth.

There is a chance for some weather on the flat grass and dirt course.

"It could be wet and fun," said Sharp.

No margin for error for OC men's soccer

Once again, every point counts in the Western State Conference men's soccer race.

One year after leaders Santa Barbara City dropped points in the final week to allow chasing Oxnard to snatch the title with an 11-game unbeaten streak, the tables have turned.

Oxnard (12-1-4, 9-0-2), by virtue of taking four points in the teams' two matchups, is the leader, holding tight to a slim one-point lead over Santa Barbara City (12-1-4, 9-1-1) into the final fortnight of the season.

The Condors began its final four matches Tuesday with a hard-fought 2-1 win at Citrus, while Santa Barbara grabbed a second half goal to hold off Canyons, 1-0.

"The challenges are coming from different types of fields, different types of drives and different types of rests," said Oxnard coach Ross Greaney. "We're doing well for the soccer part. If we can focus on playing well, then everything will be OK."

The title may hinge on Friday's difficult trip to Hancock followed by Canyons' visit on Tuesday. Oxnard will be rooting for county rivals Moorpark Friday at Santa Barbara.

Wednesday's 3-0 sweep of Los Angeles Mission pushed the Moorpark College women's volleyball team winning streak to 11 matches and 31 games dating back to Sept. 21.

Behind sophomore middle blocker Karissa Flack, who leads the WSC in kills (293), solo blocks (57) and hitting percentage (.440), Moorpark has swept nine straight matches, 3-0, including last week's visit to Santa Barbara, which split the WSC North title with the Raiders the past two seasons.

Saturday night to remember for VC football

The Ventura College football team's dramatic 29-28 win at Hancock Saturday night had plenty to make it one of the most memorable games in recent school history:

The domination of the Pirates' first-half performance, when it rolled to a 21-0 lead.

The collapse of the second half, when they fell behind 28-21 with 1:40 to play.

The season-saving late scoring drive, that quarterback Chase Smith directed for 63 yards over 14 plays, including a fourth down and three third downs.

The game-turning touchdown with two seconds on the clock, when Smith hit receiver Tim Vizzi in the back of the end zone.

The decision and execution of the subsequent game-winning, two-point conversion play, which Smith ran a bootleg into the right corner of the end zone behind the pancake block of tackle Kenston Redfearn.

All after week when head coach Steve Mooshagian buried his mother, Janet.

"They rallied together and found a way to get it done," said Mooshagian. "They gave me all the strength that I needed to get through this.

Vizzi, Caro earn plaudits, honors

Along with quarterback Chase Smith's recovery from a four-interception night to execute the game-winning drive, the Ventura College football team Saturday night benefited from perhaps the best offensive performances it has seen from a receiver and a running back during the four-year Southern California Football Association era.

Receiver Tim Vizzi, the sophomore from Moorpark High, tied a school record with 12 receptions, which he turned into 149 yards and three touchdowns. All three are school's top marks during the SCFA era.

Freshman running back Victor Caro ran for 189 yards on just 19 carries, including a 6-yard touchdown run and a 71-yard run to set up another.

"Those are big-time performances," said Ventura coach Steve Mooshagian.

Vizzi, who was named the SCFA Northern Conference Offensive Player of the Week, tied Bob Kimball (1976) and Charles Dillon (2005) for the single-game reception mark. Kimball holds the school record for receiving yards in a game (263), which came in the same record-setting performance against Hancock on Nov. 13, 1976.

Caro, a Brentwood, Tenn. native whose father played for VC and Channel Islands High, earned VC Student-Athletic of the Week for his performance.

"The run he made on the sprint draw right before halftime set us up," said Mooshagian of Caro's 71-yard run on third and 11 from the Ventura 4, which set up VC's third score right before halftime.

Grinding it out

After two dramatic last-minute wins over Chaffey a year ago, the Moorpark College football team made sure to control Saturday's 27-17 win over the visiting Panthers.

One week after letting a 12-7 fourth-quarter lead slip at Long Beach, the Raiders jumped out to a 24-0 lead early in the third quarter.

"Chaffey has some skill players over there that can terrorize you if you're not careful," said Moorpark interim coach Will Thurston. "But the game seemed to be going pretty quick. Time was on our side after a while."

Possession has been emphasis for the Raiders during conference play. Moorpark hasn't lost the turnover battle since Sept. 24.

"We've been doing a decent job of hanging on to it," said Thurston. "We're a little bit more protective in the way plays are being called."

Both county community college football teams will enter this weekend a game back in the conference race with two to play.

No. 9-ranked Ventura (5-3, 2-1), stuck in the three-team 2-1 pack that includes Hancock and El Camino, hosts Canyons (3-5, 0-3). First-place Cerritos (5-3, 3-0) visits Bakersfield Saturday and hosts Hancock on the final day of the regular season Nov. 12.

No. 12-ranked Moorpark (5-3, 2-1), trailing first-place Long Beach City (4-4, 3-0) and Citrus (5-3, 3-0), visits the Owls Saturday afternoon in Glendora.

Both Ventura and Moorpark are one win away from clinching bowl eligibility.
