The road warriors known as the Ventura College men's basketball team are set for a regional semifinal at No. 4 San Bernardino Valley, the Foothill Conference champion.

At the VC Athletic Event Center, the biggest question will be the health of the state co-Player of the Year, Ventura center Destinee LaFountain, who has not practiced this week after sustaining an arm injury in the Pirates' win Saturday over Pasadena City College.

Former LaReina High legend Margaret Mohr brings her No. 10 Cypress College women's basketball team to Ventura for the third straight season to visit the second-seeded Pirates.

We'll have all the live updates here on Twitter.

The Cypress@VC women's game is being broadcasted online by HomefieldSports.com.

The second-seeded Ventura College women's basketball team (29-1) will host No. 15 Pasadena City (17-12) in the Southern California regional quarterfinals Saturday at 7 p.m.

Freshman guard Stella Ghazarian hit a 3-pointer with 12.7 seconds to play as Pasadena City came from 26 points down to knock off No. 18 Antelope Valley, 67-65, Wednesday night in the first round.

Ghazarian had 27 points, including seven 3-pointers, as the Lancers incredibly won their 17th straight playoff game at Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium despite falling behind 28-2 to start the game.

Pasadena has eliminated Ventura from the postseason in three of the last five years, 2007, 2009 and last spring, when Anna Shahinian's decisive 3-pointer with 33 seconds to play was allowed to stand, despite being released after the shot clock had expired.

It all comes down to tonight at the VC Athletic Event Center. Ventura has clinched a share of its 22nd straight WSC North title. Moorpark can earn a share by becoming the first team in those 22 years to hand Ventura a WSC North defeat on its home floor. Both teams are postseason bound, but Ventura probably needs a win to earn the No. 1 seed in the Southern California regional playoffs. If Moorpark loses, it has a chance of slipping from the high teens to the low teens, which would mean playing a first-round game Wednesday rather than earning a bye to next weekend's regional quarterfinals. Moorpark hasn't beaten Ventura since 1991, but the Raiders were 71 seconds from breaking Ventura's 46-game, 21-year hold on the rivalry Jan. 25 at Raider Pavilion.

Chun displaying many talents for Moorpark

Whether she is in the startling lineup or coming off the bench, running the point or playing on the wing, versatile freshman Camilla Chun is one of the big reasons why the Moorpark College women's basketball team is still competing with No. 1-ranked Ventura College in the Western State Conference race.

And, recently, Chun, a dominant defender who leads the WSC in steals, has added even more to the entertainment value at Raider Pavilion.

First, the Thousand Oaks High product began showcasing her singing ability alongside teammate Maya Machler during pregame renditions of the national anthem.

"She just has so many talents," said sophomore Charnae Thomas. "You never know with Camilla."

Then, Wednesday, she wrote and performed a rap to celebrate her three out-going teammates on Sophomore Night.

"That was pretty creative," said sophomore Ashley Samson.

Chun, along with her fellow freshman, performed the rhyme as poetry after the typical flowers and photographs of the season's last home game were completed.

"I love to sing," said Chun. "That's what I want to do."

A glimpse into the future

It was just a practice exercise, but men's and women's coaches both produced a preliminary projection of next week's Southern California regional playoff seedings over the weekend.

The men's coaches association was asked to use the seeding criteria to rank the final regional poll of the season. The Ventura College men's basketball team (17-11) was ranked No. 13 with a quarterfinal visit to No. 4 San Bernardino Valley on tap. WSC North foes Cuesta (22-7) and Hancock (20-9) were No. 8 and No. 14, respectively. San Francisco (25-2) and Citrus (24-1), who contested last year's state final, were the top seeds in the North and South, respectively.

Click the jump for this week's men's polls.

When one local coach calculated the women's seeding, No. 1-ranked Ventura, which has been recently edged out for the top seed by Mount San Antonio (2009) and Fullerton (2010) despite overall record and head-to-head advantages, barely nipped No. 2 Mount SAC for the top seed on a tiebreaker, despite giving the No. 2 Mounties and No. 3 San Bernardino Valley four of their six combined losses this season.

Moorpark was No. 13, only two slots from hosting a first-round game Wednesday rather than earning a bye to the weekend's quarterfinals.

With plenty of jockeying for position to go with a week's worth of games to add to the database, it looks like Saturday's WSC North title-decider between Moorpark and host Ventura will have even more riding on it.

Salaam, Griffin honored by WSC

A pair of Ventura College basketball players earned Western State Conference North Division Players of the Week awards this week.

Freshman Najee Salaam earned men's honors by pouring in 30 points and 23 points in wins over Santa Barbara City and Oxnard, respectively. In the process, the 6-foot-5 freshman, who leads the WSC in field goal percentage (59.8 percent), was 22 of 28 from the field.

Sophomore point guard Rebecca Griffin earned the women's nod by scoring 16 points on 7-of-10 shooting and adding six assists in the Pirates 76-40 win over Oxnard Feb. 8.
The WSC South women's Player of the Week was also a familiar face. Former VC guard Jausecca Cockeral earned the award after scoring 27 and 19 points in wins last week for Bakersfield College.

Flack commits to North Texas

Moorpark College women's volleyball star Karissa Flack, the Star's Female Athlete of the Fall Season, has verbally committed to the University of North Texas.

A 6-foot middle blocker from Newbury Park, Flack earned first-team All-American honors by guiding the Raiders to the WSC North title, including a two-month-long undefeated streak. The WSC North MVP finished second in the state in both kills (364) and hitting percentage (.463).

"I'm very excited," said Flack, days after returning from a visit to the Denton, Tex. Division I school. "I'm going there focused on volleyball and school. I know it's like a job."

Flack completes an eclectic recruiting that included interest from Alabama and Illinois-Chicago, as well as recruiting visits to Cal State Monterey Bay and Cal State East Bay, by committing to one of the first schools that showed interest in her this season.

Cristobal signs Division 1 scholarship

Moorpark College football safety Steven Cristobal signed a national letter of intent last week with Gardner-Webb, a Division I-FCS school in Boiling Springs, N.C.

A two-year starter at safety, the Rio Mesa High product was a second-team All-SCFA Western Division selection this fall, after piling up 56 tackles and leading the No. 2-ranked defense in Southern California with three interceptions.

The Ventura College women's basketball team is No. 1 in both Southern California and the state for the 10th straight week.

After picking up a state first-place vote last week, it appears 26-1 Ventura lost it to 24-3 Foothill this week. Foothill and San Francisco are the only two teams in the Top 7 the Pirates have yet to beat.

VC is 6-0 against the state Top 7 and 5-0 against the SoCal Top 4.

Meanwhile, Moorpark, despite another two-win week, slipped one spot in the regional poll for the second straight week to No. 14. Although the Raiders (15-8) seem on the brink of wrapping up a postseason place by winning seven of their last eight.

From the moment the final buzzer sounded, it was obvious that Saturday's 85-84 loss at Cuesta would put the Ventura College men's basketball team in a difficult position in the WSC North race

But how's this for awkward?

It's looking like the Pirates are going to have to root for rival Moorpark to upend the first-place Cougars for the second time this season Saturday in San Luis Obispo.

"I would hate to be dependant on us, if I was them," said Moorpark coach Remy McCarthy, jokingly. "But we'll give it the old college try."

Fourth-place Moorpark (7-15, 3-4) has lost three straight tough ones, but the Raiders, featuring the backcourt of Coltrane Powdrill and Jamal McClerkin, remain the only team to beat Cuesta (19-7, 7-1) in WSC North play.

Powdrill had 23 points and nine rebounds and Sahdi Odu had 16 points in Moorpark's 75-66 win over Cuesta Jan. 11 at Raider Pavilion.

Cuesta has taken command of the WSC North race in the past five days by coming from 10 points down with 3:55 to play against VC Saturday, then turning a 29-25 halftime deficit into a 60-53 win at third-place Hancock Wednesday.

"They beat us in the second half on our own home floor, and that hasn't happened in more than a year," Hancock coach Ralph Gorton told the Santa Maria Times.

If Cuesta can get past Moorpark Saturday, the three remaining teams on its schedule are the bottom three teams in the standings, Oxnard, Los Angeles Pierce and Santa Barbara City, who are a combined 1-12 against the other four teams in the WSC North.

Pirates bouncing back

Meanwhile, the Ventura College men's basketball team (14-11, 6-2) bounced back from Saturday's stunning loss by putting on an offensive show in Wednesday's 103-80 win over visiting Los Angeles Pierce, the first time this season the Pirates hit triple digits in regulation.

"We've kept (the loss) in our minds," said forward Najee Salaam, "and we bounced back."

"We've been regrouping mentally," said point guard Zalmico Harmon. "We know all the things we could have done to win that game."

Harmon, who missed a free throw with 1.9 seconds left that could have forced overtime at Cuesta, said he was in the gym to make 500 free throws both Sunday morning and afternoon.

"I know if I had made that free throw, we would have won that game," said Harmon. "But we're moving on."

Raiders on the chase

Saturday's trip to San Luis Obispo also looms large for the second-place Moorpark women (14-8, 6-1), who can all but clinch a Top 2 finish by knocking off third-place Cuesta (13-10, 5-3) on the road.

That will go a long way towards ensuring the Raiders, ranked No. 13 in this week's Southern California poll, are a postseason team, although coach Lindsay Goldblatt doesn't share the perspective.

"Not necessarily," said Goldblatt. "It still think it's kind of early to look at it that way."

The Raiders, who also have the 13th best RPI in Southern California, are focused on staying a game behind first-place Ventura (25-1, 8-0), to make sure the there's something riding on the season finale at the VC Athletic Event Center Feb. 18.

"We want to give ourselves a chance to play for first place," said Goldblatt. "That means we have to win the rest of our games, assuming (Ventura) doesn't lose. Hopefully, we can take care of business and make sure that last game has some meaning."

Breaking out

Carlotta Kloppenburg hadn't hit a shot in a week and it was wearing on her.

But the sophomore shot herself out of her 0-for-15 slump Wednesday by making six 3-pointers, scoring a game-high 20 points in the Ventura women's 93-61 win over visiting L.A. Pierce

"I think we all feel a lot better after that," said Kloppenburg.

The sophomore, who averages more than 2.5 3s per game, said she spent much of Sunday, Monday and Tuesday in the gym honing her shot.

"I just have to relax, go have fun and play," said Kloppenburg

"Everything's rolling," said Ventura athletic director Will Cowen.

The Moorpark College baseball team opens what may be its last season, due to budget cuts, today at the Bakersfield tournament.

The Oxnard College baseball team, ranked No. 20 in the Southern California preseason poll, opens at College of the Desert this morning. The Ventura College baseball team hosts No. 4 Palomar in its opener Saturday.

Saturday's shocking 85-84 loss at Cuesta, in which it allowed 11 of the final 12 points of the game, didn't just cost the Ventura College men's basketball team first place in the WSC North.

The Pirates (13-11, 5-2) slipped out of the state poll Monday. They also slid two spots to No. 12 in the Southern California regional poll.

The WSC North populates the bottom half of the regional poll. Cuesta is No. 11, Ventura is No. 12 and Hancock is No. 14.

VC, MC women still ranked

Last week's WSC North showdown had little affect on the state and regional polls.

Despite grinding out two tough road wins last week, a 4-point win at Moorpark and a 3-point win at Cuesta, Ventura (24-1) still sits atop both the Southern California regional and state polls. The Pirates actually picked up a first-place vote in the state poll.

Despite suffering only one loss, to the No. 1-ranked team in the state, over its last seven games, Moorpark (14-8) actually slipped one spot to No. 13 in SoCal.
