It's time to pay some attention to the Ventura College softball team, who have pushed its winning steak to 12 games Tuesday with a doubleheader sweep of visiting Cuesta.

"We're doing all right.," said Ventura coach Sue Johnson.

The Pirates (19-3) haven't lost since Feb. 18 to build a three-game lead in the Western State Conference's Gold Division. Their three losses have come by a combined four runs.

"So far so good," said Johnson.

Sophomore Teresa Lemos, who earned VC and WSC Athlete of the Week honors last week, is 15-2 with a 0.78 ERA and 92 strikeouts in 106 1/3 innings on the mound. The Rio Mesa High product is also hitting .438 with four doubles, seven triples and a team-high 26 RBIs.

Three other Pirates are hitting in the .400s, including sophomore infielder Raelene Moreno, who is hitting .424 with five home runs and 26 RBIs.

The Pirates, who are seventh in Southern California in RPI, put their winning streak on the line this weekend by hosting the Ventura Spring Games. Six different conferences are represented in the field, including two-time state champion and state No. 2 Cypress (20-4), former No. 1-ranked Canyons (23-2) and all three county programs.

"We have some quality teams in the tournament," said Johnson. "It's good preparation for the end of the season. We're looking forward to some good games."

VC will host Santa Ana (16-9) and Antelope Valley (12-10) Saturday at 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., respectively, as well as Mount San Jacinto (8-17) and Cypress Sunday at 10 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., respectively.

Led by slugger Janai Shaw, third baseman Dani Hernandez and pitcher Heather Bacon, Oxnard (9-13) faces Mount San Jacinto and Cypress Saturday at 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.

Moorpark (8-17-1), paced by slugging catcher Heaven Silveira, who already has five home runs this season, and speedster Amanda Chatman, faces Santa Ana Saturday at 10:30 a.m.

Four local scholar teams

The VC softball team isn't just tearing it up on the field. It was one of four local programs to earn state scholar teams last month, when the California Community College Athletic Association announced its 2010-11 academic honors.

The Ventura College women's swimming (3.20 GPA) and softball (3.11 GPA) teams earned the award, which is given to the one program in the state in each sport that best balances athletic and academic success.

"It is indeed special to have Ventura College students excel both in athletic competition and in the classroom," said Ventura College president Robin Calote in a release. "It is to the credit of both (teams) that (they) have been so successful at emphasizing the importance of academic performance as well as team success."

Moorpark College was honored in both men's track (3.01 GPA) and women's track (3.17 GPA).

"That's awesome," said Moorpark track coach Traycie Kephart. "That's what they're here for."

The awards were fitting, considering the Moorpark track teams had nine members on last year's Academic All-State team, including Garrett Demerjian (decathlon), Nami Paghavi (sprints), Johan Karlsson,Tyler Regan (throws), Andrew Scott (throws) from the men and Jennifer Konish (throws), Nicole Rietveld (distance), Bailey Schentrup (sprints, jumps), Jessica Serrano (distance) from the women.

Rietveld and Schentrup are members of this year's team.

Double champs on tennis court

The Ventura College tennis teams become double champs for the first time since 2007 Tuesday, when the teams both clinches Western State Conference titles.

The VC men (15-4, 9-0) topped Los Angeles Pierce, 5-4, to extend its WSC-title streak to seven seasons. Tyler Sperry and Nick Bezzubchenko earning the decisive set at No. 1 doubles.

The VC women (15-0, 8-0), ranked No. 1 in Southern California, clinched its first title in style, sweeping all five singles matches to knock off defending champion Santa Monica, 8-1. Julianna Bacelar, Jessica Worring, Sonia Landeros, Layne Gallimore and Carolyn Morris, VC's Top 5 singles players in order, all improved to 7-0 in WSC singles play.

All-Americans and record-setters highlight VC Hall class

A quintet of All-American and record-setting athletes are joined by its longest-serving men's basketball coach to form the Ventura College Athletic Hall of Fame's sixth class, unveiled earlier this month by the VC Athletic Association.

The class includes basketball coach George Hails and his guard Paul Harvey '56, as well as football guard Lex Byrd '56, runner George Gibb '66, swimmer Jeff Barrett '03 and softball shortstop Tisha Duran '04,

"This class is probably the most diverse class inducted into the hall," said VCAA president Ric Ruffinelli. "I'm just really excited. We keep reaching back and finding those people from the past that deserve to be honored."

The class will be inducted in a ceremony May 6 at Crowne Plaza Ventura Beach.

After enjoying legendary success in four years under Indiana native Elmer McCall, the Ventura College men's basketball team turned to an Illinois native in 1952.

Hails arrived to steady the ship, guiding the Pirates to nine straight winning seasons from 1951-52 to 1960-61, including five 20-win seasons, two Western State Conference titles and a pair of fourth-place finishes in the state tournament in 1955 and 1959.

Hails, who also coached golf, tennis and football at VC, stepped down as basketball coach after a heart attack in 1967. His 15-year tenure is the longest in school history. His 225 wins make him the program's second-winningest coach.

A year not surviving a second heart attack, Hails, 50, was posthumously inducted into the CCCMBCA Hall of Fame in 1970. He is also an inductee of the Centralia, Ill. Hall of Fame.

Hail's first star was guard Paul Harvey, who guided the Pirates to a 25-10 record, a WSC title and a state semifinal berth in 1954-55. Harvey earned team MVP, NJCAA All-Region 1 and honorable mention All-American honors as a sophomore in 1955-56, when the Pirates were 20-10.

A centerpiece of a golden era of midwest basketball history, Harvey is also an inductee of the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame. With McCall as his coach, Harvey led South Bend Central High to its first state championship in 1953, topping Milan High in the state semifinal a year before it earned "Hoosiers" immortality.

Ever-present guard Byrd was the foundation of coach Paul Gannatal's first two football teams.

Byrd started all 19 games during his two-year career, earning All-American honors in 1955. After VC, He played for Cal State Los Angeles (1957-58) and the Toronto Argonauts and coached at the University of Toronto.

Hard-charging half-miler Gibb left a book of records in his wake in both cross country and track.

Gibb set seven course records in 1965 in earning cross-country team MVP honors. He was also MVP of the track team in 1966, when he ran 1:53.44 in the 800 meters. The mark remains the school record and among the five fastest in state history.

Ferocious freestyler Barrett, a 14-time WSC champion, five-time state champion and three-time national champion, is one of the most decorated swimmers in VC history.

The Nordhoff High graduate was an All-American in 16 events over the two seasons. As a sophomore in 2003, when he earned WSC Athlete of the Year honors, he successfully defended his 2002 state title in the 200 freestyle and added state titles in the 100 free, 500 free and 800 free relay.

He still holds school records in the two events in which he earned national titles, the 200 freestyle (1:38.50) and 500 freestyle (4:31.26). After VC, he spent two years at Arizona State, competed in the U.S. Olympic trials and swam professionally in Europe.

Duran was the slugging shortstop for the 2004 WSC North champion VC softball team.

The Channel League MVP at Buena High, Duran took the next step at VC, hitting .509 with nine triples, four home runs and 53 RBIs to earn WSC North Player of the Year, first-team All-State and county Female College Athlete of the Year honors.

Duran moved onto UC Santa Barbara, where she was a first-team All-Big West Conference selection. She has returned to Buena High as head softball coach.

Ramjlak commits to Rice

Ventura College shooting guard Austin Ramljak has committed to Rice University.

As a sophomore, the Oak Park High product averaged 18.7 points per
game and led the state with 102 3-pointers, shooting 40.8 percent from
3-point land.

The first team All-WSC North selection splashed five 3s in the
Pirates' postseason upset at Los Angeles Southwest.

Rice (19-16) finished seventh in Conference USA this season.

VC women striving for heights of VC men's swimming

With seven straight seasons in the Top 3 at the state meet, including state championships in 2005 and 2010, competing for the ultimate honors has become an annual rite of spring for the Ventura College men's swimming team.

Although, this spring, it looks like it will have some company.

By winning the annual Cuesta Invitational last weekend, when it topped the teams that have won the past four state titles, the Ventura College women's swimming team also showed it can compete on the state level.

"We're in the right company," said coach Larry Baratte. "Our relays are very strong."

With a hard-working sophomores class joined by 2010 All-American Shyla Motley and a deep, talented freshman group that includes Jessica Ball (Oxnard High), Abigail Puczkowski (Westlake), Christina Robledo (Santa Clara), Alicia Romero (Pacifica) and Taylor Amstutz (Oaks Christian).

"It's come together very nicely," said Baratte. "It's as good of a core of freshmen that we've ever had. They trained hard in the fall. They're versatile. They've filled a lot of events and relays."

A native of Valencia, Venezuela like former Pirates Katherine and Cristina Fung, Rafael Aponte and Rafael Ingannamonte, freshman Gaby Romero broke a 22-year-old school record in the 100-yard butterfly in San Luis Obispo March 9, finishing second in 58.56 seconds.

It wasn't the only record-breaking swim of the weekend, as freshman Henry Chung set the school record in the 100 backstroke Saturday, winning in 50.48.

The performance was remarkable considering Chung, who also won the 50 freestyle in 20.72 seconds and 200 backstroke in 1:53.35, bettered the mark of last year's state champion (Steven Tennant) in midseason, outside in windy conditions, on his fifth swim of the day

"It was one of the best swims Ventura College has ever had," said Baratte.

Chances are there will be many more from Chung, a Hong Kong national who will be chasing state records as he strives to qualify for the Olympics this summer in London.

"He passes the eye test," said Baratte. "He's intimidating when he gets up on the blocks."
Chung and sophomore Eric Donahoo led a men's team that features eight sophomores from last year's state runner-up, including Tyler Kaslik, Spencer Lewis, Thomas Maires, Coleman Goode and Griffin Pool.

"When you put those two together with that solid core of sophomores," said Baratte, "the freshmen just need to move from high school to college quickly."

The VC men won the Mount San Antonio Invitational Feb. 25, beating defending state champion Orange Coast 657-579, and finished second to Santa Rosa last weekend at Cuesta, 816-539.

"Santa Rosa is very good," said Baratte. "They're ahead of us right now. We have a long way to go if we're going to get past them.

"It's going to be based on the freshmen stepping up and accepting their roles."

In winning Mt. SAC, the VC men dominated the relays, winning the 200 free (Chung, Dillon Cleavenger, Donahoo and Lewis) in 1:26.73, the 200 medley relay (Chung, Goode, Kaslik and Donahoo) in 1:37.76 and the 400 medley relay (Chung, Goode, Kaslik, Donahoo) in 3:33.84.

Tyler Kaslik won the 500 free (4:48.65) and 200 butterfly (1:56.24). Chung won the 50 free (20.83) and 100 butterfly (51.83).

For the women, freshmen Ball and Puczkowski were highlights at Mt. SAC. Ball won the 500 free (5:22.61), 200 free (1:59.70), mile (19:10.17) and anchored four winning relays. Puczkowski finished second in the 50 free (25.55), 100 free (55.46) and 200 free (2:01.74) and was part of three of the winning relays.

Just the two record-breaking swims themselves would have made it a memorable weekend at Cuesta.

"It's been a long, long time since we've had a school record broken in the middle of the season," said Baratte.

But the VC women also earned a valuable lesson by edging Orange Coast by one point, 550-549.

"We won the first event of the meet by .06 and that was the meet," said Baratte. "They're learning that every place from one to 16 crucial. That's a different kind of environment."

Women winning on the court

What's happening in the pool also seems to be happening on the tennis court.

The Ventura College women's tennis team has opened the season 11-0, including 4-0 in the Western State Conference, behind Julianna Bacelar, Jessica Worring (Santa Clara High), Sonia Landeros (Rio Mesa), Layne Gallimore (St. Bonaventure), who have opened 4-0 in WSC singles play.

Raiders on radar

The Moorpark College men's volleyball team (7-3) flashed its credentials Wednesday by knocking off No. 1-ranked Long Beach City in four games at Raider Pavilion.

"That is a very big win," said Moorpark coach Steve Burkhart. "It's the first time we've beaten that team since we started with the men."

Long Beach (8-1) had swept its previous six straight matches and had only dropped two games all season.

"They are a very aggressive hitting and serving team," said Burkhart. "We knew that if we could hang in there a little bit, maybe they'd start to doubt themselves."

After dropping the first game, Moorpark rebounded to sweep the final three.

"All of a sudden we started to believe," said Burkhart. "Our defense really played great."

Just two months after Oxnard College decided to suspend its basketball programs, a Condor led his team to the state championship.

Ed Madec, the Rio Mesa High and Oxnard College product, coached the Fresno City men's basketball team to the state title for the second time in five years.

The Rams beat Yuba 77-62 in the state final Sunday at Consumnes River in Sacramento.
Mount San Antonio beat Foothill, 68-58, in the women's final. Ventura College sophomore Rebecca Griffin, who scored a game-high 14 points in the Pirates' semifinal loss, was named to the all-tournament team.

Mircetic, LaFountain proclaim Pirates "ready to play"

After a 55-minute shootaround, the team's final on-court preparations ahead of tonight's state Final Four in Sacramento, both head coach Ned Mircetic and star forward Destinee LaFountain proclaimed the Ventura College women's basketball team "ready to play" Friday morning

"It went well," said Mircetic. "We got out of the hotel. We got some good shots up. We got in everything that we wanted and did it efficiently.

"We're ready to play."

Asked about the on-campus venue, the Consumnes River College Athletic Center, Mircetic replied that only the Pirates' home venue would be better.

"It's very nice, I love it," said Mircetic. "This is a great site."

The consensus among the players was positive, although sophomore Blayke Hudson mentioned that the balls seemed "really bouncy."

Sophomore point guard Rebecca Griffin pointed out that the venue will be the same for both teams.

"We could be playing outside and we'd still have to give it our all," said Griffin.

Breaking bread before tipping off

All four semifinals were asked to make a brief statement about their seasons at Thursday night's CCCWBCA banquet.

Stephanie Ramirez, the sophomore captain of the Ventura College women's basketball team, was chosen by her team.

The Rio Mesa High product was diplomatic in her speech in front of the three opposing teams.

"We're going to do our best and hope for the best," said Ramirez.

After the banquet, Ramirez was asked about being up on the spot.

"I had to keep it classy and respectful," said Ramirez.

With all four teams mingling in a small meeting room, there is often a bit of gamesmanship at the event.

"I know everyone is going to be nice, but we're in business mode," said sophomore Regan Mew. "All four teams were staring each other down."

"I felt a little tension in there," said sophomore Blayke Hudson. "It made me laugh."

As the CCCWBCA president, Consumnes River head coach Coral Sage served as moderator of the night's events. Before the night was through, she made sure to take a friendly dig at Ventura by making sure to mention that, as a player, she led her Sierra team over the Pirates in the 1999 state championship game.

The comment prompted laughter and boos from different corners of the room. It seemed to perk up the Ventura players.

"We want to win this year and back coach up," said Hudson.

Sophomore Destinee LaFountain didn't mind the atmosphere. The state co-Player of the Year was so focused on Friday's semifinal that she didn't realize her name was misspelled "LaFountaine" on her All-State certificate.

"All the talking is going to be done on the court," said LaFountain. "I just can't wait to play."

Advice from a new Hall of Famer

The California Community College Women's Basketball Coaches Association's banquet is held annually the night before the state championships to honor the participating teams.

It also honors the CCCWBCA Hall-of-Fame class. This year, the coaches inducted Los Angeles Valley players Ruth Aguilar Seja '89 and Sylvia Casteneda '90, as well as Cypress player Sara Works '95.

Aguilar Seja, the former L.A. Valley coach, now works in the neonatal intensive care unit at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles.

Thursday night, the 1989 state co-Player of the Year offered perhaps the best advice for the four teams on Final Four eve.

"Enjoy this," said Aguilar Seja on the dais, her young daughter at her side. "It's going to go one of the best times of your life."

The playoff fields have been paired down to the Great Eight and every game tonight has a trip to the state Final Four next weekend at Consumnes River College in Sacramento riding on it.

Buoyed by playoff performances by shooter Carlotta Kloppenburg, young point guard Rian Mew and reserve forward Candace Sakuda, among others, the Ventura College women's basketball team (31-1) have survived difficult games with Pasadena City and Cypress.

The Pirates welcome Foothill Conference champion San Bernardino Valley (28-3) to the VC Athletic Event Center tonight having won 22 straight games, including two tight, physical, dramatic games against the Wolverines Dec. 10 (53-45) and Dec. 30 (49-46). The two top defensive teams in the state should stage another similar showdown tonight.
