Winning streak pulls VC men's polo above water

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

It took five wins in a four-day span last week for te Ventura College men's water polo team to get its head back above water.

The Pirates fought their way back to .500 on the season by edging Santa Monica (13-10) in Western State Conference play before beating Santa Rosa (14-1), Ohlone (15-6), DeAnza (12-6), and Cabrillo (14-3) over the weekend at a tournament in San Luis Obispo.

"We got ourselves back to even this past weekend," Schmidt said.

The winning streak was snapped Wednesday, when Ventura (8-9) dropped its third one-goal decision of the season Wednesday, 10-9, against first-place Los Angeles Valley.

"We've had a good run," Schmidt said. "Valley has a good group of returners... There were a lot of positives.

"It's a young team and we're learning how to win some close games."

Ventura had lost its first seven matches against non-conference competition. Its has lost to seven of the Top 10 teams in the state, including No. 3 West Valley, No. 4 Long Beach City and No. 5 Riverside.

"We played a tough schedule to start," Schmidt said. "We don't have any easy games."

The team is founded upon sophomore returners Zach Graper (Royal), Ben Gossard (Buena) and Griffin Pool. Graper, an All-American selection as a freshman, has 37 goals, 15 assists and leads the team with 25 steals.

"He's had to adjust, so as a team we've had to adjust," Schmidt said of Graper. "A lot of our offense came out of five-meter fouls he drew last year. This year, teams are trying not to foul him.

"They're drawing up his defense trying to stop him, so we've put him in difference places in the pool."

Tim Allen (Ventura), who has scored a team-high 39 goals, and Joe Yamamoto (Rio Mesa) and lead a crop of freshman that also includes goalie Sean McGee.

"He's made up for some of our defensive deficiencies," Schmidt said.

Ventura gets back in the pool today in the Golden West tournament.

Moorpark volleyball streak snapped

In a meeting of the WSC North's two unbeatens, the Moorpark College women's volleyball team fell in four sets Wednesday night at Santa Barbara City College.

The loss snapped the Raiders' 16-match WSC North winning streak that dated back to a three-set loss to Santa Barbara in Nov. 12, 2010

"There were two Moorpark teams playing," Moorpark coach Steve Burkhart said.

"The team in the first game is the team we think we have. The next three games was the team I hope we don't see again."

Moorpark (9-7, 3-1) won its 49th straight set in WSC North play when it took the opener, 25-20, but first-place Santa Barbara (11-6, 5-0) responded 25-15, 25-21, 25-14.

"It wasn't a case where they did a lot," Burkhart said. "We just didn't execute on offense the way we needed to."

Gabby Luciani had seven kills and 13 digs. Amber Glaab had six kills and 18 digs. Taylor Susim had 10 blocks.

The loss was Moorpark's second straight, which followed a three-match winning streak.

"We've been on a pretty major rollercoaster all year," Burkhart said. "We've been consistently inconsistent. We've been working really hard to be just a little more consistent.

"We're still in the race. Hopefully, we'll get a little better."

Moorpark hosts cross-county rival Ventura (3-12, 2-2) tonight at Raider Pavilion. The Pirates are riding on a two-match WSC North winning streak, having come from 2-0 down to catch visiting Cuesta in five sets Friday behind Laura Acosta's 14 kills.

Pirates sweep honors

It's been a dream season thus far for the Ventura College football team, which is 7-0 for the second time in school history and rose one spot to No. 5 this week in JCFootball.com's national poll.

The Pirates' performance in Saturday's 44-37 win at College of the Canyons swept the SCFA Northern Conference Players of the Week honors.

Quarterback Ebahn Feathers won the offensive award for completing 25 of 38 passes for 300 yards. He threw four touchdowns, no interceptions and ran for another score.

Linebacker P.J. Gremaud, a St. Bonaventure High product, earned the defensive award by piling up 10 tackles, a forced fumble and two interceptions.

Returner Jordan Howard won the special teams award for returning four kickoffs for an average of nearly 34 yards per return, including a 93-yard return for a touchdown. The sophomore also had five tackles and an interception at cornerback.

Three Raiders named Academic All-State

Three Moorpark College women's cross country runners earned places on the 2011 CCCAA Academic All-State cross-country team, which was released this week.

Hayley Moore, Clarissa Wentworth and Emily Kelly were honored. Nominees must have completed a minimum of 24 units with a minimum 3.2 GPA.

All three are sophomores on this year's team. Moore is a Simi Valley High product. Wentworth is a Newbury Park High product. Kelly is from Avon, Conn.

Giles takes pause from pool

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

Mary Giles didn't want to let her team go.

But last month's heat wave, which saw temperatures rise to 105 degrees on the pool deck, made maternity leave a necessity.

"It was a little too exhausting," said the Ventura College women's water polo coach, who is nearly nine months pregnant with her second child.

Already 7 1/2 pounds, Makayla Giles is due to arrive next week.

Ventura College swimming coach Larry Baratte, who previously coached water polo at VC from 1988-99, has taken over Giles' whistle.

"He's got a great group of girls," Giles said. "And how nice is it to have a Hall of Fame coach available to take over?"

Considering the Pirates are the unprecedented four-time defending Western State Conference champions, Baratte's pinch-coaching role comes with some pressure.

"I don't worry that much about those types of things," Baratte said. "We'll be fine... Mary had a good foundation."

The sophomore quartet of Jenna Cutino, Anais Geysmonion, Emily Pinsky and Olivia Barry, plus freshmen like Ashley Runyon and Jerilyn Hollis and ahead of goalie Kayla Haas have the Pirates (10-5, 2-0) atop the WSC standings.

"They're all very complementary of each other," Baratte said. "They're really the foundation of the team, Emily is very solid and reliable... Anais is a good shot, Jenna really has been an outstanding defensive player for us. Olivia has always been unsung. She's our best conditioned swimmer and has to take the other teams' fastest swimmer or most talented athlete.

"All four of those girls have specific roles to fill."

Giles handed over a three-game winning streak on Sept. 24, which Baratte extended to seven games before VC, without Geysmonion, dropped a pair of games to finish third in its tournament Sunday.

Pinsky had three goals, Barry had five steals and Haas made nine saves in 10-9 loss to Chaffey. Barry leads the WSC in assists with 26.

"It's a nice group to work with," Baratte said. "We're learning. We're trying to get better every day. I think we'll put ourselves in a good position... We'll see what happens."

Giles, who is married to Thousand Oaks boys' water polo coach Mike Giles, attended the VC tournament and has already circled Nov. 2-3 on her calendar.

That's the weekend when Ventura hosts the WSC Championships.

"It's already scheduled," Giles said.

Midnight matchup

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

Both high school scrimmages combined for four dramatic overtimes and Pacifica High's Eric Davis produced a memorable performance in the slam dunk contest, but they weren't the primary attraction at Ventura College's Midnight Madness basketball event late Saturday

The matchup of Ventura College sophomores Zalmico Harmon and Joseph Soto, who will comprise one of the top backcourts in the state this winter, was the show.

"Just another day at practice," Soto said. "We both know each other's strengths and weaknesses, so it's always a battle."

Harmon's Black team beat Soto's Orange team in the scrimmage. But the third member of Ventura's Big 3, Najee Salaam, was a big advantage for the Black. Both guards looked significant improved over the offseason. Soto's 16 points, including four 3-pointers, led the night.

"He wasn't missing," Harmon said.

This week's polls

The first-place Ventura College football team (6-0) stayed steady this week at No. 2 in Southern California, No. 4 in the state and No. 6 in the JCFootball.com national poll.

Last week's impressive display rocketed the first-place Oxnard College men's soccer team (9-2-1) up to No. 3 in Southern California and No. 5 in the state. The Condors, who haven't conceded in its last nine hours of WSC play, held steady at No. 14 in the NSCAA national coaches' poll.

The Moorpark College women's cross country team, which finished second in Friday's WSC Preview meet, is ranked No. 3 in Southern California. Ventura is No. 12.

The Ventura College women's soccer team (7-5) remains unranked. But the Pirates knocked off Fresno, ranked No. 4 in Northern California and No. 8 in the state, 1-0 Saturday on Daisy Cardona's goal.

Cardona, an All-American selection as a freshman, leads the WSC in both goals (10) and points (27).

Ventura's five losses are to No. 1 Cerritos, No. 2 Santiago Canyon, No. 3 Cypress, No. 6 Los Angeles Pierce and No. 8 Canyons, who are a combined 41-2-4.

Moorpark looking for run at cross country title

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

It may be slight, but Traycie Kephart admits there's a chance.

The Glendale College women's cross-country team has dominated the Western State Conference for the past six years, winning three state championships in that span.

But, behind sophomore Megan McNalley and freshman Karla Vernola, the Moorpark College coach is hoping the Raiders can take a step towards dethroning the dynasty at today's WSC Preview meet at Kenneth Hahn Park in Los Angeles

"It's a pretty small chance," Kephart said. "If you look at the numbers. Everyone would have to run with 'A' game.

"But it's possible if everyone reaches their potential, but it's going to be a big team effort.
That's our goal here to eventually beat them."

Glendale edged Moorpark in the SoCal preview meet Sept. 15 in Costa Mesa and are currently ranked No. 2 and No. 3 in Southern California.

Health will be a big factor for the Raiders when the WSC Championships arrive Oct. 23 in Santa Barbara. Sophomore Rachel Naumann will rest an injury today.

Ventura, powered by sophomore Danika Galvan and freshman Sabrina Sewell, hopes to compete with Santa Barbara City for third.

"Moorpark and Glendale are going to battle," Ventura coach Tony Veney said. "Santa Barbara is really tough. They beat us by a little bit last week, so that's going to be the deal for us."

Oxnard qualified for SoCals last season as an at-large selection.

"This year, I believe our women are going to earn their way there," Oxnard coach Geno Sharp said. "If we can put together a race, collectively, I think we can finish fourth or fifth."

The Condors have added freshman Vannessa Martinez, a Rio Mesa High product, to last year's top runner, sophomore Cristal Gutierrez.

Hahn Park is a fast course that features a 600-meter climb to separate the teams.

"It looks like it will be good weather and it's a challenging course, so it'll be an interesting meet," Sharp said. "It'll be competitive."

Double-digit rout for Condors

The Oxnard College men's soccer team opened up a four-point lead atop the WSC standings with a 10-0 rout of visiting Glendale Tuesday afternoon.

"We've been threatening to have a blowout game for a while," Oxnard coach Ross Greaney said. "Our depth really hurt Glendale. As we subbed, we got stronger, not weaker.

"We have a lot of guys who are competing for playing time... The people who came off the bench tried even harder than the starters."

Rene Magana had a hat trick, Max Madrigal scored twice and Travis Bowen, Tommy Cruz, Roque Magana and Cory Vilchis also scored. Bowen added three assists.

"It's only one game, "Greaney said. "I hope we didn't score all our goals in one game."

Oxnard (7-2-1, 5-0-1), ranked No. 14 in the national coaches' poll, hosts Hancock Friday before completing the first half of WSC Tuesday at cross-county rival Moorpark.

Raiders breaking gridlock

After an odd September that saw it draw six of nine matches, the Moorpark College men's soccer team (1-3-6) earned its first win of the season Tuesday.

The Raiders scored twice in the final five minutes Tuesday to knock off second-place Los Angeles Mission, 4-3.

"It's such a personal game because a lot of my guys come from that area," Roche said. "You'd call it 'frantic' at that time. There was a cup-tie feeling about the thing. There had to be a winner."

Marvin Cartagenas' second goal gave the Raiders a late 3-2 lead. After Mission equalized, A.J. Felton followed with a solo goal in stoppage time.

"Last year, we would have lost those games," Moorpark coach Sean Roche said of the flurry of draws. "This year, we have two above-average goalkeepers. They have kept us in games.

Moorpark visits Santa Barbara City tonight before hosting cross-county rival Oxnard Tuesday.

Condors contenders?

Is the Oxnard College women's soccer team the biggest threat to the defending champion Ventura women in the WSC North race?

Megan Williams scored as Oxnard (4-3-4) opened WSC North with a 1-1 tie at Santa Barbara City, ranked No. 14 in this week's national coaches poll, Tuesday night.

Asked if the result showed the rest of the division that the Condors will be in the title race, Oxnard coach Bill Propster responded, "It was a statement to ourselves."

Oxnard's improvement can be, in part, attributed to improvement at the back. It has conceded just 12 goals in 11 matches.

The Condors had been outscored 47-6 in its 12-game losing streak to Santa Barbara, which dated back to a scoreless draw in Nov. 2005.

Moorpark College punter Alex Nelson earned SCFA Northern Conference Special Teams Player of the Week honors this week.

The Moorpark High product averaged 47 yards for six punts in Saturday's 41-9 loss to Ventura, including a 62-yarder and three punts inside the 20-yard line.

Ventura cornerback Drek Reid, who tied a school record with three interceptions, surprisingly lost out to Bakersfield safety Chris Hannible for the defensive award.
