Our own Republican Daddy Warbucks - uber right-wing Tony Strickland, running for the 19th State Senate seat in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties against moderate Democrat Hannah-Beth Jackson, has reportedly refused to debate her in a Sept. 24 forum sponsored by none other than the Ventura County Star and the local Chapter of the California Association of Political Centrists.
Jackson, on the other hand, had no trouble agreeing to this debate or a question-and-answer forum with Strickland last spring sponsored by the Camarillo Chamber of Commerce. Jackson performed quite well there in "Strickland Country."
The forum provided by the Star will likely be televised and would have given all voters a chance to see the two candidates in action. It's a shame they aren't being given this opportunity.
I must conclude he doesn't want to answer questions local voters want to put to him.
Since he's basing his entire campaign on his new company, GreenWave Energy Solutions, and not his actual record in the Assembly before he was termed out, I'd like voters to know more about it. Here's a link to Star Reporter Timm Herdt's article on the company. GreenWave has no paid employees, no technology, no business and its requests to study a wave energy project off the coast were sent back by a federal agency as deficient.
But his voting record on environmental issues and alternative energy was among the very worst, getting a 1.7 percent rating from the California League of Conservation Voters.
OK, so maybe he doesn't want to talk about that.
Maybe he's also afraid of questions about the $50,000 donation from Altria, parent company of Philip Morris, made to the Ventura County Republican Central Committee on his behalf. Here's Herdt's story on that. Apparently he has an excellent pro-tobacco industry record as Assembly member, voting against two bills which would make it harder for minors to buy cigarettes. He might also not want to talk about the almost $85,000 he's taken directly from tobacco companies.
Those are just a few questions he wants to duck. So how do we put the truth screws to Strickland if he is afraid to debate Jackson? Tell it like it is on blogs like this. And as Shakespeare wrote in the "The Merchant of Venice" - "truth will out."

Phony Tony is busy every morning standing on street corners waving signs at passing cars with his gumba Jose Angeles. Voters can really tell what the Phony stands for when passing him on a street corner. The Phony thinks it is OK for Jose to knock down women, children and senior citizens at political events. The Phony thinks it is great to watch Jose scream "taxin Jackson" at fire trucks full of children and fire fighters. By the end of this year, he will be in either the bread line or Wasco. You can take that to the bank.
Keep up the good work Ms. Conly.
CAP-872 keeps repeating himself/herself over and over again. It's getting so old.
Joel is a devoted and passionate campaigner who is not afraid to call a spade a spade when it comes to Jackson's record on taxation. Jackson could use someone with the kind of passion and courage of conviction in her faltering campaign as Joel Angeles. Who knows, it could spark some interest, which is extremely lacking at the moment. Ladies and gentleman, the bottom line is we cannot afford another tax and spend liberal in the State Legislature.
They've shown us exactly what they are unable to do very recently, in fact. They can't even adopt a budget. They've just recently come to agreement with the Governor on a spending plan that is more than 3 months past the constitutional deadline for passing a budget. It's the same old delays, stonewalling, and foot-dragging year after year.
Meanwhile, the cities, counties, school districts, non-profits, health care and social service providers, and thousands of state vendors and contractors are deprived of the necessary funds to continue operating while these pathetic excuses for elected leaders attend their out of state party conventions.
I think we need another tea party in Sacramento. Apparently, the one we had in 2003 didn't quite do the trick.
Political Watch Central Coast has an anti Tony Strickland bumper sticker and yard sign available for down load. Down load the file and take it Kinkos to print, then put it in your yard and bring one to thenext rally you attend. Bumper Sticker and Yard Sign
I put the blame for the budget debacle squarely on the shoulders of the recalcitrant Republicans. Everybody needed to give a little here. They wouldn't. All current polling shows California favored the Democrats' plan more.
I was personally in favor of Elizabeth Hill's first alternative budget, but as usual she was pretty much ignored by both parties.
Having another rigid ideologue in the State Senate like Tony Strickland is the worst possible thing that could happen to California right now.
We need somebody like Hannah-Beth Jackson who has shown she can work with both parties and has the support of Republicans and Independents, too:

Ah shucks Mongo-Gibson. I so sorry that I am not stimulating to you. I am indeed fixated on Jose Angeles and Phony Tony. Working to defeat Phony Tony and put Jose in jail have become my full time activity. The Phony is going down and with his demise will go Osborn and you, Mongo-Gibson. Jose going to the slammer will be frosting on the proverbial cake.
CAP-872,
Sorry, but you're sounding a little dangerously obsessive here. You don't have a license to carry a firearm by any chance, do you?
Come on Mongo-Gibson. I leave guns up to the police and the key to the slammer up to the prosecutors. I'm just a campaign volunteer who has an opinion to share. You get your kicks by being a Phony Tony groupie with Osborn and cohorts and I get mine by watching the idiot and his gumba Jose make mistakes and head for the slammer.
CAP-872,
Sorry to break the news to you, but no one is going to the slammer. This whole issue with the confrontation in Westlake has been dealt with already. Let it go. It will be good for your blood pressure.
This is all just wishful thinking on the part of someone who's obviously living in a dream world, with what appears to be some major John Hinkley-like obsessions.
How wrong you are Mongo-Gibson. Stay tuned!
I'll stay tuned but I don't hear anything coming over the airwaves, except maybe some trumped-up, bogus charges that no one in the Sheriff's Department or D.A.'s Office is taking seriously. You can take that one to the bank too.
I have heard criminal charges have been recommended by the sheriff's department and filed. I also heard the DA was sitting on the charges but I find that hard to believe. This is all heresay but if true, not good.
But given Joel Angeles's behavior - he should have been fired on the spot. Now he is a liability to both Audra and Tony.
The D.A.'s sitting on them because he doesn't feel there is sufficient evidence to go to trial. The witnesses are unreliable on both sides because they've made statements that conflict with other eyewitness accounts of what happened that night.
My prediction is that it won't go to trial. If it does, I'd be very surprised.
Mongo-Gibson, you profess expertise in nearly every subject, but you display stupidity in nearly all your posts. You can't figure out why Totten recused himself? Try because he has a relationship with the accused, because he has a close relationship with the Jose's two employers and because he can be called as a witness to the alleged crime. How about reading the lengthy complaint that was submitted by the Sheriff to the D.A.? How about the medical records of the victims? How about the surgery that was required to repair one of the victim's injuries? How about the thirteen witnesses who were interviewed, the photographs and the video? Yes, Mongo-Gibson, you have all the facts. In your own mind you are an expert. In reality, you are one of Ventura's biggest nut jobs.
CAP-084,
Wow, it sounds like you've already got the guy convicted. I thought you liberals believed in the concept of innocent until proven guilty. If this was an Al-Quaeda terrorist who was accused of some heinous crime, you guys would be falling all over each other to defend his right to a fair trial. But, when it happens to be someone you disagree with politically, well, let's hang him from the highest tree.
Your hypocrisy knows no end on this blog. Bubba has done a good job of pointing it out in many instances and your only response is: "Grab your traps. It's a gopher alert." How intellectually inspiring is that?
CAP - did Totten recuse himself? Is there anyway the criminal complaint can be posted?
The Sheriff forwarded its investigation of the alleged crimes to the District Attorney with a request that criminal charges be filed against Jose Angeles, Chief-of-Staff to Audra Strickland. Mr. Angeles was represented by an attorney during the investigation. The Case No. is 0816326. This report contained interviews with more than one dozen witnesses as well as medical records of the victim(s). The investigation took three months to complete.
The District Attorney received the complaint from the Sheriff on September 9. The complaint was assigned a Case No. of 2008037706. After more than two weeks, the District Attorney apparently determined that he would recuse himself from the Case and forward it to the State Attorney General. It is my understanding that the recusal letter was prepared three days ago and forwarded to the County Counsel's Office.
Here is another case Totten will need to recuse himself from involving Republican criminal activity. Voter Fraud
