Harry S Truman

Brian Dennert here. When I published the accidental link between the local Republican website and a pornography website I said I would reveal information about the local Democratic website next.

Well here goes.

Did you know Harry Truman's middle name? It is S, and nothing more. S doesn't stand for anything, it is not an intial, it is his name. It was a compromise so that his parents wouldn't offend either grandfather. What an ideal politician, even his name is a compromise.

But if you go to venturacountydemocrats.com you wouldn't know this! Right there in the middle of the page it says Harry S. Truman ! Give the man the respect he deserves guys and drop the . now!

I recently read a copy of the January newsletter from the Santa Clara River Valley, Republican Women Federated.

This group of Republicans claims to be disenfranchised because all of California's electoral votes were cast for John Kerry, and warn of "Hillary in the wings." They rage against The Star, encouraging their members to "focus on busting their chops" and refer to people who have questioned the validity of gang injunctions in Oxnard, as "the whacko anti-injunction people."

I read with interest their lament that the percentage of Latino and African-American votes cast for President Bush was "dismal," and they will be encouraging membership in their organization, "especially new minority members." When I read their "dates to remember" section, it struck me as very ironic.

Prominently listed was the inauguration, the schedule for viewing Nancy Reagan's wardrobe at the library, and the dedication of her husband's commemorative stamp. But there was absolutely no mention made of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Jan. 17 national holiday.

Surely, Dr. King's pioneering work in the civil rights movement should have rated a mention in the newsletter. He devoted his life to fighting for civil rights, especially for the minority citizens of this country, which this group claims to covet as voters and members.

How does calling people "whackos," claiming to be disenfranchised by justly cast electoral votes, hand-wringing about Hillary Clinton and lining up to view Nancy's closet, serve to engage people in the political process?

Ventura County Democrats recognized Dr. King's legacy Jan. 17. They are also contributing to the national memorial being constructed in his honor. Doing so is productive, positive and reflects the true moral and family values of our community.
