Hey Y'all,
I received the following letter in the mail:
Dear Neighbors,
A matter of great importance which will effect the future of Simi Valley Demands that you attend a city council meeting on April 4th 2005 at 6:30PM at the Simi Valley City Hall.
The city of Simi Valley and YOUR elected officials are preparing to permit the deterioration of our pristine entrance to our community, the paving of our open spaces, the destruction of our natural habitat and increases in traffic congestion and pollution. These are the consequences if the city approves the planned construction on the west side of Kuehner Drive at the 118 freeway. This project although modified to appease local concerns is still not appropriate for this location. The council who gave us the McDonalds at Yosemite and recently approved another fast food franchise at the entrance to our new mall at First Street and the 118 freeway now wants to take one of the last remaining pristine parcels and destroy this habitat and visual entrance to our community.
Your voice needs to be heard on this issue.
Save the character of your home and community
Please call and join our cause to protect the integrity of our community and our quality of life. By attending this meeting, you will send a strong signal to Mayor Miller and the city council that you oppose urban sprawl in our community and its devastating effects. The city council repeatedly states that citizen participation and developer outreach to surrounding neighbors and neighborhoods is critical to project approval in this community, our group, Citizens for Smart Growth has been at each and every hearing and we have yet to hear from the developer. We contacted the property owners and they just hung up on us -- so much for citizen participation -- join us to see if your city council walks the walk and talks the talk on April 4th.
I can be reached at 805-583-3064 and we welcome your participation in our quest to tell our city leaders that it's not business as usual. Call city hall at 805-583-6701 and register your vocal opposition to Mayor Miller regarding this urban sprawl invasion located at the 118 freeway and Kuehner. Please call me to become actively involved.
Your concerned neighbor

Well, it isn't the Federalist Papers version 2.0 but I think Carol has some fighting spirit. Any readers have some background information about this property or the issue at hand?
My first instinct tells me we should buy it and donate it to the adjoining park land, but hey, I am not in the market for a freeway close condo at the moment.
Also, do you agree The Star should be reporting on political letters like this that we get in the mail?
Brian Dennert
PS- The flyer had flip-flops all over it labeled with the council members names. I guess if it worked on John Kerry it can work in Simi Valley.

Agree for 100%
Everytime I see the phrase " quality of life " I cringe because a call for crushing someones right to use their property always follows. The right thing to do when someone wants to stop a development is to raise the money to buy the property and then do with it what you will. The shrill cries for the use of government force in order to impose ones will on another is obscene.
I sometimes wonder if we will ever learn that a truly civilized society is built on the principles of individual rights and that the end does not always justify the means.
