Local community leaders who have answered the call.

I have never served in our nation's Armed Forces. But I have much respect for those that do. Many of my friends and family have served in the most recent major military operations. From Afghanistan to Iraq to Gitmo I have heard amazing stories.

Right now when we have focused on so much who haven't served ( Donald Rumsfeld, Dick Cheney, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush*, and others) I think ti would be nice to think about those who have served.

So, with that being said, I'd like to have this thread be an official record of who amongst our local leaders have answered the call. As we find out more, please list if they haven't or if they have, how.

I reserve the right to delete any post that attacks a local community member for not serving. This thread is to thank the people that have risked it all for us.

Let's get started...

FIVE DEFERMENTS:

Check this out...

1st deferment: Cheney enrolled in Casper Community College in January 1963 -- he turned 22 that month -- and sought his first student deferment on March 20.

2nd deferment: (student), after transferring to the University of Wyoming on July 23, 1963.

3rd deferment:(student)on Oct. 14, 1964.

4th deferment: attended graduate school at the University of Wyoming on Nov. 1, 1965.

5th deferment: On Oct. 6, 1965, the Selective Service lifted its ban against drafting married men who had no children. Nine months and two days later, Cheney had his first daughter. Cheney applied for 3-A status, the ''hardship''exemption, which excluded men with children or dependent parents. It was granted.

Arleigh,

I found this link about you.

Give us some details. Name, rank, and time in the Marines etc.

Brian,
I was in the Marine Corp Reserve from Jan. 10th, 1984 until Jan. 10th, 1990. I was an anti-tank assault man, 0351, firing the "Dragon", a wire guided missile. I was stationed in Port Hueneme and did my basic training at MCRD San Diego and Weapons School at Pendleton and Camp L. North Carolina. I was very proud to serve my country and would do it again if asked.

Bob Handy, regional director of the Democratic Party for Santa Barbara, Ventura and San Luis Oblispo counties, served in the US Navy until 1972 when he retired after a 20 year career.

Kevin Ready, Democratic congressional candidate in 1994, served in the US Navy as a line officer in the Persian Gulf and as a JAGC officer in the US Army.

Michael Case, Democratic congressional candidate in 2000, served in the US Air Force as a JAGC officer during the 1970's.

Bob Gallaway, former Ventura County Democratic Party Chair, served in the US Army (infantry and JAGC officer) from 1973 through 1981 and in the Army Reserves from 1981 until 2000.

Camarillo City Councilman (and Democrat) Don Waunch is retired US Marine.

RLG-

I remember that about Michael Case. By the way, do I know you? RLG is vague, but sounds familiar.

I found on Judy Mikel's campaign website the following:

husband Lt. Col. John "Mike" Mikels, USAF retired

I didn't see anything about her serving but it appears her husband did.

Brian

Hi Brian:

Just wanted to wish all those that served a special thanks on this special thanksgiving.

Also, I hope you and your family have a wonderful thanksgiving.

Scott

Brian,

Mayor Paul Miller of Simi Valley served for 8 years in the Naval Reserve, and let's not forget his 32 years in Law Enforcement with the LA County Sheriff's Department, as well as SVPD.

Tim Keaney

Tim,

Thanks for the input. I didn't know that about our mayor.

Do you know about any other local leaders? If you do, let me know one way or another. Even if they didn't serve, that way we can cross them off the unknown list.

I didn't serve, did you?

Thanks for your time.

Brian
