PRESS RELEASE
For Immediate release:

37th Assembly District Candidate meets with Karen Hughes-

On January 25th Newbury Park resident Ferial Masry attended a meeting with Karen Hughes, U.S. Undersecretary of State for Public Diplomacy, in Washington, DC. Hughes, a trusted advisor to President Bush, was appointed to her current position in order to improve America’s image abroad.

Hughes invited the members of the United States Institute of Peace Advisory Committee on U.S.- Muslim World Relations to meet with her monthly at the State Department. Masry recently accepted an invitation to become a member of the Institute of Peace Advisory Committee, which was formed in 2004 to explore the potential contribution of American Muslims in bridging the U.S-Muslim divide.

According to Masry, Hughes said that she is interested in listening and learning about the Middle East because of the role the United States is playing there. It has become urgent for American Muslims to serve as a bridge to understanding between the two peoples.

Masry is an American Government and U.S. History teacher at Cleveland High School in Reseda. She was the Democratic candidate for the 37th Assembly District in 2004.

One of Ferial’s most important goals is to “build bridges” within the community. Ferial’s commitment to represent ALL the citizens in the 37th A.D. is one of her best qualities. Through Mrs. Masry’s work with Ms. Hughes, we see how important it is to reach across the aisle to “the other side” in order to achieve some kind of progress toward peace.
Since I first met her, Ferial Masry has always stressed the fact that we must lead by example and extend our ideas, advice, and counsel to others, even if they do not see eye to eye with us. I hope Ferial’s example shows other politicians (no matter what party they represent) that the first step toward a better California, and better America, is learning that those with different views can work together to get things done. It is only through communication between all parties involved (be it political, religious or otherwise) that we can truly achieve any kind of progress toward a better, brighter future.
