Jim Alger coming to Simi Valley

Jim Alger a candidate for state assembly 38th district will be speaking to local citizens. He has a nice website up, but will the web be a major tool in his campaign? If so, shouldn't his supporters start talking about him on blogs like this?

Ferial Masry has an aggressive web campaign. Thanks for the link Ferial Masry!

One of his opponents is a city council member from Santa Clarita ( How come no candidate from Simi Valley is running, yet again?) Cameron Smyth. Cameron is so out of touch with Simi Valley that on his endorsements list he spells Dean Kunicki ( County Board of Education) in a creative way. Am I just being tough on him because I want someone from Simi Valley to run? Maybe. He also has the support of Chris Valenzano of the county board, even though near as I can tell their districts don't overlap.

But Cameron Smyth does have the support of both Glen Becerra and Barbra Williamson. I wonder how he earned their support so early in the process? He is the odds on favorite to win thus far.

Word for word from Jim Alger's press release.

Barbra,

What sold you on Smyth? Have you known him for a long time?

When he asked for your endorsement was it by phone call or did he come out and meet city leaders?

Hi Brian,
He met with me for about an hour and we discussed his ideas, and he seems pretty grounded, and not full of himself, which I liked. BUT let me ask a questions. If a person from Simi Valley were to run against Smyth, do you think the voters from Simi Valley would out vote the candiate from Santa Clarita? I don't know what the number of registered voters are in SC. Do they have more than Simi Valley?
Barbra
P.S. Brian, I sent you an e-mail and have not heard back, what's up with that?

Barbra,

I believe Simi Valley leaders can do it. I am fine being represented by someone from the Valley, but it seems like Simi Valley never even considers running a candidate.

I assume you are talking about the e-mail with the press release. Check back later and you will see it posted.

Smyth is running a tough on immigration campaign. Do you think that is the most important issue the assembly needs to deal with?

Smythe is running an anti-immigrant, anti-gay, anti-choice campaign. Those are three constituencies that won't vote for him in November.

This Alger guy has been around in this campaign for a while and I just saw my first Alger bumper sticker in Simi Valley this morning. I also saw what looked like a volunteer van this past weekend so this guy is definitely campaigning.

Nice to see someone actually coming to Simi Valley. I can't make it tonight but I would love to here him and see what he has to say.

As for Smythe, anyone who thinks he isn't arrogant, or belongs in the State Assembly with his right wing agenda of ending abortion rights in California or preventing gay marriage should be ashamed of themselves.

Smythe is on his way to Congress as fast as he can get there. The Assembly is just a pit stop.

"Cameron is the odds on favorite"??? How is that? Although the campaign isn't saying it my sources have a Democrat leading in the polls right now. Smyth is a virtual unknown outside of Santa Clarita.

If someone is strong enough to put on a real campaign, and we throw a few bucks their way we might just pick up the 38th.

What are the numbers in the district? What is the breakdown by percentage? Is it even close? Is being pro-abortion and pro-illegal immigration a good selling point for SIMI VALLEY? Do you really think the right to choose is on the line? Cameron will win because the people of this area live in BUSH COUNTRY!If you don't like that move to Moorpark!

The right to choose is on the line and anyone who doesn't think so is missing the boat as they did in 2004.

Smyth is to the right of this district and after hearing Alger the other night I think Smyth might have a problem.

How can the state assembly outlaw abortion? If they can, I am voting in this election. Silly me, I thought it would take the U.S. Supereme court to do something!

What is that you say? You actually mean abortion will have more reasonable restrictions?

Do you really think running aroud Simi Valley telling people that you are pro-choice is going to shake up the race? How about something that appeals directly to the problems more people in Simi Valley face?

The US Supreme Court is being stacked with Right-Wing anti abortion advocates. To say the right to choose is on the line is fair because if the Supreme Court overturns Roe v Wade, as many think they will, it will happen in the next year or two.

We don't want an anti-choice nut like Smyth in the State Assembly when that happens.

Here is an idea for all you anti-choice right wingnuts, how about you stay out of my body and mind your own damn business?

Do you really get off trying to feel morally superior over women by forcing your personal morality on them?

I heard Alger speak and he talked about much more than abortion. He spoke about local control over land use, urban landfills, clean money, and after school day care.

If none of those topics resonated with you and all you latched onto was abortion, then your so far to the right you will never vote for a Democrat anyway.

Jackie you proved my point. I said it would take Supreme Court action. You agree. In California is Smyth is elected and the US Supreme Court allows states to restrict abortion, do you think Smyth will be the swing vote?

My larger point stands though. If your number one issue coming into Simi Valley is being pro-choice, it is going to be a tough battle to say the least.

Stay on message witht he clean money and land use issues. That sounds way more interesting in Simi Valley.

The polls say Smyth is unknown outside Santa Clarita? I don't know the district well enough, bit isn't Santa Clarita a big bulk of the district? And is there anyone running with bigger name ID? Does Jim Alger have bigger name ID?

What separates Alger from the other Democrats?

Easy, that one... he's running for the Assembly seat instead of the County Committee seats.

Santa Clarita is roughly half the district. FWIW, Smyth isn't even that well known *in* Santa Clarita.

For those who don't thin Jim Alger is right about the Right Wing attempting to outlaw a womans right to choose... South Dakota has voted to ban ALL abortion, including in the event of incest and rape.

This issue is very much on the table this year thanks to the Right Wingers who insist on cramming their version of morality down our throats.

GO JIM GO!
