Here is an update from The Mike Shire's Star about the Dantona/Foy contest.
Another article quoting Mike Shires attacking Dantona's chances. Does the guy even live here? Why does The Star only call on private schools for quotes? Seems obvious that they tend to be more conservative.
Mike Shires said Dantona had no chance. Whatever the final outcome, he is wrong with how close the campaign really came.
At this rate expect Mike Shires quotes for years saying Democrats have no chance from dog catcher to park board.
Does he work for a conservative think tank?
A professor??? How come he doesnt know that late ABs trend moderate? What if the majority of those ABs WAITED till after the debate before they were cast...wouldn't that suggest they were NOT cast along party lines? Also, simple arithmetic would suggest that there needs to be 4000 ballots, trending as conservative as the early mail-ins did, for Mr Foy to overturn the outcome (I still think there's only about 1200 to be counted and they'd need to trend 2-1 for Mr Foy). If these outstanding ballots trend moderate (or even 3-2), then there won't be enough to change the reults.
There are 5,000 to 15,000 ballots left to be counted in the 4th District alone. Who knows where the 1,200 number came from, but we all know gs just throws information out there without any substantiating backup whatsoever. It's a disservice to healthy public debate, but the odds are great that gs will never change.
gs and I were referencing an LA TImes article today - which stated there were 1K absentee ballots.
I have just heard that the LA Times is wrong and that there are 15K ballots for District 4!

I stand corrected, and apologize to GS for making an assumption. I wondered where that number came from. How the heck could the elections chief make such different statements to different newspapers?
And I agree with y'all, that the delay must be driving them nuts. This whole campaign has been filled with peaks and valleys, including from 8 p.m. Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. He's up, he's down, he's up again. It's Rocky material.
ok first to say that "the star" is conservative is soooooooooooooooooooooo wrong. they are more left then are soon to be new speaker. you just have to look at who they interview. example: they did an article a little while back regarding yard signs and money being spent on local campaigns. they had 4 quotes from dems and not one from a rep. one of whom was jim dantona. then guess who they endorsed and called to win. Anyone who reads the star day to day knows this.

The Star endorsed Elton Gallegly again. I guess he is a big time liberal.
Sometimes I think the Star endorses a token conservative so that they don't get accused of liberal bias. If you go over the ballot recommendations by the Star it typically matches the recommendations of the DNC about 80% of the time. But I will give the Star credit that it does get stories right now and then and it isn't totally left-wing like the NY Times. It really comes down to the individual reporter and their biases. But the editorial staff is pretty liberal for sure. However I really don't care about stuff like that since I read it mostly to stay up on local issues and events.
Republicans say is liberal for the same reason athletes bother a ref. They are trying to make the ref feel guilty and think that will make them rule in their favor.
The Star is a moderate paper and has proven it by endorsing moderates over and over.
So, what is the senior congressman Elton Gallegly going to do in Washington after the Republican right wing debacle this past November 7?
Really I do not understand how the Ventura Star can endorse somebody that has been in Congress for 20 years, and in my opinion, doing a very mediocre job, paid by the taxpayers of this county. To quote a recent movie, politicians are like diapers, they should be changed often and for the same reason! Elton?....
I wish they wouldn't call on partisan professors like Gooch that work for local Republicans. Might as well call Howard Dean and ask for a report on all the things Republicans have done right.
Has anyone ever met Mike Shires? It would seem the most politically connected blog in VC would have at least one person that has met him.
What type of event was it at?

Why won't The Star quote someone from a CSO or UC?
They might be more liberal, but nothing is as lame as quoting Herb Gooch, local Republican activist/professor @ CLU on the chances of anything with the word Democrat in it.

Looks like Shires is not only a Republican party operative but is plugged into the conservative movement in Simi Valley.
Asking Shires about Dantona is about as fair as asking The Sierra Club about Peter Foy.
Shires isn't a non-partisan observer of the news. He is trying to shape the news.
It is obvious that one part of the Foy campaign sought to make it look impossilble for Dantona to win. Shires was a part of that effort. I hope Foy invited Shires to the election night party for helping him.
Shires was quoted as saying:
Foy...would have to be faced with a major scandal to lose the 4th District race...
No matter what happens the race was close. Does that mean Shires believes there was a scandal? What does he know? What was the scandal?
Shires tried his best to read the talking points that Peter Foy was the 800 pund gorilla. Now we know it is really because he supported Peter Foy, not because he was an objective professor.
Hopefully The Star will find a new professor who isn't nearly as partisan and involved in local campaigns.
I agree that Barbara Boxer is liberal but according to Shires:
“Senator Boxer is seen as an extremist and a liberal by even median voters in the state,” said Dr. Michael Shires, professor in the School of Public Policy.
Now, what type of professor would seek to reinforce the perception that Boxer is an extremist? Our local Republican party activist Michael Shires.

Where are you guys coming up with Shires being a Republican activist? I know Gooch was on the Republican Central Committee but how do you know Shires is involved with the Republican Party? If this is true, it is nice that "centrist" Scott Harris gives them so much air time on his show. How can Harris call himself a centrist when he surround himself with Republicans? And how can the paper consider it is giving balanced reporting if it is only talking to Republicans? So please, can you confirm that Shires is a Republican activist?
Here is the proof:
1. He teaches at Ken Starr's Pepperdine ( a private Christian college).
2. He has never been quoted in a local paper giving a Democrat a chance.
3. He is always quoted saying the Republican will win without a doubt.
4. He hangs with Scott Harris the "centrist" and Herb Gooch.
5. He attends a conservative leaning church.
6. The Foy/Dantona race is basically tied, yet he thinks only a major scandal could cause Foy to lose.
7. The paper has always quoted conservative professors from private colleges before any truly non-partisan analysts. Herb Gooch has been replaced by Michael Shires. Meet the new boss...
Add to the above he repeats GOP talking points. Foy was projecting confidence and Shires went on the offensive to get this line of attack into print.
He also called Barbara Boxer who has defeated Republican after Republican an "extremist". I wonder if he uses words like that to desribe his allies?

If the Red Star would like to balance out the liberal bias with a quote or two from Republican sympathizers what is wrong with that? Dr. Shires has a long record of providing government with advice. The winner of the county supervisor's race should consider hiring him.
